I started a post in the "Health" forum when my son lost his glider mother. My primary concern then was trying to figure out what might have happened to her AND if there were concerns for the Joeys she was raising. Well, the conversation has evolved to be almost totally about the care and feeding of the Joeys, so I am starting this thread to continue that discussion in the right forum. Here is the original thread: Death of a mother glider. You can read the background there. Here is my final post over there that probably should have been here. For reference, they are approx 5-6 weeks OOP and seem quite healthy and active.
Quote:
We've removed the "yesterdays news" for now so that we can see what shape the stool is in. It may or may not go back in… I also just mixed my first batch of BML. I held out the egg shell and wheat germ till I finished and got out a baby food jar full to give the joeys in the next few days. Then I added the eggs shell and meal before blending well for the adults (continued till I couldn't see any shell bits). Just fed the adults about 2 oz over a half dozen seedless grapes (cut in half) and a baby sweet carrot cut into slices with some mango added for good measure. When I rousted them out to get the babies, I encouraged them to check out the cup where they ate a little, then went back to bed. The babies on the other hand were a bit of a pain. One squirmed around wanting to go exploring till I finally got him to settled down in my palm. He finally did take some from a syringe sorta seeping onto my palm, he wouldn't touch a puddle at all. The second (more skittish and vocal) never would take any from me, but persisted in wanting to explore. After a bit I put them in a plastic shoe box together along with a yogurt lid with about a tsp of the baby formula. Set off in a quiet place I'm hoping they decide to sample it at least. They seem to be defecating fine on their own, so I have not tried the q-tip method. Anything else I should do or watch for? Hmm, now that the primary discussion is on the care and feeding of the joeys, maybe I should start a new thread in the appropriate forum?

In the evening... place the babies back in with the Daddy and Auntie. Babies will be hungry later and will follow them to the food dishes during the night time and wee hours of the morning.
To feed... put 2 tablespoons for the adults and an added tablespoonful for the babies for now.... of frozen BML or one ice cube if mix was poured into an ice tray and frozen. No need to thaw... as it only takes five min to do so inside a dish. If all the mix is gone in the morning then add another tablespoon of mix or 1/2 ice cube of mix to the dish that evening.
Babies do need to be supplemented every six hours during the daytime because they are not capable of eating enough at night time on their own. Once weaned.... no daytime feedings.
Babies are simi independent at 5 to 6 weeks oop. so do not like being restrained. To help with this problem... trim the nails first... to prevent from being scratched. From there, wrap him in a piece of fleese to help restrain the baby. Then try to feed. Mix a little pre mixed puppy milk to help with the taste of the mix. Feed with a syringe. Baby should eat close to 2 cc's more or less.

Well, they definitely took the previous mix of puppy milk and baby food mango better than they take the Joey BML. After much patience and coaxing, I got them to take the BML from my hand. And they really have not taken it well all day. Where they greedily took around 1.5 cc of the previous mix at every feeding, they have taken less than .5 cc all day on the BML. They took a little in the first feeding, would have none in the second, and just now took a little more (not enough to really measure considering how much was smeared on my hand). This last part I added about 15% puppy milk based on one post about that making them like it better, not sure if it helped.
Now I've got them in the shoe box again with a yogurt lid containing about 2 ccs of the mix and hoping they will take to it. The box is in a semi-darkened room away from everything. Not sure what else to do. It did seem they were at least investigating it, but I don't want to disturb them to check and see for sure.

This is dad again. Just thought I would update on the progress. Both babies have been doing well, growing, very active, eating better, and interacting with the remaining adults just fine. Aunty Gizmo has really stepped up as a surrogate mom. She grooms them frequently and they are often both hanging off her as she navigates the cage. Papa Blaze is doing ok with them as well, but he seems much less inclined to let them hang on him, though he is generally snuggled up with them in their "box" or pouch, and defends them aggressively if you try to reach in.
The two joeys are also developing some very distinct personalities. This project has become a sort of family effort with my son as the primary followed by me and my wife as back-ups. We've all gotten quite attached to them, especially my wife who lets them ride in her housecoat pocked quite a bit. One takes after the deceased mother who was named "Spaz" for a reason. She would "crab" at any provocation and was frequently know to bite or "go nuts". The little guy also does the easily provoked crabbing, often accompanied by the "I'm big and bad, you don't want to mess with me!" stance, though he often falls over on his back, still crabbing away. Unfortunately for him, the effect is far more comical than threatening. <grin> The other little guy is very calm and loves attention, willingly and energetically climbing aboard any offered hand. Almost like polar opposites.
So I guess all is as well as it can be. Thanks so much for all your help!
