not sure if this is the right spot to ask this, but the question was put to me and I had no clue! Are their sugar glider breeders in Australia and are they allowed to take sugar gliders from the states over there? I know I sound dumb asking these questions and I think I know the answeres but it would be greatly appreciated if someone else could confirm my thoughts on it and lead us in the right direction in both. thank you all in advance.

Hi

There are some breeders over here mostly in Victoria and South Australia where they can be kept legally with a permit.

As for your second question which I think is can breeders here import sugar gliders from the states. The answer is no unless a zoo or similar facility did a trade with a zoo or similar facility over there. Strict rules would includes things like microchips, the glider being in the same facility for 12 months prior to shipment as well as the usual quarantine laws etc. Considering sugar gliders are australian native animals, there would probably be no reason for any zoo or similar facility to import them. The general public as far as I am aware are not be able allow to import them and the same regulations would apply even if they were.

thats kind of what i figured. I have a customer of mine thats Aunt is in the states from Australia and she really wants one. She wondered if she could buy it here and take it home with her. I told her i didnt think that was allowed. Can you give me any names of breeders there or how she can contact someone personally so she can also find out where they are legal and what she needs to do? Thank you so much for info i appreciate it alot.

She might be able to buy sugar gliders here but it would depend on what state she lives in. She would also have to get the relevant licences. I can point you in the right direction if you know where she lives.

Marz, what states in Australia permit Sugar Glider ownership?

I am from Queensland and I have never heard of anyone owning sugar gliders before I started living in Thailand.

[censored], not that I need a license in Thailand.

Not sure I could handle living in South Aus. I loved Darwin and I used to have a Scaly Brested Lorokeet there (licensed).

How hard to get an educational display license is it?

I believe it requires you do displays and demonstrations and think you need to have other species of wildlife to come under the demonstrator's umbrella.
