I made a post yesterday in Glider Talk about Kiki's two year anniversary with me. It is with great difficulty that I type this.

Last night she appeared to have difficulty going to the bathroom and was straining quite a bit. I gave her some apple juice and a grape in hopes of the fluids helping. She came out of her cage last night, but sat in front of it just staring around.

This morning she was still strainig so I gave her a piece of apple and more juice to keep her hydrated. She appeared a little listless, but I figured she must be in a little bit of pain due to the pushing. By 12:30 this afternoon she exhibited respiratory problems.

We rushed to the vet and the prognosis does not look good. She thinks it is "megacolon", something common in cats. She said she has seen two gliders with this in the past six months, and sadly, both gliders did not make it. She said both were more advanced cases than Kiki, but she could not offer any hopeful prognosis.

She was administered an enema since her stomach was so bloated and sub-q fluids for hydration. She sent us home with metronidazole, metoclopramide, and trimethoprim sulfamethoxazole with mystatin to each be administered twice a day. I also got a lesson on administering sub-q fluids at home in preparation of further dehydration.

Her breathing is extremely labored and I am beyond sick with worry and grief. A little bit of the color has returned to her nose and feet, but not all. The fecal came back negative for giardia, but positive for trichomanosis and spirochetes. Hence the extra med.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Any advice? I'm desperate for any ray of hope at this point. I'm not sure I can go through the agony of losing another of my babies without knowing why.

Please say a prayer or send healthy thoughts her way.

Thanks you!

Dear Robin - I can offer nothing except my profound sympathy and prayers. I am so sorry - I wish I could offer some pearls of wisdom but I can't. I won't ask what brought this on but I will tell you that I'll keep checking the board and that I sincerely hope that all turns out well. Thinking of you and the little one!!

Hang in there. Rest assured that if anyone can rally the troops with additional information it will be Ellen ... God Bless Her.

It appears that you have the advantage of an extremely knowledgeable vet which so many people on this board do not. However, I do know that at times like these, that is little comfort.

We will all keep you both in our prayers.

I'm doing some reading on this now, but apart from congenital problems (and you would have known that before now?), it's associated with infection and bowel obstruction. Am I correct in this? If that's so, the meds prescribed certainly sound correct, Robin. Feel free to correct me, though. I'm just reading on this now, and you can't always trust everything you read....

My prayers, which I DO trust, are with you, though!

Robin, I am so devastated to hear that Kiki is sick. Your little princess will pull through. The troops have definitely been rallied and any new information will be heading your way. You're not alone... we will do all we can!

Thanks to each of you from the bottom of my heart! This is tearing me apart!

Yes, it is a bowel obstruction of some sort, Lucy. We do not believe it is congenital since she's been with me for two years with NO health problems of any sort, other than her small size. And there were no symptoms or strange behavior before last night. This, like most illnesses in gliders, was very rapid.

She is taking very small amounts of BML diluted with apple juice through an oral syringe every hour. (Actually, just a few drops at a time, but it's something!) She does not especially care for BML and never has, so this was my best option for getting at least some in to her little system.

Right now my main concern is the labored breathing. She is shaking. The vet was not sure if this was a result of some pain and discomfort or if perhaps she has a secondary infection since her immune system is currentl compromised. Either way, these meds should help in either case. But I need to keep her breathing.

Oh boy, this is going to be a long night.

Thank you again to everyone!

Robin,

I am so sorry to here about Kiki. From everything I can find on the condition and the trich. and spiro., you are doing all that can be done. I was not able to find anything Glider specific on the megacolon, but the prognosis seems to be dependent on the underlying problem that caused the condition. Hopefully the obstruction was removed with the enema and Kiki is on the road to recovery. Keeping you both in my thoughts and prayers.

Has her breathing improved any?

To dx her problem did they do an x-ray?.... as this will often show the obstruction and wither or not the bowel has ruptured. I have heard of surgery being done for an obstruction but if it has perferiated ....can only do supportive care.

With the labored breathing....does not sound good and sounds like she may already be septic. Only time will tell.

Sending prayers your way.

Please explain septic...She wanted to do an x-ray with contrast, but the visit today with all meds was $168.00. There simply isn't any more money since I am still paying on credit cards from when I lost Livi and almost lost Bella last summer.

I certainly don't want to lose her, but I am at a loss.

We just got home from work and there is still no bm. She did eat a small piece of apple though. I am hawing more fresh BML to dilute with apple juice in hopes that she will take this.

It took all her effot to climb into her box. I wrapped her up with her baby blanket to keep her warm. She has not taken any more food and her breathing is worse.

I'm not sure she'll make it through the night at this rate. If prayers could make it happen, though, then we are both truly lucky to have the wonderful people on this board.

I will post updates as I can.

Thank you all for your support! I keep re-reading these kind words so that I don't feel so alone right now. No one else but other glider owners seem to understand the agony ad helplessness.

Robin, I am sooo sorry....that you are having to go through this horrible pain and suffering of watching your glider slip away. Snuggle with her for as long as you can. I pray God will be speedy with a healing hand to end the pain you and your glider are going through.

The x-ray...often can show wither obstruction is from an impaction or if something unusual has been ingested to create the blockage. It also will show if the gut has ruptured as the film will show it spilling out into the abdom. cavity.

Septic means....infection. The body can no longer filter out it's waste material and thus it is reabsorbed and becomes toxic.

May God wrap his arms of comfort around you and your baby.

Robin,
Heartfelt prayers and thoughts are sent your way. I lost a glider 3 weeks ago and I still feel an emptiness for her. I miss her terribly but I am at peace knowing that she is no longer suffering. Just hang in there and hope for the best. Having the GC pulling for me and now you is the most wonderful feeling; they are like family.

Thanks to all the prayers and the wonderful people who stayed on the phone with me last night as I had my breakdown, my little girl made it through the night. I just returned from the vet, where I dropped her off to have the contrast studies done to find out what is causing the bowel obstruction.

She was up at 6:30 this morning trying to climb around on her cage. She did eat another small piece of apple and a few licks of yogurt. She is not giving up hope yet, and neither am I, although it is extremely difficult given the prognosis.

The main cncern now is the obstruction and the breathing. No bm all night and the vet said her breathing sounds "moist", meaning the infection is probably spreading. She will be having another enema as well to loosen up more stool in hopes that it will relieve some of the pain and pressure on her lungs and diaphragm.

I wil try to post when I hear the results of the x rays this afternoon.

Again, thanks to everyone here for your love and suport. I'm not sure what we'd do without our family here at GC!

Ok
Robin, I would not give her any yogurt as it binds humans. Also, fresh carrot juice is very cleansing to the colon. If you do not have a means of having it juiced, Gerber now sells it in a bottle similar to the yogurt juice. I also would not put yogurt juice in the BML for now, but just put cranapple juice instead. I am so sorry for you. I hope and pray for her healing.
