I didn't want to take the other thread off topic, so I will ask here. This makes no sense to me. If a glider is born a mosaic, and then powders out, how can you say it is then a possible platinum mosaic? I would think it would have to be born that way, period. ?
Sheila, I am taking this from your comment: "Sil many gliders that are mosaic don't start out as platinum, but become that when they powder out. The breeder can then go back and change it. Not all mosaics powder out."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Obviously, I am asking because of Prada. She is a mosaic and that is that. She has powered out beautiful, a very silver color and all the dark areas are barely visible anymore. Last time we talked Sheila, you had told me she has platinum in her lineage somewhere.
I think it is too confusing to now call her a platinum or silver mosaic (or whatever). Had she been born that way, that's another story. I am not a breeder, so it really doesn't matter. I would just like to understand.
So, anyone care to unconfuse me here?
Instead of calling them platinum colored mosaics I think we should just call them "powdered mosaics". I don't really like the name silver mosaics, but that is just my opinion.
Most of the mosaic joeys I've seen do get lighter or powder out with time. My Julian looks like a totally different glider then when I first brought him home. I am not going to change his coloring to platinum colored mosaic though. They're all the same gene mosaic.
Powdered mosaics! That would be a perfect solution! I wonder if Priscilla would like that or not.
Karin, on that other thread, we decided to call "Platinum Mosaics" Platinum COLORED mosaics, just to try to allieviate some of the confusion. But I think using the exact same word for a different thing is still going to be confusing for sure.
Platinum is a gene... and you're right, they are born that way.
Mosaics can also be born with the similar platinum coloring... but it seems that a lot of them are NOT born that way, and then eventually powder up and look so much lighter, and in fact, look platinum colored.
I actually think that might be an even better idea to call them Powdered Mosaics rather than platinum colored.
If your mosaic powdered out, it's not Platinum and Mosaic... but now what we're referring to as a platinum colored mosaic. If your lines have platinum lines in it... then there is a possibility to have a platinum baby, if paired correctly. At this stage, however, there is a lot of speculation of what to pair up for Platinums... but so far it's just theory. We think another year of breeding will help us to finally understand that gene and how to achieve it.
I hope that helps to answer some of your questions!
Thank you both....much better understanding. The whole "breeders can go back and change the title" part is just too confusing. Can you imagine trying to explain that in a few years to the new breeders? I love the idea them being referred to as powdered mosaics, but I am staying out of this simply because I am not a breeder per say.
Another ringer...does anyone know WHY they powder out?
The mosaic can be platinum or champagne colored when a baby. As the joey gets older the coat developes a powdered look over the champagne or platinum color. It looks as if baby powder had been sprinkled onto the back of the glider. The mosaic if Plat or Champ colored is not born with the Powdered look. The powdering does not appear on Grey colored mosaics.
As to Platinum or Champagne colored offspring I am not aware that they take on a Powdered Look, as I have only seen it with the Mosaics that were Champagne or Platinum colored.
Last time we talked Sheila, you had told me she has platinum in her lineage somewhere.
Ok, maybe I am missing something here, however, I thought it was determined that there were only two *true* plat lines as of right now that we know of, Haley and Silverbelle???
If that is the case, than I dont see how Prada could have plat in her lines as I just looked up Pandoras lineage and there is nothing there that would make me think Plat.
I LOVE the idea of calling them powdered out mosaics. It DOES make more sense.
Peggy, you are saying that a Platinum or Champagne will Powder out like with the Mosaics?
No Judie, I did not say that at all. I am saying I dont understand how Prada has platinum in her lines since from what I can see, there is no Haley or Silverbelle in the lineage.
Sheila wrote in this thread in Part One that some of her True Platinums are Champagne Colored. This would then indicate that there are two colors.... Platinum and also Champagne.
Champagnes will throw Platinum as Platinum can throw Champagne. This is totally confusing but I have seen it in the Mosaics and also with the Cremino Hets that are bred to WF Blondes.
She looks like a platinum mosaic to me. I have a girl like that, Skylar. I got her from Katarina and this was the only pic I'd seen of her, from when she was a joey:
But this is what I saw when I opened her pouch:
Your beautiful girl looks just like her.
I have always described a mosiac joey that was born with normal grey coloring, that gets lighter when older, powdered. The powdered coloring looks a lot different than the platinum coloring.
Karin, some gliders do not powder out completely - only half of their bodies. NOt sure what you are saying here. when someone says a possible platinum Mosaic they are saying the possibility that they may or may not turn a platinum color. This was taken when he was two years old
Peggy, the platinum coloring of a mosaic doesn't come from the platinum gene. It comes from the mosaic gene. True platinums and platinum-colored mosaics are completely different.
Nothing to add as I don't know the genetics that well- However I wanted to say that Prada has Such a nice face. I love the way her face looks so round!
