I was doing a bit of research, and it seems that (I pretty much already knew this) vitamin D is required to assist in proper absorption of calcium. However, it also helps maintain the proper level of phosphorus to calcium ratio in the blood. There are very few foods that contain this. Cooked salmon and mackrel being the easiest ones to feed our gliders. The others are things like cod liver oil, beef liver, stuff I wouldn't eat! Does anyone who knows more about this kind of thing than I do have any ideas?
PS, I am NOT talking about "diet" specifically, I am looking at supplimenting or something, just a way to better absorb calcium. We as people get our Vit D from the sun, or our milk. Our gliders get very little, if any of those two things.

Most of the Vit D in gliders diets come from the supplements that have Vit D3 added. For instance RepCal w/vit d3 or Vionate w/vit d3.

There are some who disagree with the supplementing with vit d3. It is thought that it accumulates in the liver over a period of time and harms the gliders. I am not sure anyone truly understands how effective vit d is as opposed to vit d3. One school of thought is that the gliders must have vit d3 because they are nocturnal and do not get enough exposure to sunlight. Vit d3 is supposed to work without the help of the sun. I have a lot of questions in my mind about this theory. Like what about bats in the wild that never see the sun. They sleep in caves during the day and feed at night. Some will argue that bats get the vitamin d they need from insects they eat. But what about fruit bats that never eat insects? There are even people in the larger cities who work shift work or in offices and ride subways that rarely are exposed to sunlight. And they do not supplement with vit d3 either. Lots of questions! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evil.gif" alt="" />
