We just brought a new rescue, Sydney into our care almost a month ago. Among many other problems, she came to us with her tail broken in 2 places. The day after we got her, she had about half of her tail amputated. Now granted she had surgery 4 weeks ago, I was wondering if anyone knew what the healing process should look like. Of course, the last 1/2 inch of the tail had to be shaved, and it's slowly starting to show signs that hair is growing back. The 'stub', so to speak, is noticeably darker than the rest of her tail...it's a very dark grey. She was given antibiotics to prevent infection, so I'm hoping that this is perfectly normal. I can provide pictures if necessary. Anyone have any experience with this?

Oh my, I'm starting to feel silly. Could the dark color possibly be the dark hair growing back? Please forgive me, I thought the vet snipped all of the black off of her tail. blush

My little girl (Wiley) has a short tail as well. Her feels more like bone and its not that flexible. Is that the case with yours?

From this perspective, that just looks like new hair growth coming through. The same thing happened to Wiley and her tail is filling back up nicely again.

haha i have a funny story about my Lucy.. when i first got her, i had no idea part of her tail was missing until i got her a buddy like 3 months later.. then i noticed Ricky's tail was quite longer! =P i was a little upset that the previous owner pulled a quick one on me but i had grown to love her the way she is and even think some gliders look odd with long tails though its really mine that sticks out from the bunch! Lucy's tail ends an inch-/+ before where there would be a black tip

I'd love to send you some pics of my "stub tailed" crews...they range in length from just the black part gone all the way to NOTHING THERE AT ALL (that didn't make me a happy camper when I found out how far the vet went...further than necessary! tant ) I have a grand total of 8 who fit in this category. From a wheel injury to being bitten by (something) to simply stressing out & chewing the ends off, we've been through it.

Oh, by the way: Sydney's tail looks GREAT! thumb

Have you noticed any gliding differences or the glider having to adapt because of a smaller tail? Just asking since I dont know what the general consensus is on that issue. Wiley jumps and runs around like a little maniac but doesnt glide too much. She may still be traumatized though so I dont know if its a mental or a physical issue.

Whew...I feel so much better knowing that it's just fur growing back! I initially thought that the end of the tail was turning black because it was dying.

And no, her tail isn't stiff and boney at the end, it feels the same all throughout her tail. I've also yet to see the shorter tail affect her gliding.

And minkasmom, if you want to send pics of your "stubbies", go right ahead!

Three of my rescues have short tails. It doesn't bother them in the least!
