This project is a group of members from all areas of the sugar glider community. We are owners, rescuers, and small hobby breeders. We all share one common goal: the health and welfare of sugar gliders. This project was started when several individuals in the glider community started working to prevent the glider breeding mills from continuing to sell gliders that are sick, malnourished, and or underage. It has developed into a community wide group of supporters. It is a united front.
Our Mission
The mill breeder Project is striving to put an end to the poor practices within the Sugar Glider Breeding Mills that are selling gliders at public venues, such as trade shows and county fairs that are sick, malnourished, and under age.
Our hope is that these mills will be made to comply with the proper USDA regulations, so that gliders will no longer be subjected to illness, harm, or death. In addition, we are also working closely with the CDC for the protection and health safety of the general public.
We are working on developing programs to help educate the public on the proper care, diet, safety, and health. To many sugar gliders are being sold at these shows that are infected with giardia, sick, underage, and malnourished. The housing conditions for the sugar gliders while at these shows are poor.
We are working closely with the Center for Disease Control to provide enough documentation from veterinarians who have treated Sugar Gliders shortly after purchasing from one of the mill breeders. Currently we are gathering veterinary documentation outlining the health condition of gliders sold by a mill breeder or its vendors. If you, or someone you know, has purchased a glider from a mill, please get a copy of your vet records and send them to:
If any of these Companies are scheduled to be in your location, please email the information to: director@millbreederproject.com or you may register at http://millbreederproject.com/index.php or Click on Photo.
Together we can make a difference! Thank you!

Great to see people finally putting a stop to glider mills, i personally bought one from 'pet shack' in malaysia and considering the vast number of stores they have and how each one has a lot of gliders (housed in poor conditions) i am sure they purchase from these 'comercial' mills. i for one will be sending my vet record in.

I have been concerned because there is a breeder sending 30+ gliders to two reptile stores in the Miami area. One very close to where I live in Miami and the other in the Broward area. These little gliders are very small for their age, or they are actually younger than the owners are being told. I have gotten several calls from people that have purchased a glider from the pet store and then not been able to handle the poor little thing. I got a call from a friend that bought one of my triplets and she goes into the reptile store in Broward and they have the same small little gliders. I was told that they are getting their gliders from Texas. How can I stop these from being sold. I haven't personally been into see the babies but is there any way I could try to stop them from getting these in. Who is a mill breeder in Texas?? I do know that one of the people that I have been helping to bond to her new little gliders said she was 33 gms and supposedly 12 weeks. She was parasite free but never handled and very scared. She is coming along but it just breaks my heart to see these little gliders being sold. Any suggestions

Just came home from a festival in Reno, NV. Custom Cage works was there, broke my heart. As I was also a vendor, I couldn't express my true opinions, but did tell lots of folks about Glider Central, and about my experience with purchasing a " breeder mill" glider vs from a reputable breeder. I would like to provide the promoter of the event with information/documentation on why most of us believe that the gliders are abused. I don't come here often anymore so please email me mnmtaxlady@sbcglobal.net. Thanks

So for the past two years, at least, there has been a mill breeder ath Iowa State Fair. Can anything be done to let the fair know about these people or to stop them from coming? Lindsay

Lindsay Yes, the best thing that you can do is to provide me with the name, address, phone # of the person(s) who schedule vendors for the fair. If you can do this, I will take it from there. Thank you for offering to help.

Hi! I just recently saw Pocket Pets today (Saturday) at the Discovery Mill Mall in Duluth Georgia. They told me that they will be there on Sunday at/until 7 pm. 5900 Sugarloaf Pkwy, Lawrenceville, GA‎ - (678) 847-5000‎ I was enlightened to take care of one sugar gliders--but I didn't know that they're selling sick gliders. They gave me a phamplet with their website: www.sugarbears.comI'm sorry to have been drawn to their booth but I personally wanted a pet that I can learn to take care of and love. I don't know how I would get one and they seemed to be "official".

I'm sorry if what I am doing isn't allowed or useful but knowing that this will/might be the last time I'll see the Pocket Pet group, I decided to go during work to ask them questions.
This is the picture of the booth: http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b290/aino10shi/Sugar%20gliders/PPP1.jpg
One of the 4 men showing pictures in a binder of successful customers and the sugar gliders with the family pet (dog, cat, etc) http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b290/aino10shi/Sugar%20gliders/PPP2.jpg
This is a pic of the rest of the booth; the boxes are 'starter kits' http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b290/aino10shi/Sugar%20gliders/PPP3.jpg
One of the two cages on the table (behind the booth) was uncovered to take one of the sugar gliders to show to the family who just purchased them http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b290/aino10shi/Sugar%20gliders/PPP4.jpg

I took the pictures with my cell phone. Around 4:13 pm, one of the 4 guys questioned me if I'm only taking pictures. He doesn't want me to record videos (I couldn't anyway because my cell phone doesn't have that feature) I asked about their address and phone number; one of the men told me that since they get so many customers, they don't have an address. He recommends me to email them on their website to a meeting place close to my house to pick up a sugar glider (if I decided to get one). I asked when will be the next time they'll come back to Georgia--he said they don't know and they usually get 2 days in advance to get ready to their next location. One family purchased one and the family man asked if they're going to carry the cage to the car; the PP guy just told them they'll bring it to them in the parking lot next to Sears (of the Discovery Mill Mall). The family were given the receipt and a CD. I noticed that none of the men wore name tags--their shirts just states ' Pocket Pets'. One of the men's name was "Brad" (one of the guys said his name to switch places of the booth). "Brad" is the bald guy you see in the picture. The pamphlet's website was different from the previous pamphlet I got on Friday. It was www.pocket-pets.org rather than www.sugarbears.com .

Last month, a mill breeder for suggies came to the fair where I live. He had a whole bunch of false information about gliders, and was selling little tiny bird cages that weren't nearly big enough. There must have been at least 20 gliders all stuffed into one little pouch, and all you could see was a jumble of fur and tails. The poor little guys were probably trying to sleep. I found out more about him and discovered that the joeys were taken away from their parents at too young an age, and many were infected with parasites and giardia. How can someone be so cruel and inhumane? It's unthinkable.

Jayne, If you could go over to the mill breeder Project Web site and give us the information on where these gliders were sold this would be a great help. Even though this was last year, having the information will help us to find out if they are scheduled to be back again this year.
For anyone who knows of previous locations to where they have been, please provide us with this so that we can start our research early. Having the information while they are there keeps our efforts to a minimum, so if we can know in advance this will give us ample amount of time to get prepared and organized.
Thank you!

Hello, I am new to the board and am learning a lot by reading all of the posts. Our glider was purchased at the Holiday Market in November 2008 at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro NC through (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets. I am lucky to have a happy, healthy, friendly glider. We have had no problems at all, and we all spend lots of time with our beautiful Olive. I did not see any crowded or mistreated gliders. The one thing I found odd though is that they actually had no gliders for sale at the show. We had to "order" one that was delivered to us 2 1/2 weeks later. We had to pick up the glider at a Red Roof Inn on a specified day. The only time I had a concern was when I was in the parking lot, and saw that the gentlemen were traveling in a small truck pulling an enclosed trailer. I remember thinking..were there Gliders in there traveling in a cold trailer (it was late November), or was that just the accessories and show materials? I asked them if they drove far, and they said they came from PA. I now find this really odd as I have read on this board that gliders are not legal in PA???? The gliders that customers were picking up were in one of 2 cages in their room, which were clean and had fresh fruit. Our glider eats a variety of fruits, some veggies, and yogurt and bread. We have soaken cheerios in apple juice as a treat and she loves that! She also eats the glider food recommended by (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets. I have not fed her any live insects yet. Anyways, I am sure they will be back this year at the Greensboro Holiday Market. My experience was overall very positive, but it sounds like it depends on the "franchisee" of (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets in the various geographic locations. Maybe some are more experienced and caring than others. I will say the company has been very good about sending monthly newsletters and tips for Glider care. I am actually glad I had the 2 weeks before getting our glider, so I could set up the cage, and read about care and prepare for her arrival. I felt informed and feel like the (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets company provided tons of training materials for a new owner. After reading this thread, I hope that the (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets company has not become something different that what I encountered. Gliders are such wonderful pets and any abuse is just sad, sad, sad.

Thank you Maura for sharing your experience with us. Your fortunate to have had a positive experience with (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets. Most people who have purchased sugar gliders from them have not been as fortunate as you.
There have been hundreds of sugar gliders that have been sold at Shows, Fairs, Flea Markets that have been sick, malnourished, to young, inbreed, and infected with parasites.
This is what we are concerned about.

It is not just that, though. My experience seemed positive AT FIRST... then I learned through GC and a few other sources that the (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets cages are too small, that they need a buddy, that they can't get along with other pets, that the diet they recommend is not nutritionally sound for them, that they need vet care... and SOOO much more. It wasn't that they were awful to ME... it wasn't that my (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets joey was sick or injured or too young... it wasn't that they didn't provide me with inforation and keep me updated at first... it was learning that I had been given VERY ppor information that made things so bad. Then, with hindsight, I thought about my own experience and realized that if I had known the truth I NEVER would have bought from them... I'd have found a reputable breeder and done all my research FIRST. Then I heard other people's stories and realized that (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets cares LESS about gliders or the people who want them as pets and more about MONEY... Which is EXACTLY why I am a founding member of S.P.I.N. I am glad your experience wasn't terrible, Maura- but the info they gave you and the diet they have you feeding and the cage they probably sold to you are all wrong for gliders. I am glad you chose this type of pet, and I am glad you found GC... but I hope the things you learn here help you make some necessary changes for your gliders' sake.

Thanks for the info, and I am so glad to have found this board. I actually found this board searching on Google for (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets info on Heat Rocks (which I didnt think was necessary in the summer and could be harming the glider), so that is a good thing! I have removed the heat rock from Olive's cage now. The biggest difference I have seen so far is the message about diet. I had a "gut feeling" that Olive (although healthy and vibrant now) is not getting enough of a balanced diet through fruits, a little yogurt, and "Glide R Chow". She really never even eats the Glider R Chow much. I think I will need to order a couple items though to start making and freezing the food, as I live in a small town where less common items are hard to find. We are considering getting a cage buddy for Olive, and I will read more on that as well. Thanks for the advice! Maura

There are a few diets that you may choose from that contain ingredients that you can pick up from your local grocery store. Also for the supplements needed we have vendors that you can purchase from in our Glider Things forum. Here is a link to diets The most popular ones are the HPW, BML, Suncoast, or the Pet Glider diet.

I did not have such a great experience with (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets. I bought two gliders a fixed male and female. And a years worth of their [censored] food and vitamins! And as of now 440.00 out in vet bills. The male had loose stools then the female too. (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets wanted me to give them PEPTO!! I will get the final lab test back on Thursday and I am hoping it is a clean bill of health finally. This is one of the worst buying experiences I have ever had. Another family that bought two also had one of theirs DIE! (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets offered to replace it for 100.00 which only tells me they are still making a profit at that price! I have also been replacing everything I bought from them food, vitamins and cage with the right stuff. I am mad at myself for not researching the company and ignoring my gut feelings. The good side to the situation is my gliders do seem to be getting better. It was touch and go for a while there. I will get a vet report if that will help keep (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets from doing this to other people and gliders.

A vet report and any receipts you have from (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets will help. Make sure you send those to LSardou (Linda). The more evidence against (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets the better!

We are here to help in whatever way that we can to get your little ones on a happy and healthy pattern. If you would take a few minutes to register over on the mill breeder Project web site www.millbreeder.com and post your information there, this will help to compile our data. Also, I would appreciate if you can send me a copy of all your vet reports, lab reports, and any follow up reports for our records. All personal information sent will be kept confidential.
I am happy to hear that your little ones are starting to get better. I too went through the same thing as you almost 4 years ago. It took my one glider almost 6 months to recover from malnutrition and giardia.
Please don't hesitate to ask questions, we are here for you and your babies and will do whatever we can to help.
