I called the vet today to see how much it would cost me to have them come out to my home and check the animals and sign papers, etc.

$130 just to come to my home
$55 per animal
$175 per hour visit fee
Plus whatever fees for signing papers, etc.

Does this sound about right?

Also, will they only need to check my sugar gliders, or every animal in my home? (I have 37 other animals of other species that aren't considered exotic, that's gonna be an outrageous price if I have to pay for each one to be seen at that time, because the vet office mentioned seeing each animal and the total would be around $3000).

I've heard a lot of people say their vet will come to the house and charge a nominal fee, like $150 or so, but this is gonna rob my bank. I wouldn't sell enough gliders in a year to pay for the vet fees alone (of course I'm not trying to make a profit, but this is still whew). I of course don't mind paying my regular vet fees, but I didn't realize it would be this expensive to be USDA certified.

You need to find a new vet! That is outrageous! They just check your gliders, not the other animals in your home.

my vet wanted to charge me a minimum of 500 dollars so needless to say I am not USDA certified!

It's the only vet within a 2 hr drive that has any experience with sugar gliders. They'd have to drive an hour and a half just to come to my home, thus the high fee.

I'm not comfortable with the vets in my town, as I've spoken with them about my gliders and they don't have any idea of what they are really.

As far as I know, there is only one other USDA licensed glider breeder in NC, and they're a wholesaler. I guess I'm stuck.

Even if you are not comfortable with your local vets TREATING your gliders, perhaps you can still have one of them do the inspection for you. Nothing says the vet doing the inspection is the one that has to treat your gliders.

I had one vet offer to come out for $50 plus BBQ (after I offered and suggested he bring his daughters to let them ride the horses for a bit).

Another vet said $50 for the trip providing it was on a Sat after office hours and he didn't already have a golf game scheduled.

I'm located in Roxboro, on the NC/VA border.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the vet that signs the papers has to be the one you see to continue care for the 1 year checkups. Doesn't there have to be a plan in place with the vet already?

There is no reason you can not change vets. I have 3 different vets that I use to care for my gliders depending on WHAT they need and how urgent it is.

The one that would do my inspections is the one I use for neutering. But for anything serious like illness or injury, I go to another vet all together. The second vet has more experience and has a lab right there in her office. The first vet does not.

Ok
The purpose in using the same vet is so that he can see the conditions of your housing. If you have lots of other animals in your house, you might be more susceptible to more parasites and diseases than someone who just has sugargliders. When you bring a sick glider in, the vet thinks, ok they have cats, dogs, ferrets, mice. He can then run his test and course of treatment based on what he knows the conditions are like. The USDA sometimes ask to see your medical records. I think you should find a cheaper vet to do all of it.

Our vet charged $250. Checked ALL gliders weighed ALL gliders and did two fecals. Flat fee.

My vet charged 114.00. weighed 3 ( I have scale here for weights anyway) Checked one male, one female, and one baby. I send in fecals per request. And we are checking one this time, due to new addition in last several months. She makes sure I have proper cleaning supplies, and when I get follow-up in mail, she writes it all down for inspector. She really liked my enrichment program, and also put that in her report.
Initally I took several gliders in June to see how she reacted to them. Gave her copy of my policies and website. Did fecals, weight, exams. IT was good experience gliders.

Edited: So I talked with the actual vet today that will be making the visit to my home. It's going to be $85 for the trip, $175.50 minimum for the one hour and then $109.50 for filling out the paperwork. So $370 + tax. I'm scheduled for January 13th. Crossing my fingers that it won't cost me more! He offered to go ahead and check out the chinchillas while he was here just in case I ever need meds for them. Wish me luck!
