I am just looking for a couple of opinons. I took one of my gliders for the first vet visit today( she is very healthy). The vet told me he only see's about two gliders a year. I mentioned to him about the just for vet section of this site, and he seemed interested. He asked if I could bring in any material on them. So I am wondering if I should stick with this vet? Should I trust that he will know what to do in case of an emaergency? Has anyone been in this situation and have done what I am doing? I already use this vet for my other animals, and I really like him. any ones's oppinion is greatly appreciated. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thanx.gif" alt="" />

no, I live in Jacksonville. I know that there are a couple of vets in Newburn and Raleigh, but both of those are a long ride. I thought maybe I should try one right down the road. But, if I have to I will drive a longer distance.

I personally would prefer a vet who is willing to learn, (remembers what he went to school for) rather than someone who thinks they have all the answers and is not willing to see them..

Give him as much information as you can and give him the link to the vet section here at GC. Also, ask him if he's ever heard of/referred to VIN (Veterinary Information Network) on the internet. My vet says it is a vets-only resource that is excellent & has been very helpful to her in learning about gliders. When I first started bringing my gliders to her, she was not very familiar with gliders either, having only seen a few before mine. She has been very proactive in learning as much as she can about them & she is always the first to let me know when she doesn't have experience with something that comes up. Personally, I think I couldn't have a better vet, even though she had limited experience before she started caring for my gliders... She's definitely not inexperienced now <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />.

I asked Miss Ellen just recently about the "vets only" section and she said it has been closed/removed. It wasn't getting any responses for quite some time. I do understand though, that the VIN is a very good vet resource.

A vet that is willing to listen to the glider owner is WAY much better then one that already thinks they have all the answers. My vet told me he wants me to bring him all the possible info I can get for each "issue" I might have with my gliders, such as different neutering techniques, meds for different things, such as parasites, bacteria, injuries, pain management. He said after I told him about GC, that collectivly, we have more knowledge about sugar gliders then what he will probably learn in his career. But he does want to LEARN!

When Sebastain SM his tail, we discussed different treatments. He gave his opinion on how he "thought" it should go, then I gave him the suggestions I got from GC. He really listened and we together decided on the best course of treatment.

Same thing about neutering. He said he removed the pom and when I told him that I prefered it be left and my reasons, he agreed that leaving the pom sounded like a better way to go. He said he had just never heard of it being done that way before.

A vet that is willing to listen and learn can be the best vet to have.
