I called the makers of wheat germ. On my container it says to refrigerate after opening. They said that it would go rancid from the oils in the wheat germ in just a couple of days. I have a feeling this is not a good idea to put into a mealie farm bedding. They also said that wheat germ's refrigerator life is 6 months after opening. Thought I would pass this information along.

Thanks, I wondered how long it was good after opening!

Out of curiosioty! What is the brand name of the wheat germ you called about? Was just wondering if it is the same one used in the BML or if it is crude wheat germ.

Charlie... didn't know there was a specific wheat germ for BML..I just got a jar of "wheat germ". This is Kretschmer wheat germ.. doesn't say whether it is crude or not, at least looking over the label, just all the wonderful advantages wheat germ has. What kind of wheat germ do you use? does it say uncrude?

You got the right one! I was just curious as usual. You brought up a good point about keeping it refrigerated. Mary and I have a bad habit of checking expiration dates on everything as well as the refrigeration requirement.

I have seen others mention putting wheat germ in their mealie farm. Hope they read your post.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to up my bran and remove the germ.

I use the same product for BML, as well and just opened a new jar just last night, funny ....checked for the 'refrigerate after opening', but it was not listed on the jar. I still refrigerated anyway.

Another note:
All consumable products should have a listed shelf life, or expiration date. Unfortunately, not always are they easily found on the packaging label, the lid or top or bottom (wherever.). They are not required to give information, such as what uhoh posted. In all actuality, most consumers just assume that the products are good when they purchase them, not considering such facts, and also due to human error, which DOES happen, grocers or other vendors do miss products that have already expired for use. So Charlie, don't be too hard on Mary!

Thanks again.

Someone suggested to me that I might like the honey oat flavored wheat germ, and I was wondering...would that be an interesting addition? Or would the added flavor be bad for the gliders? Just something I've been thinking about...

Funny how some products do not have instructions for storage. I don't think I ever saw any storage instructions on a box of breakfast cereal.

If Mary had her way we would have a large walk-in refrigerator. She puts everything in the frig. Meal, flour, sugar, ketchup, meal worms, mustard, etc. etc. She even freezes the store bought bread.
