questions for fellow reptarium owners #81330

I have some questions for all of you fellow reptarium owners out there.

First how to you line the bottom of your cage?

I have several pieces of fleece cut to 30”x 30” I tuck in 3 at a time inside the cage under the bars at the bottom. Every day or at least every other day I pull out the top layer, shake it out outside and throw it is the wash and hand it dry.

Recently they have started burrowing in between the layers throwing off everything!

So… I now put an additional blanket in the bottom just sitting on top in a wrinkled pile. They love it more than their cage pouches! That also gets shaken out and washed regularly.

For the people who use puppy pads. Where do you get them? How often do you change them? Aren’t they too small to cover the whole bottom of the cage?

My post was prompted by some peoples comments about it not being safe for them to walk directly on fleece that has pee and poop on it. So now I am worried

Okay now about zippers. Has anyone had problems with them trying to escape? Do you guys use zipper locks?

Finally does anyone else use their rept for tent time?

I have a tent also but when it has gotten pretty late I don’t always feel like taking the time to set up the tent so I just climb right in. (After pulling out the top layer of fleec). Their have been a number of times that I have fallen asleep curled up in the bottom of the reptarium.

I am interested in all of your responces!

Thanks

-Annette

The only part of your question that I have an answer for is the puppy pads. You can get them at Petco, but if you don't have bars separating the gliders from touching the pads, then you shouldn't use them.

Puppy pads have scented chemicals added to them to make the puppies want to mark them with their scent and pee on them. This chemical can get on the gliders feet when they walk on it. They then ingest the chemical when they groom themselves. Though not harmful to a puppy because of the small doses, the glider is significantly smaller, and a small amount is all it takes to make them sick or even die.

I have heard of people using Eucalyptus substrate to cover the bottom of reptariums. It looks a lot like bark mulch, but it's made from eucalyptus trees. It also has a pleasant smell that gliders like. You have to buy the kind that's made for bedding/litter because other kinds are mixed with reptile substrate which has a lot of dust that's bad for the gliders respiration.

Good luck!

I think I will stick with the fleece in that case. my system seems to be working for me. because I sit in the cage with them alot I don't want to use any traditional bedding material.

WeeFuzzy,
I think alot of people use puppy pads in reptariums so I hope your post is helpful to them!

I use the puppy pads and get the deluxe large size which I put under the rep. They pee on the walls and it rolls down, they pee on the floor and goes through the rep to the puppy pad and keeps the floor dry and their feet don't get on it and they can't bury under it. I used to use my reps for tents all the time. We had a blast. I have a room now for them, but miss the intimacy with the close quarters in the rep. Good luck. Oh yea, I've never had a problem with them unzipping, but chewing might be an issue. Just keep a look out for holes.

I also use fleece to line the bottom of mine. Mine are cuy 60 X30 so it's folded. Mine will sometimes go to sleep under the top one too. I haven't had any problems with the zipper I just make sure it's in the top corner.

[:"blue"] I use the repts for permanent housing however I do not use fleece on the inside of the repts because I have twelve gliders in three family units, and they delight in playing hide 'n seek with each other so putting fleece in the bottom of the repts would literally make their night

I use the largest puppy pads since I use the 260 gal repts as well as the human bed pads which are a little cheaper as well as a little larger. These are put under the rept on the floor. This means that you will need to vacuum out the inside of the rept about every other day to get the solid waste and food particles out.

Someone also posted they use the vinyl tablecloths that have a cotton backing which can be purchased at WalMart for just about nothing since they can be washed and reused. When using these the vinyl side is placed next to the floor. These are NOT to be used inside the rept.

My gliders have never tried to unzip the zipper or chew through the rept however if you suspect you have chewers, a rept is not the way to go. [/]
