This is very hard for me to do....... I would like for this to stay in health as long as it can please, as one of the gliders, Yuki, still has hope of making it through all of this. I am going to try to paste as much as I can from the post on my forums, but if I miss some, feel free to check it out here:
http://www.glidersanonymous.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=4028

I would like to thank everyone that has shown me nothing but hope and kindness and love and that has helped shine a bit of light on my face through all of this. Thanks to Ellen for helping to encourage me that this needed to be posted here as well.
=============================================
I have no clue what happened. They were fine Tuesday night and even Wednesday morning.. Takara hogging the wheel as usual and Yuki staring at her waiting for his turn.

I got home from work at 4:15 and put on a robe to take a shower quick b/c I was meeting a friend for dinner before class... I went in to grab their food bowls to take upstairs and wash and she was laying faced down towards the back of the cage... liefless... i picked her up and she winked at me and held on tight but was barely breathing. yuki seemed fine and the others seemed fine as well so I threw on clothes and rushed to the vet. They sub-q'ed her immediately and put her in an incubator. They told me it looked like she had the onset of hypocalcemia aka lack of calcium which was very odd to me and the ONLY thing i could think of was maybe yuki was hogging the food b/c i feed everyone the same thing every night and up the cal/protein for the pregnant ones (including her)... they also said she might have an infection so they had her on liquids, calcium injections and antibiotics.

So I came home and Yuki was just looking around the cage I figured he was looking for her... they are inseparable. So I rushed and made it for the last hour and a half or so of my class... came home and he was hanging onto the top of the cage shaking.... I picked him up and he stared hissing... so I put him in an incubator and was goign to try to feed him some yogurt and pedialyte until i could take a shower and eat but he would just land in the food and not move and started shaking really bad but he was active... so i screwed the shower and food and brought my dinner with me and rushed to the vet again at 10 last night. They told me he was shaking pretty bad but seemed to be alert and okay. They said it looked like he had the same issue. They also said Takara seemed to be getting a little stronger and had eaten about 2cc's of an applesauce mix orally....

They told me that it again seemed to be a calcium deficiency but this was the emergency vet and not the on call exotics specialist I saw earlier. I told them to get the emergency specialist in there b/c she would know more and I want to know what this is..... I cannot be due to diet b/c their bowls are clean every morning and no spilled food so someone is eating it and since all of them get the same thing and have for a year I cannot see how it would be diet related..... I also don't know how it was so sudden ......

I have taken their cage out of the glider room as well as anything they might have come in contact with (food bowls pretty much are the only thing.. and some pouches)...... I have thrown all their food away and am starting from scratch tonight with new batches and steralized containers...... everyone else is active and alert....

The hopsital assistant called me at 2am to let me know Takara had passed on and that Yuki was in serious condition.. having frequent seizures..... but I have not heard an update as of yet today. I am hoping they let my vet sit in on the necropsy that is getting sent out for lab testing.... and I want them to check for bacteria and parasites in yuki as well...... Takara had two joeys in pouch about a month along.

vet just called me.. they are going to do a necropsy and biopsy on takara... say that yuki is not responding to the calcium and glucose they are giving him and not even sure if his blood pressure is stable enought o take a blood test..... The exotics vets are really at a loss right now... nothing had changed in their playtime, routine, housing, or anything..... I don't see any toxins or anythign in the room being an issue either b/d I would at least think the younger joeys in the room would've had some symptoms first. The vet now agrees it is not diet related and is leaning towards bacteria or toxins.

The only thing that makes sense to me is a dormant bacteria. Takara had a bug when she was younger and was treated and tested fine after two weeks.. when I got her I had her tested the next day as well and she was fine....

They are going to try to get a biopsy and send it into a lab for testing...
===========================
update noon Thursday: Yuki is being injected to be fed b/c he isn't a fan of the syringe. He is also getting shots of calcium and antibiotics.... he's no longer shaking or having seizures but is not moving much either.. just resting and they said he looks very depressed... my poor yuki
=======================================
update Thursday evening: They found nothing wrong at a first glance with Takara and are sending her liver and tissue samples urgently to the labs for testing....

Yuki is not doing well.. he is no longer having seizures but he is depressed and not eating..and he looks like takara did when I found her... I just hope he's peaceful and not hurting now. He's still at the hospital. I brought in some food for him to see if he would eat something familiar.. they said if he doesn't start eating they are going to have to tube feed him.. my poor angel...

The rest of the gliders are doing well.. all have fecals in to be tested just to be sure.... i have thrown out all their food and will be staritng from scratch as well as doing huge bleach cleaning of everything this weekend... Please keep Yuki in your prayers.
=======================================
update midnight Friday: I didn't get another 2am call which means Yuki is still alive. The doctor called to update me at midnight and informed he was able to eat 1.5cc's of the food I brought in. He wasn't eating anything they tried to give him via syringe, so me bringing in some leadbeaters was his last hope before tube feeding. I am going to call aroung 7:30 for an update should have had another feeding around 7.

I'm so sorry this is happening! Takara was a dream for you for soo long and then you finally got her and now she's gone... I can't even imagine how you must be feeling right now.

I'll pray for Yuki, I hope that he makes it! And I'll pray that the test results on Takara come soon so you'll know what happened. It's gotta be killing you to not know

*hugs*

Thanks so much everyone. It really does help to hear those words of hope. I think what is driving me crazy is that no one knows for sure. It really is up to the pathologist now with Takra's tissue and liver biopsy to see if they can figure anything out. The necropsy didn't show anything significant. So now, they can only give me what they think is wrong and hearing a different thing every time I check is driving me mad. I want the best for Yuki and also want to ensure my gliders aren't under any harm.

All of the other 10 seem to be doing fine.. joeys and adults.

My heart hurts so bad...

My prayers for your little guy! I know the heart ache of the "not knowing why". I hope that the tests will come back with an answer for you and to help your little one.

Aww..TMarie..
I know how hard it is to lose a baby and not know why. Since you KNOW they are eating the calcium, the next question would be, why aren't they seeming to absorb it?

Have they given any injections of antibiotics along with the calcium, etc? (I may have missed it, if it was in the post)..at this point I'd think the absorbtion would have to be secondary, the result of a bug or parasite keeping them from absorbing it. They need to treat whatever is keeping the calcium from being absorbed.

And know it isn't necessarily anything you did, or could have forseen. Bugs can come even from food in the grocery store..and with so much of our produce coming out of Mexico and South America any more-their standards aren't as good as ours, and frequently contaminated water is an issue...it can carry any number of things, and sometimes can be next to impossible to wash or trim any potental hazard away-it's one of the things that really worries me. I've read and heard of several deadly HUMAN outbreaks from contaminated produce from South of the border-fatal in some cases..going back to the water they use on the crops. On one case back East several years ago, cilantro was the culprit-it had been "cleaned" before shipping with contaminated water. Several people died, and others had permanent damage, before they could track the source. Nothing we can do can prepare for every eventuality.

I hope your little one pulls through this. All my hopes and prayers with little Yuki.. Keep us updated.

Nevermind, I see it. (told you it could be me..) Might suggest a combination of metronidazole to cover a potential parasite and anerobic bacteria in addition to the antibiotic, if they think he can handle the combo-just to make sure all the bases are covered as well as possible.

It could be the food.. it could be something else... but everything I think of.. nothing seems to make sense. Maybe it's just me. Takara did have a bug before she came here but she was cleared of it by her breeder's vet AND my vet... so maybe it came back up maybe b/c of stress.. (she was pregnant).. but how did it hit her and yuki so hard at the exact same time then????

if it was food poisoning.. why just them.. everyone is fed the same thing the same way every night.. i had joeys younger than them eating on their own you would think would be affected first...

if it was soemthing in the air.. why didn't the 4 and 5 week old joeys get sick first.. why wouldn't ANY of the other animals (all in the same room) be showing symptoms....

Takara's liver wasn't enlarged so I dunno... none of it seems to add up to me... they aren't looking at calicum def. anymore.. they were when only takara was ill but when yuki's sympoms showed a couple hours later they ruled that out....

=====================================
latest update: they were able to get a little blood from him this morning but not enough to run more than glucose and calcium levels....

he is being fed through a catheter as he refuses to eat out of a syringe...

this morning he was more dehydrated than usual and they had to really up his fluids and are not trying to see if he's losing anything through his kidney or urinary tract......

but said he pretty much looks the same..... they are hoping to rehydrate him a lot so they can pull a blood sample

Sometimes it's near impossible to pinpoint. Maybe something got into one piece of fruit and not to the others...perhaps their resistance was lower for some reason-it can be so difficult to tell, and even harder to determine a cause or source, why it struck this one and not that one...and it's so hard for us to deal with when in additon to not knowing why, we don't know exactly what, either. As far as I can see, the vet is doing everything possible. The one suggestion is all I can think of..it's the combo that finally cleared Riker's head infection, when antibiotics alone for months weren't doing it. Still don't know what was in there, but whatever it was, the combination of antibiotic and metronidazole apparently got it. I wish I could come up with more, but that's the only thing I can think of left to try.

thanks Jen.. I just talked to Dr. Stewart and got the update I added to the post. I am stopping in to see him again right after work here in a half hour and I will definately mention that to her. I just hope he's not suffering. I really want to find out the underlying cause but is this hurting him.... will it only make it harder on him to keep this going forever... i'm so at a loss for words and i am so confused... i just wish they'd rush takara's results faster (even tho it really has only been a day but it seems like eons) maybe there would be something in there to help him...

thanks for all the hugs and wishes and prayers.. i will pass them along to him when I stop see him in an hour.

Tonia yesterday morning Tonya (mystical angel) called and told me as much as she could about what was going on with your two little ones. I am afraid I was baffled also. The only possible thing I could think of was the issue Shelia had with some of her gliders once. As I recall it was an airborne bacteria that was effecting all of her gliders. She could explain it better than I can.

At this time I am afraid all we can do is pray that the vets discover what the problem is. It was a very good idea you had to take some of the regular diet into the vets. Nothing like mom's cooking when you are feeling low.

Our hearts go out to you. We know too well the anxiety of waiting and wondering in these situations.

I am so sorry for the pain of loosing Takara. She was such a beautifull and special little girl. Sending Get Well Wishes to Yuki for a speedy recovery.

As to the mysterious illness Sheila had in her glider room... it was an air borne type bacteria caused from high humidity. Clostridium spores floating in the air.... randomly contaminated some of her gliders through their food.

Thanks all. I had fecals ran on all the gliders still here and they all came back negative. So I guess I am back to square one. I still have some food samples in case they decide to test them but have made completely new for the suggies. Yuki is doing alright... he doesn't move though.... everytime I go see him he just holds his arms around me and just keeps breathing. They said today they were able to get him to lick the cathether some as they were feeding him.. a spark of hope. He also opened his eyes REALLY WIDE twice in the half hour I was there visiting him, which was a ray of sunshine to me to look into his sweet little eyes.. my poor baby. My vet looks like she's going to cry everytime she sees us together..... everyone is completely baffled but I can only hope the pathologist can shed some light from takara's samples...

Well today was a nice day... and a well needed one. I had a small claims suit to go to in the morning. When I came home around noon I had a call that they were able to get Yuki hydrated and were going to try a blood test. They said he's fighting the catheter more and trying to eat on his own. Then I walked in and found a gorgeous music box called a worry box sent to me by the GA members. It is blue velvet and has angels inside and it plays wind beneath my wings... Then TnR came over and helped me with triple clean day where I washed everything three times, mopped floors, changed the wall cover and everything else in the house and by that time, Suz (sugarglidersuz), Cyndi (cgarnes), and Helen (glider playroom) came over to keep me company.. they ordered me pizza and brought me toys and we made toys as well... it was so nice and so well needed.

Around 6pm I heard from Dr. Stewart again. Yuki was able to give a blood sample. It showed slightly high (but not unusual) white cell counts and high sodium which has us wondering again.... when Takara's results come back, hopefully everything will tie in together. thanks so much everyone for the warm wishes.

Glad Yuki is hanging in there and getting a little stronger.

sounds like the GA support group gave your morale a boost also. You needed that I know. Nothing like a bunch of giggling girls to take your mind off your problems.
