what a disaster.. I had to seperate her from her mate, and she is taking antibiotics. I hope it all works out. And for all who were wondering. We think that Tiki (my last glider) had died from parasites, although, when she was last tested before death.. she didn't have them. We are just hoping that Meka will be ok, and that Gabe does not have them.

Sometimes they don't show up, and sometimes vets -- even experienced vets -- don't know what the parasites look like under a microscope. TMarie asked a really good question. You'll need to treat all the gliders in proximity to Meka -- many times more than one will have the same illness.

ya! Meka was tested, but we didn't know she would have parasites. She has giardia. And we will also have to probally treat Gabe, because he has been with her for a few weeks.

It is rather late for seperating the two gliders. The male has been exposed to the parasite already and needs to be treated now. Stress is hard on a glider with Giradia. It is possible she was a carrier and with the stress of recently moved...this may have triggered the illness. It is best to treat all the gliders. It is easily transfered to other gliders through cross contamination...food dishes, toys, cage wire and you. Best to treat all the gliders and have it done with. When purchasing a new glider...suggest housing seperatly and in different location from other gliders for min of 30 days. Health check should be done in the beginning too. Even if animal checks out ok...still needs to be isolated just in case anything was missed. How long have you had this glider who is ill?

This scenario happened to me when I brought Marge home. The stress, we believe, caused the outbreak of Giardia and I had to treat her and Bugsy. It's a nasty little bugger, as you know, so it's a very good thing you have found out it is there! As has been said, all gliders that were in contact need to be treated - better safe than sorry. Please keep us updated on your wee ones.
Also, retesting should be done a couple of weeks after the meds are discontinued, as well as when they are initially discontinued. Sometimes the parasite will not show up the first time, but will the next time.

I know that in treating giardia in humans we use Flagyl and that is considered an antibiotic.

Thanks, crittermom. You are exactly on target.

According to my vet, cage mates should be treated as well, and other gliders (in other cages) should be tested, and perhaps treated. She said parasites usually come from some external source like fruit, and if cages are fed the same thing, they probably all need to be treated...ugh, I know, but better safe than sorry.

[:"green"]Since we are not vets, you should really check with your vet to see what he recommends. Several people have already given their opinion of what should be done as far as other gliders in the house, however, it seems that you need to verify it with your vet. [/]

[:"green"] You might want to just give the vet a call and ask about treating the other glider just to be on the safe side. vets normally do not mind calls with questions about recent visits [/]

yea, lol. The only problem is we are vet hopping trying to find the best one. Although, what i am doing for now is just having them seperated. Meka is the one being tested, not Gabe. My parents wont take Gabe to get tested.. because well.. they are not to fond of him. But.. I am hoping to make my parents take him. Even though he's a little cranky, he still deserves a check up and I want all my gliders to be happy and healthy. But for now, Meka's gotta be my focus. I have her in a solitary cage, and it gets cleaned along with all of her items everyday. I'm hoping she'll get better soon! And that her mate will too, if he has them!

Bewildered... It's very important that both gliders be treated for giardia. It is HIGHLY contagious and these gliders were together. Please call the vet who gave you the medicine for Meka and find out if he recommends treating both gliders as a precautionary measure. And make sure you get the proper dosage based on Gabe's weight. As Bourbon said, get them BOTH treated and pput them back together. The stress of separation can cause even more health problems. It's always better to be safe than sorry. I would hate to see anything happen to these little ones.

Side note, the stress of them being seperated can and most likely will cause the giardia to overact and get worse in the male if not treated. These parasites can sit dormant for a while...then explode into a serious situation.

Now that Meka is with joeys - the Dad plays a HUGE role and them being apart is quite risky.

Every animal and human in your house needs to be treated. Because giardia is highly contagious and can cross human and animal lines you must also be tested and treated. You could be a carrier and if your gliders recover then you might just be able to give it back to them. Every one that is in your house needs to be tested. Everything you have touched needs to be sterilized. Try to keep away from other animals and people until you do.

Giardia is contagious and can pass like that but it's not HIGHLY contagious. I had two siblings have it in a family of 8 and no one else caught it for the two weeks they were under medication......
It is best to be safe though. Best of luck to you.

Not to fear Bewildered!!! I have done much research on this topic when I too thought my gliders had this parasite. It has not been confirmed but it is well suspected that there are many kinds of this parasite. At one point there was one that was called Beaver Fever because it affected only beavers at a national park. It is possible to transmit from an animal to a person but not too easy. Specially if you keep a clean cage and you wash your hands before and after you have contact with your glider. It can only be transmited orally.(By ingestion) There are MANY web sites with good facts about this parasite which is found in the stool. The best advice I found in a website was this: "This disease may be contagious to people from infected animals so good sanitary practices, like washing your hands after handling an infected subject is recomended" ***Notice there was no RED ALERT in this recomendation.I am sure you are taking very good care of your little ones and are very watchful of their health and behavior. Keep a calm and peaceful attitude and I am sure you and your little spell casting gliders will be fine. Much like me...some people are more sensitive to the spell these creatures cast than others!

I placed Meka and Gabe in their cage together, and they are seeming to be doing quite well! and they are both being treated for giardia.

Bewildered and I spoke on the phone for a very long time concerning the giardia, the joeys, putting them together as well as follow up testing.
she was initially very worried, because she had already lost one, without a diagnosis, but hopefully, she is more comfortable now. One of the first things I told her was to relax, we discussed cleaning the cage thourly, and medicating all the gliders in the home, we discussed stress, as well as the effect stress may have on the giardia itself.
my question at this time would be how is she doing? does she seem to be gaining her weight back? has the loose stools gotten better? how is the progress at this time?

Meka has been on her meds for a while now (still), but her stool is still loose, and she still seems to be straining while releasing diahrea. I'm not sure what to do. My vet has just sent off a stool sample to be checked at a nearby lab for any remaining parasites. I don't know what is going on inside Meka, but it is starting to worry me.
