I am having a really hard time. Sedric seems to have a really fast growing tumor around his rear end. I noticed it this morning, so it is growing fast. He is using the bathroom fine, but he has been spending alot more time in his pouch. It has been about 4 days since he has met me at the door of his cage for dinner. Every night I start running the water faucet in the kitchen and he knows that it is time to eat and gets up and waits. I think the last time he got up to meet me was Tuesday. He hasn't been much into playing lately either, and has been spending most of his time in his pouch. He even put his favorite toys in his pouch with him, and hasnt played with them lately either. Now here is the REALLY BAD part, the last time I took hime to the vet he freaked out. He started shaking almost like he was having a seizure, and he started throwing up, it was really bad. This wasn't the first time this happened either. He doesn't handle strangers messing with him, and if he is in a strange place it is even worse. I mean he has a complete melt down. The last time I took him in I really hoped that I never would have to again. I just don't know what to do. After the way he has been this week, I am sure, I mean I am positive that if I take him to the vet, that will be it, he will be done. It is so hard because I know that if I take him the trip alone will kill him, not to mention all the test they will want to do. I can't tell you how many times I have thought about what am I going to do if this happens. I feel like if I take him in he will die, and if I don't he will he will anyway. So now what, I am so confused, he isn't in pain, he is eating and going to the bathroom, he has just melowed down, way down. What do I do, I just feel so helpless. Darned if I do, Darned if I dont.

Sorry to hear he is having such problems...but honestly he NEEDS a vet from the sounds of what you are describing. You really dont want to wait. If he is in pain he may wind up starting to self mutilate and that is the last thing you want. The only reason why I bring up the self mutilation is it is usually the rectal and penis area that causes a male to begin this. It is worth the risk of taking him to the vet. Please do so. Keep us updated please.

I know, and that is the plan. I know what I need to do, I know that I have to take him in. I just know that this is it for him, I feel it. I am just having really hard time, excepting that, and to know what just taking him in will do to him, is SOOOOOOOOOO hard. I just wish that there was a better way.

Is there any way that your vet could make a house call in this situation? My best friend had a dog that was the same way and the vet would make a house call for her. Good luck

Perhaps you could talk to your vet and get a mild dosage of valium to give him to calm his nerves before you take him to the vets office? This might make it possible for him to be seen and treated without the complications of the stress. Definately worth talking to the vet about.

first take him to a glider knowledgeable vet. what u can do before u take him in is get a samlple of his urine in a sterile container and his stool have a culture and sensitivity done on the urine and a direct fecal float with a cytology on his stool. that should tell alot of whats going on with him. if u need him sedated to remove the tumor later on. make sure the vet uses isoflurin anestesia. its the only safe one for gliders. also make sure hes done it before.

You don't know for sure that this is it. Something that comes up and is large just overnight most likely is NOT a tumor. There is a better chance that it may be some type of cyst or inflammation. The vet may be able to put him under and drain it and he will be fine. Also, he could be in pain without you knowing about it. Gliders hide illness and pain very well. Is he used to riding with you in a bonding pouch or in your shirt? If so, he doesn't have to know he's at the vet until the last possible minute. Then maybe the vet can just do the minimum that he has to and go from there. Good luck with your little guy. I really think going to the vet is his best chance of survival. If you don't, even if it's just something minor like a clogged gland or cyst, he could begin to SM and die from that.

I'm with Dancing, your vet saw the condition he was in before, so he/she would probably prescribe maybe torb(makes 'em sleepier) or Valium. You could slip it in some yogurt licky treat. He would be in and out before he knows it. GOOD LUCK!

I also agree with Teresa (Dancing). He needs to go in to have it checked and a small sedative would make things much easier on the both of you. Please call your vet and talk to them about it, explain how stressed he gets & see if they can give you something for him so they can see him and get it checked out.

I like Dancing's idea! We had a little girl that had a fast growing tumor. The vet told us that he could operate and remove it but wasn't sure he could get all of it and that she may not survive the operation. After giving it a lot of thought we decided to get pain meds and let her die at home. We kept her on the pain meds and showered her with love and attention. She went peacefully. I know your frustration and pain. It was one of the hardest things we ever had to do with a glider. Charlie H

Wow Brit, I am so sorry!!! I understand your frusteration with to go or not to go. I like the idea of a possible house call or sedatives. I hope he comes out ok!!
