Is there a standard rule of thumb on what color variations you can put together and what you can't?

How many different types of hets are there?

there are as many hets as there are colors! You can put any glider together, color or not. It just really depends on what you want to acheive

Het means... a glider can be one color and capable of producing a different color that is hidden visually.

Possible Het... a glider can be one color and may have the Possibility of producing a different color that is hidden visually.

We usually see the term Het when breeding Leucistics, Albinos or White Tips.

As to the Rule thing... So far, we do not put 2 Leucistics or 2 Albinos together to breed. Reason being... these two color variations... especially with the Albino, the gene pool is too small and is tightly bred.

When pairing a Lec Het with WF Blonde... one is trying to produce an offspring with the White Face Blonde coloration with the Possibility of the glider being a gene carrier for leucistic in future generations or the possibility of producing another color varriation. Example of the latter is... the Platinum Glider.

The above really depends on what the breeder is trying to achieve.

Yes you can breed any two gliders and produce joeys but that does not mean that they will produce a variation for you. You should note that a WFB or WF breeds like a dominant gene that means that you can place a WF or WFB with a non-gene carrier to produce a WF or WFB. There is some evidence that breeding WF or WFB into a leucistic produces a mosaic, though this process is not completely understood. Right now breeding of color variations is in its infancy. We cannot even agree on what is a color variation and what is not. Just because a breeder claims that they have a color variation because of a glider being slightly lighter or darker does not means it is or will be breedable. I recommend that you read up on genetics and heredity to get a basic understanding of gene transmission. It is never as simple as a Punnet Square. WFB is NOT a simple one gene recessive. There are breedings to show this. Therefore there are no such things as WFB hets, though they are advertised for sale here in the classifieds. Many people just take the theory of the Punnet Square and apply it to every color variation and this is wrong. There are many different influences that can cause a color variation; few are simple one-gene recessives. If you have specific questions about heredity I am sure that I or someone else can help to explain it. If you wanted a breeding program to combine multiple colors I would suggest that you use the WFB and another color like white tip, mosaic, or leucistic.

Thank you so much for your detailed post. Was written and explained in a way that is easily understood, direct and to the point. It has answered alot of my questions especially WF & WFB Het. I will PM you directly when I have another question.
