just wanted to share this

according to everything I have read here and elsewhere about HR669, we have nothing to fear about the animals WE ALREADY OWN. (I hope that is true) It would only prevent NEW animals from being obtained (legally) as well as more add more control the breeders/sellers. Any animals that dont have permits MAY be confiscated

I was concerned that if I didnt have permits for my gliders I would have no rights under a "grandfather clause" so I contacted the wildlife game commission for NJ. Yes you need to have a permit in NJ amd this will ensure that even if HR669 is passed I get to keep them. The permit to keep them as pets is $10 regardless of amount of gliders. the males and females must be kept separetly (if intact) and to breed is a different permit (dont know the cost).

NOW the important bit: this is being copied directly off my permit: (capitals by me)
*this permit is issued subject to INSPECTION of premises and may be revoked at any time for VIOLATION

*the public may NOT come into contact with the regulated species listed on permit

*all regulated species must remain caged when not in the residence of the permittee

so....you can not take your gliders out of the home unless caged (does this include zippered bonding pouches?) and I love this...THE PUBLIC MAY NOT COME INTO CONTACT WITH) I wonder if a vendor/breeder/seller has rights to allow the public to come into contact with them? Can anyone think of how this may affect some business that do that routinely??? I will be contacted the wildlife and game commission on that subject and will post my findings.

You typed wildlife permit. thay are not wildlife. I can see Public not coming into contact with the "wildlife" . fI do not beleive Gliders are in that catagory. Do you have it in black and white? If it is not written, I would not beleive it til I see it in writing. Period.

in NJ gliders are regulated as "wildlife". did I mention I called and asked them what type of permit do I need to keep sugar gliders.....I also typed everything right off the permit...
wildlife is any animal not raised for domestic purposes. any animal not native to the country.

this was just an FYI for you other New Jersyians. Not anything to start a debate. Just wanted to help

Wildlife is any animal that IS native. Something isn't right about that.

Here in Ky, we cannot keep squirrels, foxes, etc., without a wildlife permit for instance.

I get Sixth senses frequently, ( weirdo) but, we really need to keep everyone abreast of this. It is in the house now again? I imlpore you all to send the link out again and at least weekly to all your cantacts via E-mail.
And as far as Gliders being wildlife? they are breed non-wild, how can they be catagorized as wildlife? I really want to see the wildlife lists they are talking about. I'm thinking they are guessing.

I signed that bill tonight and stated nicely that would not stand behide that nor would I ever support it, I also made it clear howI thought it was unfairfor those that take the time needed to devote themselves to rehabelitating rescues and how I thought it unfair to punish those trying to help the amimals that people buy and are to lazy to do research on them before they purchase them and decide later on that their to much work, that they take up to much of their time, or they just don't want them any more and that it's theese people whom need to be punished not the ones trying to make a differeance by agreeing to take in an animal that someone bought and decided they no longer wanted them, such as sanctuarys and rescue homes. My sister in law also looked over what I typed out cause I wanted to make sure it didn't sound to harsh even though I was clearly angered and appaled at this, She told me not to worry to much about it because there was no way this bill would be passed because it's to strict and people like us that love our animals would never stand for a bill like this and she is pretty book smart considering she keeps books and files for people and files my taxes, and I don't see this bill getting passed with all the wonderfull people such as you guys here on GC.net who take a stand for your animals not to mention the many others that live in other states in this world. Im so glad that I signed the petition to not have this law passed, Im also very pleased with myself that I made a stand, somewhere deep in my heart im really happy about what I did and it has made me feel so good. My husband also agreed that theres no way this bill would be passed that it's again to strict and that all theese people whom own dogs and cats that are exotic wouldn't stand for it. gangel :gluck: :gidea:

Due to the tremendous support of pet owners from all over the country, HR 669 is currently being re-worked in an attempt to develop comprehensive legislation that effectively tackles the real problems caused by invasive species and at the same time, protects the rights of pet owners.

We will carefully watch the progress of HR 669 as it moves through Congress and if the help of the pet community is needed again, NOHR669.com will be here to help.

If we stick together, we can protect our rights.

* mods may place this in the correct area but just to let everyone know I did sign the petition and that is what I found tonight hopefully it's being re-worked for the better.
