Hi everyone, Tasha got this weird sore on her back about a week and a half ago. It was bleeding a bit, but mostly just shiny and wet looking. It looked like a deep hole and it was raw looking, almost as if the bone was showing. She didn't seem in pain, so I gave her some extra crickets, peanuts and protein foods to speed healing as advised by my vet when I called her to see if I should bring her in. After a few days I took her in to show the vet how this strange hole looked. It was in the back of her neck, and now it looks even bigger, but bright pink and completely closed, but the fur around the wound is loose. Is this part of the healing process, or should I be worried? The vet's not sure on what to do or give her. I don't have a choice in vets around here, there's only 1 who deals with sugar gliders. I have gone through Tasha and Sadie's entire cage and found nothing that could have hurt her or poked her. It was a hole the size of the end of my pinky, it went right to the bone, looked so sore. My vet's not too helpful, so does anyone know what I could possibly give her to speed up healing, or even what could have caused this? Tasha's about 6 years old, in case age has anything to do with it. Please if anyone has any advice better than the vet, Tasha and I would so appreciate it! Thank you so much.

In these photos Tasha's eating crickets to distract her from the camera. She's been active and seems her usual healthy self. Her ears are perky and she's not moving slowly or anything.

Being a biology major...all that i can assume is maybe there is a possibility of a fungus growing behind the neck. Perhaps ask your vet to scrape the area and test for a fungus or bacteria. If this cut is a circle...maybe its ringworm? Just a suggestion, because animals are known to be carriers. Hope this helps in taking the next step.

Looks like a mating wound to me, is Sadie a male by chance . You will probably have to seperate them till it heals completely up . If left together the other will keep grooming or chewing on the spot and it won't have a chance to heal up .

It appears to be a mating wound. She probably got her neck scratched and it was overgromed. My Angel had the exact injury and she is recovering well although she still has a rather large bald area on the back of her neck. You should definitely seperate the two or he will keep grooming the wound and it will never heal. Angel got her wound about 4 weeks ago and her mate will go for it every time ive allowed them to play. Ive also been using Q-tips with hydrogen peroxide to clean the wound as well as using a topical antibiotic to help the healing process and prevent infection.

I agree, it looks like a mating wound that has been picked at. Even if Sadie is a female, females will establish dominance by mounting submisive females and biting their neck, mimicing mating... You need to seperate her from her cage mate and keep a close eye on her neck. Don't put them back together until the wound is fully healed and furred.

[:"green"]This is sadly very true. My DaisyMae and her daughter, Mareki, were housed together for over a year without a male & DaisyMae had a wound that was almost identical to your glider's. A couple of months ago, I had to bring DaisyMae to the vet to have the wound debrided & sutured. Mareki continually picked at the wound and it would not heal on its own. I had to separate the two of them until the wound is completely healed... they are still separated and it has been over 2 months now since DaisyMae went to the vet's for this. Unfortunately, gliders will pick at wounds trying to "help" the other glider heal - but it has the opposite effect. Although DaisyMae's back looks completely healed now, the sutures have not dissolved yet, so they still can't be put back together yet. The vet had to use 90-day sutures because her first attempt to suture the wound with regular sutures failed - DaisyMae managed to scratch at the stitches with her hind foot & pulled them out.
Ask your vet to debride the wound & put in 90-day sutures. Also ask for SSD (Silvadine) topical ointment to put on the wound to assist with the healing process. Also, an oral antibiotic, such as SMZ-TMP, is in order to help prevent infection from taking root (or to get rid of infection that may already be present).
The attached picture is of DaisyMae's back after she picked out the original stitches...

I agree with everyone that is most likely a mating wound, but everyone...look real close at pic 6. That is an actual hole in the skin. However, it would be unlikely if it was something other than a mating wound to just show up overnight. (just talking outloud here, lol). Double look-see at pic 6 tho .

Thanks to all of you so much.
Karin, in pic #6 her skin is kinda folded because her head is up a bit. The hole is closed now and looks a healthy pink color. What worried me was the fur separating from the skin around the wound.
Thanx for adding your picture Suz, that confirmed for me what you all said it might be. Sadie is a girl, Tasha's daughter as a matter of fact. But Sadie's about a year and a half old now, so probably wanting to mate.
I will definitely separate them today. I'm so glad I posted late last nite here so I'd have answers in the morning.
Thank you once again Glider Central!

I have a rehome pair and have been trying to get the male not to chew on the female . He would chew right down to the bone . I finially got him neutered and tried them together again and he chewed again but not near as bad . It is surprising how quick they could do it and the one getting chewed on doesn't make a sound when it happens . Once she is healed up really good I will give him one more chance at being a good boy .

I too had a glider that had a mating wound that looked just like that. I seperated them right away and tood her to the vet. They had me clean it out with a solution 2 times a day and had an ointment forit. The problem was it healed from the outside but the inside had not healed. So the top skin was closed and hair was loose. When I took her and her mate into the glider room to see each other, thinking it was healed all he did was put his paw on the wound and blood came pouring out. So the vet had to suture it from inside and they were apart for a month or so but when she was totally healed I put them back and it never happened again.

Guess my point is to make sure it has healed from the inside out. I think you should take her back to the vet and make sure it is healing the right way. And she probably needs to be on some antibotics just in case.

But I do strongly suggest you let the vet see it and make sure it is healing right. As long as it is raw and not healed the male or daughter will try and groom it and make it worse.

Sadie's a girl. I've got the 2 ladies in one cage and the 3 boys in another cage to avoid any more 'accidental' breeding! That's how I ended up with 5 gliders! But the more, the merrier. The males all get along great, and so did the girls, until now. Had no idea this could even happen. I will definitely keep a closer eye on them once they get back together.

If you've already given him a few chances, maybe it would be worth thinking about not trying again if she's going to be getting chewed over and over, but that's just me....

They are so happy when they are together, it is hard to see them apart. She is 6yrs and he is 5 yrs , I'm thinking that maybe be a bad habit now . Maybe I will just do playtime to gether and see how it goes once she is healed . It could be that it is just taking longer for his hormones to died down . As he was neutered in Nov. I think I'm going to see if I can figure out her cycle as well . But for now anyways they are apart next to each other .

I agree with Ellen. Antibiotics should be given. When it was open, the chances are good some bacteria got in there. While it may or may not lead to an infection down the road, if it does you could end up with very little time once you know...the safest course with ANY open wound is to "shotgun" treat as a preventative measure with a broad spectrum antibiotic..like Baytril or Clavamox..to kill any foreign bacteria before it can become an infection that puts her life at risk.

And I also second that it very well could have been the other female. Separate them until it is COMPLETELY healed and new fur growing...otherwise she may keep trying to groom the wound for her cagemate and make it worse...keeping it from healing, or tearing it back open.

Wait and see with a glider with an open wound can be dangerous...I urge you to ask the vet for a 10-14 day course of antibiotic as a precaution. Because once an infection establishes itself, it can not only take much longer to treat, but before you know there's a real problem, it can be too late.

Keep us updated on your girl.

Thanx, I've got some antibiotics, and yes, they're separated. I will definitely not put them back together until it is completely healed. Will keep ya posted.

Just wondering if this is normal? Tasha's wound is now very wet looking and there must be a clear liquid coming out of it. It's not yellow or green though, I'm guessing it's healing well? Please let me know.

I wish I could help you on this one Paula, but I haven't had a glider with an open wound before. I'll PM Jen (Xfilefan) for you tho & ask her to take a look at your post. She has WAY WAY more experience with injuries that I have.

The wound has probably healed externally but not beneath the skin. Sometimes these wounds take 3 months or longer to completely heal. We had one female that looked completely healed so we put her back with her neutered cagemate and he tore the place open again. We isolated her and got her healed up again. This time we put her with a different cagemate thinking it could ba a behavioral problem with her former mate. Didn't work. The second cagemate tore the place open. Give the antibiotics and then keep her isolated for about 90 days at least. Seems the other gliders can sense something about the wound that makes them chew at it. We use the SSD mixed with vitamin E 1000 to apply to these wounds. It helps to restore tissue. The mixture keeps the wound moist and will not allow it to scab over too soon and leave a bad scar. It actually prolongs the healing but while it does the tissue is being restored to a point. Sort of hard to explain but the SSD is what is used on burn victims to help restore tissue.

Don't rush trying to put her in the cage with another glider. It could take several months for her to get back to normal.

[:"green"] When Daisy's back was healing, it did ooze a little bit, but not a lot. Since the discharge is clear, not green or yellow, it's probably fine, but a call to the vet to be 100% sure is a good idea.

Tasha's recuping well. Although I freaked out when I found a huge chunk of skin and fur about 3" in diameter in her food dish!!
Eventually common sense told me it was the scab from the wound. So much of her beautiful fur was attached to it though, it was very disturbing to see. She's got a huge bare patch now, she's on antibiotics, and hopefully in a week or so it'll be healing nicely. The wound looks healthy, the vet said she'd be fine! YAY for TASHA!

SO glad to hear Tasha is doing well, I just went through this with Sage about a month ago myself – ran out and got a second cage to separate them, then the vet visit, the meds and all – so I know what you have been through, and this was the Second time Mango had done this, the first vet did not think it was that big of a deal, luckily the first time it healed on its own, after the second time,,, well now that she is all healed up and can go back in with the other two… let just say that Mango is not goin got have a chance to get his paws on her again… well not till after his neutering….lol…
