Daisy is a 1 1/2 years old glider that weighs 96g, and according to the vet seems healthy, except for the fact that I've been finding her with her pouch inverted. The first time it happened was mid January and the vet said to leave it alone for a while in hopes of it going back in itself. That wasn't the case, after 2 weeks with little progress the vet researched this problem and found only one documented case on it. So he suggested to poke the pouch back in and stitch the pouch closed, I would then have to seperate her from her sister/cage partner for about 2-4 weeks maybe more. Also by stitching the pouch closed, it ran the risk of her attempting to pull it out which could cause even more damage to her pouch. Reluctant to try this I decided to just have the pouch poked back in but not stitching it. Now I'm back to step one, last night I found her pouch bubbled out again. I don't know why it keeps coming out! Is it a freak accident? Is she pulling it out for a reason? Or is her cage partner doing it out of spite? Regardless, WHAT SHOULD I DO? I don't want it stitched closed because if the pouch came out a second time, then the chances of her bothering the stitch are high. And vet visits ever week aren't cheap. Any suggestions other than the one I got from the vet? I'm desperate.

It sounds like her pouch may be infected. Did your vet swab it or check for infection of any kind? A friend of mine had a glider who's pouch bubbled out & they ended up putting her on antibiotics for it.

The first visit he didn't test for infections but put her on antibiotics just in case there was an infection, but the bubble still didn't go away after a week. I then took her back the next week and that was when he had tucked it in. He did test for an infection and found small amounts of bacteria which he said should go away with the medication. I only continued giving her the medication for as long as the vet suggested. The bubble re-appeared last night, about two weeks after she finished her antibiotic time period.

If it was an oral antibiotic and a yeast based infection the oral medication wouldn't help anyway. You'd have to clean the infection out by hand.

I have had this happen. I had a female that ended up with an infected nipple when she lost a joey and then somehow the pouch got infected. She need antibodics and her pouch cleaned daily which is a job.

I just discovered about 4 days ago that my female's pouch is inverted...or at least that's what I think it is (had someone suggest that there's a similarity to an infected mammary gland). I called the nearest vet which is just over an hour's drive away and was told that they've worked with thousands of gliders and they've never heard of this before. I was advised to coat the tip of a cotton swab with vaseline and try to push it back in. But because these people have never experienced this I'm not sure what I should do. If I took her in to see this vet...same thing: no experience. I don't even know of any other vets nearby that would be able to help. I can only hope that if I can successfully get the pouch tucked back in (if I even have the nerve to try it) that the problem will be solved.

I'm sure that if you called that vet back up, and asked them if they would be willing to do a vet consult, they would. Here is a great vet to do a consult with, Dr Debra Thomas. 757 481 2800 She does tons with GLiders.
