My story goes like this. My father-in-law were given two adult sugies by his friends about 20mths back. We didn't know much about them but fell in love with them immediately. We read through as many web sites as we could and feed them whatever was recommended. We must have been feeding them quite well cos several months later they gave birth to two wonderful babies which we named Tingles(Male) and Bubbles(Female).

As we were inexperienced, my father-in-law removed them abit too early (7-8weeks) and now even though they are adults, they are only about 1/2 the size of regular sugies which could bcos they are really picky with the choice food (apples, pears, mangoes, sometimes papaya dependin on their mood, sunflower seeds, live millworms and crickets).

Then one day, we noticed that Bubbles is not moving very well and seemed to have hind leg paralysis and so we started them one calcium supplements everyday. Things didnt quite get worst until she fell and broke her right front leg. From then on things started to go down hill for both tingles and bubbles. Since I am not working my father-in-law suggestted i adopt them so I can have more time to monitor they progress. That was abt 4mths back. During this period i noticed that they were so weak that they cant even break through the shells of sunflower seeds!!...It really broke my heart to see them so fragile, helpless and weak.

Tinkle then started very bad diarrhea 1mth back and soon Bubbles was suffering it too. I brought them to the largest most sophisticated vet in town unfortunately unlike in other parts of the world where u can find vet specialises in wildlife and exotic animals, local vets here are only good for dogs and cats. He had no idea what was wrong with them and prescribed them antibotics for 10 days. The antibotics didnt work and he then suggested to get them injections for 3 days in a row with a different course of antibotics.

That was last monday. Their condition didnt improve and I just couldn't bare to see them goin through any of the injections or other tests since the vet was frank about his knowlegde about them. My worst fear came when Bubbles's appetite changed on Sat. She was really lethargic and her body temperature was cold. We managed to keep her warm and comfortable on saturday's night and she seems alot better yesterday's morning. She was excited and curious about what's going on and wanted to be cuddled all the time. By 3pm yesterday, after having 2 seizures and emptied her stomach (vomitted) she passed away in her sleep. I cried my heart out and i feared the other one, Tingles, cos I really dont know what I could have done different or better if they are not eating. Throughout the wholenight, I heard him calling out for her and wondered around the cage searching for her. Please help me, tingle is not taking it too well and he also looked depressed and stopped eating. Just as I am writing this he had a mini seizure and vomitted. I am afraid i will lose all my babies in 2days ...

It sounds like what Jax did, and it may be too late as much as aI know you hate to hear this. Look up a vet online and take your little guy there ASAP. Even if its a four hour drive try. I made that mistake with Jax because I wasn't sure if he'd make a long road trip, but instead he died because of the lack of knowlage.

I am so sorry you are having to go through this, i can see that you love your babies and want the best for them. I am so sorry for your loss and I hope you are able to save your little boy. I would reccomend to try to find a vet that specializes in exotics but from your post I am not sure that is fesible. I know someone will be on here soon to help you and guide you in the right direction. Good Luck and my prayers are with you.

I see that you are in Malaysia... That makes going to a gilder knowledgeable vet a little complicated, unfortunately

A few things I noticed that you might want to try is changing their diets. Gliders should have fruits, vegetables, and protein, along with a vitamin and calcium supplement. There are several proven diets out there, but I don't know how available the ingredients are in Malaysia. I personally would try a fresh food diet. Which consist of a variety of different fruits and vegetables, meat (chicken, turkey, or insects), and vitamins sprinkled over top. Reptile vitamin supplements work well

Good luck. I'm praying for you and your little one.

Thanks for all your condolences and well wishes. Yes I am in msia and I am angry for the fact that people are mass breeding them and there's no one who can help when they are sick. I tried every types of foods in the local market and his never show any other interests...he doesnt even eat chicken, eggs or yogurt. We bought 'Quiko' Sugar glider food (from the US) and he didnt eat take a bite. I am really puzzle as of what else I can do. I also notice he is grinding his teeth cos they are quite long like I mentioned he doesnt even have the strenght to bite through shell sunflower seeds...sigh...I tried buying sugarcane to help him file his teeth but as usual he is not keen.

Leyna had good suggestions and if you can't get the vitamins and calcium there let me know. I will be glad to ship you some.

If you have nectar, gliderade, pedylte(SP) this would realy help if he's not eating. Have you tried handfeeding mealworms?

Please let us know if we can help or if I can ship you something he might eat.

Thanks glidermon102 for your offer but our babies are really picky eaters. We have wide range of fresh fruits and vegetables, and even live insects can be readily bought over the counter, its just that he refuses to try them...i am really anxious as all I can only rely on the forum for medical advices. Yes, once in awhile he will eat mealworms but not a big fan though. my baby girl (Bubbles) ate more than he does.

Thier teeth are not suppose to be grinded down because they do not grow back. I believe this is accurate info that I have read on here. Just wanted to let you know...someone will correct me if I am wrong. Good Luck.

You're right, a gliders teeth do not need to be floated or grinded down, they are not like a rodents teeth which keep growing & if you cut them back it will cause the glider to have difficulty eating.

To get some food into them, try mashing up their bugs and mixing with some applesauce or fruit juice. If your babies are so weak that they cannot eat on their own, they make accept "lickey treats" from your fingers. It's important that they get the calcium they need. As other people mentioned, there are lots of great supplements that you can order from the US. (Refer to my site...you'll find lots of useful links about diet. My favorite is from ThePetGlider.) In the mean time, for calcium, you can try feeding plain yogurt and/or scramble eggs and mash the shell to super tiny fine bits. (really, really small size). You can try feeding this to your babies for protein and calcium.

You and your "children" are in my prayers. Again, please look at my web site. I've taken lots of time to include all sorts of useful links about glider care, including nutrition.

Best,
Jennifer

In order to get him healthy again, trying things that he once did not like might be the option to take. he needs to consume his daily requirements of vitamins, calcium. and protien to stay healthy. I know that it may seem as if he doesn't want to eat these things but maybe if you make it into pureed food, he might enjoy it better. I really do hope that he gets to feeling better and that our information here at this board helpd you. This is a great board to turn to when you are having questions

Thanks Jennifer, I will try the mashed bugs with fruit juices for a start and hope that he will be enticed to it. My husband and I cant show enough gratitude for all the kindness and advices given in the last hour since we started this thread. It has definitely helped me knowing that I am not left alone esp in msia to deal with my lost and an opportunity to make things different for Tingles. Thanks for all the prayers and really hope that he will be better as he has now fallen asleep on my husband's belly. I hope he will be given a chance to recover and enjoy his life like a true SG should. I will update you on his progress soon....

Many thanks, Karen

Sad to say baby food (gerbers) he has shown no interest. However, i will continue to try other brands and favours. That's why I am so helpless, i tried just about everything, he is just not interested. I will oso experiment my own blend mix to see how as I do understand they need quite a wide range of food to stay healthy.

gliders need 50 percent protein and 50 percent fruits and veggies calcium and vitamins. mine like apples melons mixed veggies carrots sweet potatoe try turkey ground up yogurt daily is good for calcium a tsp daily. look on the internet for calcium supplement and a vitamin supplement. only a pinch of both these. in australian they use wombaroo high protein supplement if u punch in wombaroo it will take u to that website and u can order it it has all the vitamins and protein in it. they need.

Great idea gogogliders! Even my pickiest eaters like the ensure! It may be called sustugen (sp?) over there. My guys prefer the strawberry flavor, but will drink the vanilla & butter pecan. Just DO NOT get the chocolate as chocolate is toxic for gliders.

Since your vet has already given the glider antibiotics you should also have him give Flagyl for seven days. It will clean the gliders system of parasites especially giardia. Check for dehydration by pulling up the skin on the nape of the gliders neck. When you tent it if it stays up or gows down slowly the glider is dehydrated. If it quickly goes back down the glider is probably not dehydrated. Give him straight Pedilyte if he is dehydrated. The Ensure is a good choice at this time since he will not take solid food. Mix 3/8 of a teaspoon of calcium to a bottle of vanilla plain Ensure. Hand feed it to him with an eyedropper. Also give him the pedilyte or water with the eyedropper. Do this three or four times a day. At first he will probably not take it very well but he will learn. Gently push the eyedropper tip into the side of his mouth. Squirt a little into his mouth. Give him time to swallow and catch his breath and repeat.

Go to the diet link at the top of the page and pick one of the diets and try to find the ingredients to get him started on eating it. Stop giving nuts and seeds. These are not good choices for a glider. And as mentioned do not float his teeth. About the only time you mess with a gliders teeth is when they have an oral infection and then maybe one may have to be pulled. Good luck with your little ones. sounds like all of your gliders problems are the result of improper nutrition.

[:"green"]Your glider, unfortunately, has pretty classic symptoms of advanced Hind Leg Paralysis. You need to find out from your vet if you can get Neocalglucon - it is a liquid calcium supplement that you can use for getting his little system back in balance. Unfortunately, the powdered calcium supplements won't really help a whole lot at this stage. You also need to switch diets, trying what CharlieH suggested in the meantime until he gets healthy again, then switching to a better diet. Although he has been picky about what he will eat in the past, you can probably get him to change to better foods in time (not always feasible, I know, but worth a try, anyway). Unfortunately, the lack of ability to open the sunflower seeds is because his jaw bones are getting too soft & losing strength. My first two gliders died within 2 weeks of eachother from HLP that was misdiagnosed & treated wrong by the vet I had at the time. They, too, had been on an improper diet (when I got them). I tried & tried to change them to a proper diet to no avail.
I'm so sorry you are going through all of this & especially for the loss of Bubbles. I know you really loved her a lot...

Ensure saved my gliders life!!
I mixed it with medicam (1cc) and liquid calcium I bought from the pharmacy. the medicam is a painkiller (1cc is what my vet prescribed to me and she is a glider vet) also, mix in some electrolyes. some examples are the batril, glideraid etc
feed every couple of hours and feed insects from the pet store. Wax worms are high in fat and would probably do well with your fuzzie.
I really wish you all the best
