My husband and I are looking for his first full-time job and one of our choices could be florida. Now the cage requirement is 4x4x4 is that right? But then can you compensate for some of those measurements by increasing others? I thought I had read that some where. Like we have a 260 rept. 6ftx 2.5ftx 2.5 ft. Will that work or do we need to get a larger one if we moved there? And..in another post i read that the importation is banned now is that true?? Or does it mean imported from Australia, not someone moving there who already has one?

I belioeve that ypou can move to a legal state with a glider.
Florida is legal.
I also believe that you're fine with cage requirements since you have the large rep.
How many gliders are in there? The size per glider is the issue, but no one will hold you to the ShapE of the cage.
Hope that elps.
bendiciones y besos dorados,
yeye

FL cage size is 4'x4'x4' high for 2 gliders. That's a 16 sqft floor area. For each additional glider, you increase the floor size by 25% of the original floor size, or you add 4 sqft for each additonal glider. A cage for 3 gliders would be 4'x5'x4' high. 4'x5'= 20 sqft (16+4=20) You can find this information on the Florida Fish and Wildlife Game Commission. I use a 260 reptarium, but I don't know if it is "technically acceptable" under their guidelines, because I don't know about moving numbers around to make different dimensions. Either way, it's not like you'll just have an inspector pop in on you to check.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife will not come and inspect cages. Especially for people with pet gliders. I have all of my gliders in 30*18*36 cages. I am also licenced by the Florida Fish and Wildlife. So is Lisa at Suncoast and she uses the 32*22*36 cages for hers. They will not come and inspects cages unless there are a lot of complaints. Have no worries. As long as you do not put them in hamster cages your gliders will be fine.

Billy are you saying that you and Lisa are breaking the law? NO wWAY. My USDA inspector in FL measured my cages and said I was in the state requirements. I guess it depends on who you get. She said then she hated to see the small cages too. Also if Fl. Fish and Wildlife have a set size there is a reason for it why don't they check? Pets are no different than breeders they should get the same respect and have the same requirements. Sad world out there. Put the gliders first and not the money. I think they only want the $50.00 a year fee huhh.

Yes that is all that they want their 50.00. They have said its just a guideline and they have never had to enforce it. I am licensed and so is Lisa. I mean when you consider that a lemur has the same cage size as a small sugar glider there is something way wrong there. I think my cages are fairly large. Plus being that I have a small colony I can take them out to play every day. I believe the law seriously has to be revised. I mean a 30x18x36 inch cage is not small at all for two gliders. My USDA inspector was happy with the cages my gliders were in and how they were set up. This is just what I have noticed. If they were really wanting to have a cage law in place the cage size in my opinion should be smaller than what it is just not to small. I mean they hand out licenses like water as long as they get their 50.00. I mean my gliders are in bigger cages then a lot of other breeders use so I think my gliders have always come first, I just think that the state has to see that now.

I hope my comment about pets being different offend anyone. They aren't at all since my breeders are my pets. You can ask anyone that has seen my gliders first hand and been to my home. Its just difffernt on the fact since they do not have to be licensed since they are pet owners and not breeders they do not have to worry.

Well I agree with you. I think the law of 4'x4'x4' is way to big to be manditory. My two gliders are in a 30x20x36 and that is pleanty big I think. One day I will get a bigger cage I am sure but that will have to wait when I am not living in an apt and am able to clean it outside. I think we start to forget how big something is when we get use to it. Kind of like when you got your first place you probably thought it was huge, then a year later it was to small. The size didn't change you just wanted something new or "better" <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I spoke to linda harrison who works for florida fish and wildlife and she told me that the 4x4x4 requirement is a standard cage size that they decided fit the bill. The SAME size is required for monkees, racoons, and even anteaters!!

So even thought the bigger cage you have, the more comfortable your suggies are, I would go with whatever you can fit! (mine are 3' x 2 1/2' x 4')

I had no idea there were even cage requirements in Fl. Im getting a joey from Billy and all of his gliders seem perfectly fine and happy and healthy in they cages they are in. Im not sure on the length and width, but my cage height is 4' and its on top of a stand, so im sure they have enough height. i think my length and width are only like 2'x2'. is that a problem even with all that heigth? :\ if so I'll definitely find a different one!

thanks for the help. (keep in mind im only getting one glider so i think thats plenty of room. and ill play with him everyday of course!)

I didn't know this either! But mine are in cages larger than that, so I'm not worried. Plus I don't breed them.
