foods that would give a person gas,will also do the same for the gliders.i feed some of those once in awhile,because of that.corn should only be given as a treat,if you aren't feeding the bml diet.

On the SPIN diet PAGE, it lists lima beans as being safe for gliders. I thought those were bad for gliders?

Cooked lima beans are fine.. again like John said moderation.

What about grapes and raisins? and granola bars

I would avoid granola bars with higher salt or sugar content. Grapes and raisins are an absolute no no. They have been known to cause acute kidney failure in dogs, birds, etc. They can contain a mycotoxin which is a fungal toxin and it would be fatal to a Glider. I had a friend whom I was very familiar with on a bird forum and they fed grapes as a morning treat to their flock of birds and within a few hours she had lost her entire flock. The necropsies determined it was from mycotoxin poisoning from the grapes.

Yes, Grapes and Raisens have caused death in dogs and possibly birds but I have been feeding grapes and raisens to my gliders for over 11 years now. As a rescuer, I've had several hundred gliders through my home with my current count (of personal gliders) being at 34. I'm sorry but I have NEVER heard of or seen any direct evidence that grapes or raisens causes any threat to gliders.

The mycotoxin has not been found in EVERY grape, it is simply a risk that it does contain it and there is plenty of scientific and medical evidence to support the claim that grapes are dangerous. I have seen first hand what they can do if they do contain the fungus and I certainly would not want to play russian roullette with my Gliders just because it isn't a common occurance. Just because it hasn't happened to you does NOT mean that it couldn't. Here are some websites that give more information about it.

Grapes are controversial...some say yes, some say no. After reading those articles I don't see any more risk in feeding them than any other food from the grocery. Fact is none of us grow all our own food and it comes into contact with many different processes and shipping and could be contaminated at any point in time, even things that come out of sealed packages. Otherwise there wouldn't be food recalls.

Everything we do with our gliders is a calculated risk, be it diet, housing, interaction, where we take them with us. We try our best but no one and nothing is bulletproof.

Not trying to be a smartie pants, but why are they ok in humans but not animals? just wondering? I guess we can process it better?!

Megan, my best guess is that we can simply handle it better but the lady who lost her flock of birds to this problem also had to take her daughter to the hospital with the same symptoms. She was diagnosed with the same thing as the birds were but she was not nearly as deathly ill. Her symptoms were not nearly as bad and she made a full recovery. That is just one instance though and I have no articles or scientific data to back that up as a general claim. I think Lovely1inred is absolutely right, there are risks in everything and we simply have to calculate how to take the lowest risks possible. Grapes are definitely not a toxic food in and of itself and the risks of them are fairly minimal. It is something that everyone should be aware of but it is a personal choice to feed them or not. I will not use grapes at all because of my personal experiences and the rising evidence against them but I retract my previous statement that they are "an absolute no no". I will never feed them myself but they are a personal choice and as long as you are educated as to the risks you can decide for yourself how to best proceed.

btw- I wouldn't feed greens to a glider except as a very rare treat- they are high in iron which prevents calcium absorption and increases vit C absorption..

True however... there is not that much in greens to worry IMO.. Many of the Zoos and vets in Australia are now recommending a much larger portion of green veggies.

But again.. it would also depend on what you are already feeding.. BML is high already in iron.. I would not recommend feeding high end greens with that diet.. But you can with others.

grapes ok as a treat but not a main dish raisns i wouldnt do because gliders suck the juice out of foods and a raisin is a dehydrated grape...no juice so id say no and my gliders love grapes and are doing fine on them also my dogs eat them too just throwing that out there. one last note for me it was hard to keep buying veggies and hoping they stay fresh long enough for my gliders to eat so i buy baby food veggies cuz all it is ,is water and the veggie ground up. plus it helps know what is and wont be safe.

Ya know somthing odd happen tonight i was watching tv tv was and was fixing to turn the channel whe I discovered that the topic was mycotoxins hearing Eden mentioning this in grapes I decided to listen they were talking about one in general that kills animals by rupturing the veins in the heart and there for causing them to bleed. In other words this caused the animals infected to hemorage internally and die, even babies have died with this mycotoxen.it's type of mold and all it has to do is break off even a tiny bit and it can grow on other things, or cary a scent that is deadly.. thing is if it's in your house there are vertin triggers that can set it off like cigerettes can set it off from what I understand and it was found it horses grain. Thank you for your insight on that Eden I will never feed my gliders grapes!!

You are very welcome. As I said before, it is just a risk that everyone has to decide for themselves if they are willing to take and if somebody wants to feed grapes then that is perfectly fine, they should just be aware of the risks involved. I myself feel that it is a risk I am not willing to take because if they were to be fed grapes with that toxin there is no chance of surviving it so there is nothing I could do to save them. I personally feel there are so many great food choices out there and different fruits and veggies that are safer and healthier so there is no reason to take such a risk. I also don't like how high grapes are in natural sugars but that is just a personal choice. As has been said though, nothing is totally safe, every fruit and veggie has some level of pesticide or pollutant content, its just a matter of weighing the potential risks. But pesticides and pollutant content will build up in the body over time while the toxins in grapes will be fatal immediately, that is why I feel it is a greater risk. That is just my own opinion though.

Im told only GLOBE grapes are bad. Gliders have evolved enough to know not the eat the skins which are toxic. However there is something in GLOBE grapes that can kill them. Im told normal seedless red and green grapes are fine, just not the Huge purple ones. I give mine one every other day as a treat. Its neat to watch them peel away the skin.
