I know this sounds like a stupid question. But I have had my gliders for over a month, I can pet them in their cage (sometimes, not always) They climb all over me in the tent. They dont crab when I carry them in their pouch (they do if I open it to look in at them!!) But I am no way able to just Hold them, or let they out at night with out the tent.

What do bonded gliders act like? Can you just 'Hold' them. Like sit on the couch with an awake glider? Not a comatose sleeping one. I just want realistic goals and know what the final outcome will be like. (be my shinning light at the end of my long tunnel!!!) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Gliders are free spirits really. They don't like to be confined to anything, let alone your hands, so holding a wide awake glider for more then perhaps a minute or two is being unrealistic just because its against their nature. I don't really know how to describe what they are like, only that it feels different. I had a very VERY close bond with Jax. He was everything to me and can never be replaced, but I do hope someday to have that same bond with Gaz and hopefuly Cubby someday, but he's just not that kind of glider hehe. Jax wanted to be with me, and was upset when I ahd to leave him home. The moment he came home I knew he was mine and I was his. It was instant and its a very rare and specail thing. Its not so much behavior as you feel something more then just love for them. I have lost family, but losing Jax sent me into weeks of sobbing and nightmares about him. Its like losing a child or a husband almost, or in my opinion atleast. I was devistated and it took me a while to decide I wanted more, and even longer to find the gliders that felt right. You'll know...You'll just know, and its so very specail.

To me this is a bonded glider...Now granted every glider has a different personality, but after having Cerulean, I will be VERY choosy when/if I get another glider on who the breeder is because I expect a lot now.

When I first got Peepers, she was so sweet, I had a hard time telling when she was bonded. I mean right away I could hold her and pet her and she slept in my shirt the second day...

But now that I've had her a year and a half, it just feels different. She's anxious to climb all over me when I come to the cage and let her out, and she comes to "check in" with me when she's loose running around the room. She's more affectionate when awake in that she seems to enjoy when I cup her in my hand a moment for a snuggle or pet her or give her a little scratch under the chin.

I agree with CaptivatedK that most of them don't get to where you can just hold and pet them when they're wide awake. I don't take them in the living room with me to watch TV because I have a recliner and a couple of other things in there (like the fireplace) that I'm afraid for them to get into. We have playtime in the glider room (formerly known as the guest room).

When I've taken her to glider events like the SGGA in July or the SGR last weekend, in an unfamiliar place like a hotel room I can let her be awake on me and she'll pretty much stay with me, but if I sit down on a chair or the bed, she'd get off of me. Sometimes she'll be content to stay in my bra even if she's awake as long as she's not TOO awake. At the SGR, I got her out of the cage when she was awake and she was crawling around my head and shoulders when I took her to Anita's room, then she went in my shirt and just hung out and I was able to sit down to visit with everyone in the room and pet her in my shirt.

I think what's bonded for gliders is different from one to the next...for some gliders, being bonded with them means they give you kisses or take treats or let you pet them without nipping....some gliders aren't as openly affectionate as others, and I think alot of new owners take it personal when they're gliders aren't constantly showering them with affection, when in fact, it's not the owners fault at all...the owner could be doing everything right, and it just isn't in that glider;s personality to do the cuddle thing....for Gizmo and I, some of the specific things that told me we were bonded were:

- he'd much rather sleep under my shirt right across my heart than sleep in his pouch when we're on the couch together...if I have him in his bonding pouch, he'll crawl out of it, climb under my shirt and curl up right over my heart....*sigh*....
- if I have to examine him or do one of my own "wellness checks" just to make sure he's looking healthy, he lets me manhandle him lol without biting once
- when something startles him, it's ME he jumps to, not his pouch
- KISSES KISSES KISSES!...he grooms me like he's getting paid for it....but see, shining example, some gliders just never get into "grooming" their owners, but that doesn't mean that they're any less bonded....

I dunno, I think alot of it depends on what your gut is telling you about where you are in the bonding process and how well you can read your glider's personality....I may have confused you more, sorry!!!!!

When I got Boo she was the only glider that I had...We bonded rather fast....She would always licks, snuggles and loves on me, at night when she got finished playing, she would come on the bed and get under the covers beside of me, and pull at the sheet, as if saying I am ready for bed...She wanted to sleep with me and be with me at all times, when I would go out of the room she would jump on me as if to say "not going without me"....That all changed when I started feeling guilty about her not having another companion...Then I got Boo....He is a hyperactive, mischeivios, little guy, would rather bite you than cuddle...And Boo, Well now, I just get an occasional lick, and very rarely a snuggle...Bailey is her main objective....Me personally, I think that it is easier to bond with one than two or more...Bailey still hasn't bonded all that well...He climbs on me, bites me(playing) but it does hurt alot...He will come around me as long as I keep my hands off and let him have the run of the house.

I agree, I think all bonded gliders are different.
With Xander, we bonded extremely fast and the bond is just getting stronger. He will stay on me, bark when he hears my voice from another room but can't see me, rub his head all over my face when he gets the chance, and abandon even the juciest apple slice or mealie to be with me.
Karma on the other hand, is also bonded to me. (Though this bond took longer.) She will stay on me until something/someone more interesting comes along. She will gobble up the mealworm before coming over to me, and lick me raw. (Which Xander does as well.)
It was kind of hard to tell when Karma and I were bonded. I only understood it when she and Xander were out in my room and one of my dogs somehow gt in and barked at her, she jumped to me and into my shirt, when her cage was right there to get into as well. (I like to think she didn't just misjudge the distance when trying to get to the cage, lol.)
It really is just a feeling you get, and how they look at you, you know you are more then just their food bringer from then-on.

It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.

The aim of education should be to teach us how to think rather than what to think.

The difference in involvement and commitment is like a ham omelet. The chicken was involved. The pig was committed.
