Oh little Giz is doing fabulous smile , every second night or so he won't eat so great frown but his weight stays on 72 grams now.

I am working on the site, slowly but surely. As soon as I have something to show again, you will be the first to know.

Gizmo is really doing well. He still shows some staining after this episode. In the past week he went down to 70 grams.

Is there anything that we can add to his diet that will allow him to add some weight but will not cause any staining? We need to get his weight up while keeping him the healthy boy he is at the moment. He is on the HPW diet.

I'm glad to hear that he is still doing well. I'm sure once he starts to regain his full health and feels like grooming, the staining should start to disappear.

If you have some avocado, you can mix (mash it up) in with a little boiled chicken breast. This usually helps put some weight on. You can give him about a tsp. every other day as a snack. Just make sure that you don't give it to him too close to his main meal time.

Not at all. Fattening, yes. Which is why it's a good food for when a glider is sick, losing weight or isn't gaining weight.

copied off another site:

[edit] Toxicity to animals
There is documented evidence that animals such as cats, dogs, cattle, goats, rabbits, rats, birds, fish and horses[15][25] can be severely harmed or even killed when they consume the avocado leaves, bark, skin, or pit. The avocado fruit is poisonous to some birds, and the ASPCA and many other sites list it as toxic to many animals including cats, dogs, and horses[26]. Avocado is an ingredient in AvoDerm dog food[27] and cat food.[28] However, the ASPCA has declined to say whether this food is safe or not without knowing the details of how the avocado is processed.[29]

this seems to be like the grape dilema. is it toxic or not? if so, perhaps only in large doses. what happens with small doses over time? does the toxic compounds build up in the body? if the fruit is toxic to birds, what about other animals? I have seen sites that say safe and others say not safe for avacado and other foods.

I am not giving an opinion either way, just want the info there for all to see and decide for themselves.

Maybe if there are different options to get Giz to gain weight, I don't want to take any chances. His immune system is still on the low side. I hope for some more options, at the moment I am giving him some extra yoghurt after his meals.

I agree with what Gizmogirl said above. We gave Gizzie some avo a while back and just after that he became sick. We are therefor very reluctant to give him avo again. Even though we are not 100% sure it was in fact the avo that caused his illness. We are open to other suggestions to try to get him to add some weight.

When Paganini was so ill (we weren't aware of the cancer until a couple of days later), a very knowledgeable and wonderful ER vet near me suggested maybe trying a little Oxbow Carnivore Care , which can only be obtained in the US through a vet's office. I never did try it, because he declined so rapidly.

I wonder if that might be an option for Gizmo? I really don't know anything about this stuff, except that this vet spoke highly of it, and thought it might be a good option for supplementing Pag's nutrition.

I dont use it but I do have a couple packages at my store. The only thing I would have to consider is it is Carnivore Care, mainly for carnivores...gliders are omnivores. I would be concerned about too much protein?? dunno

I just need to get his weight up a bit. And my hubby does not trust avocado. He loves the HPW and I thought this would help with the weight but he seems to stay on 70gr. Maybe he is just a tiny little guy, and maybe I should just accept it. I just want to give him some reserves you know.

That was my original thought, too. However, this vet told me that they have even used it with convalescing turtles! dunno She was very knowledgeable about gliders. I think she was suggesting it more of a supplement than an entire source of nutrition, sort of the way sick humans sometimes use Ensure?

Mind you, I've never had to use Ensure for myself...I have enough fat of the land reserves to live off of for quite awhile...I am famine resistant! roflmao

When I was working at the exotic vet here, we used both the Carnivore care and the herbivore one as well. We used the the carnivore one for ferrets, and all manner of carnivorous reptiles, Unfortunately, not too many gliders around here and never had any brought in sick so didn't use it for them. The herbivore one we used on herbivorous reptiles, rabbits, and G pigs. Both were good for hospitalized patients.

Gizmo is still not eating all his food. Other than that he is a very hyper-active glider that plays, wheels, etc.

We took Gizmo to the local vet today as his vet is 300kms away from where we stay. Last night he had two very slimy poo's and we were (are) concerned about it. The vet did a fecal test and found absolutely nothing out of the ordinary. She prescribed Flagyl 2x per day for five days and we will start with this treatment tonight. He ate his pieces of fruit last night but did not touch his HPW mix.

This vet did mention that mucus in the poo normally points to a colon related illness or parasite, however, since Gizzie's illness started, he had been for 4 fecal culture tests that did not show anything.

Just an update on little Giz. He is eating a bit better and he will finish his anti biotics tonight. He lost 2 grams and is on 68grams now.

He seems pretty healthy, but I just can't seem to get his weight up.

I'm glad to hear that his appetite has picked up!
If Gizmo is a naturally small bonded glider, one thing to keep in mind is that they usually do not gain the weight as larger boned ones do.
I would say to keep him on the diet as close to what you already have, while adding a few extra treats during the day will help. It can take at least 3-6 months to have a stabilized weight after they have been ill and or on medications.
Thank you for the update!
Still keeping Gizmo in my prayers! hug2

Gizmo is naturally small boned. I guess that I got such a fright with this illness that I wanted him to build up some reserves. It is comforting to know that other small boned gliders do not really gain weight. And I guess with Giz being hyper, it does not help either. And also it is since we got our rescue Boesman that I noticed Giz was really tiny. Here is a pic of Giz on the left(one and a half years and weighs 68grams) and Boesman on the right(9 months old and 108 grams).

I can see a noticeable difference just in the sizes of their heads.
My two gliders are about 2 weeks apart in age, and Sam weighs 20 grams more than Choco. Sam's build is larger, whereas, Choco is more on the smaller size.
As long as Giz is NOT loosing and can gain at least 1 gram a week, for the next year, than you really shouldn't have to worry.
