Is it okay to feed a glider citrus fruit? Will they even eat it? My husband brought home some Clementines and wanted to give a piece to my suggies, but I wouldn't let him because I've never read of anyone feeding that to them. I tried searching the forums but nothing came up. Any advice would be welcome. Thanx!

I read that a little taste was okay but they are too acidic.
Not positive though.
I wouldn't do it myself.

Because of the acid in citrus fruits, feeding to much can cause loose stools. The fruit itself is fine but only in moderation. My gliders love oranges but only a small peice here and there. Citrus is good if you have a constipated glider, it can help loosen things up a bit for them.

the last time i tried feeding a piece of mandarin orange to my sugies they tossed it into the water dish. Home made orange juice? I don't know. But I think they are telling me they don't like them.

Just wait until they are over 6 months OOP..younger than that it can cause intestinal upset and diarrhea that can be damaging. Over 6 mos..a small amount as an occasional treat, or to treat constipation. Citrus includes oranges, grapefruits, tangerines, tangelos, kiwi (contains citric acid), pummelos and starfruit. Lemons and limes are way too acidic, and I'd avoid them entirely. (I think I got all of them).

Edited to add...and pineapple. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I gave Badger a tiny piece of orange last spring and he got the runs BAD. I won't give any of em oranges after that. However, I do give them pineapple (fresh) with no problems.

Mine like kiwis. I give them just once in a while.

As for other citrus fruits, they don't like them. You should see their face when they smell orange or clementine <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Once food reaches the gliders cecum it relies mostly on bacteria to continue breaking it down. The excessive citric acid in citrus fruit kills off part of the bacteria causing diarrhea. The bacteria will replenish itself but it may take a couple of days. When choosing food for you glider always keep in mind that you do not want to feed foods that cannot not be broken down by the bacterial process. Or foods that are high on the acid side that will disrupt the balance of bacteria.

Oh thank you! Mine love kiwis, so I will watch that! Actually, maybe it's just that they love anything I give them that is a larger slice than the usual small cubes. I'll give them larger slices of apples!

I have only given Gizzy a SMALL piece of orange once, and it was when he was constipated....dear lord, it did the trick is all I have to say....I wouldn't give citrus fruits on a regular basis, but using a small amount to treat constipation might be a good thing...
