Ok, well Lexi is still alive and kicking. She seems to be getting quite attached to me. smile I was up every two hours last night to feed her and she was hungary each time. almost time I went in to get her, she was alone in the pouch. not cold, but not warm either.
However, when I put her back, mom and dad would always let her back in the pouch, however, she would be pushed to the other side of the pouch to sleep. until this morning. I had her with me after feeding cause i was worried about the little cut on her face. I put neosporin on it so hopefully that will help. When I finally put her back in with mom and dad, she curled up in mom's lap and Charlie was fine with it!
So, now, I'm not sure what to do...I have to go to classes today from 10-4. I don't know whether I should just leave her with her parents and come back at 11 to feed her and then at 4...or if I should take her with me along with her formula to feed her between classes. I'm not sure if taking her away from her parents for that long would make them reject her completely or not....
SO....Suz, anyone? Please tell me what to do!!
I have an incubator set up in case I need it...but if her parents are still somewhat caring for her, isn't it best that she be with them?
Please let me know! I'll check back periodically before I head to class....if I don't hear back, I'm going to take her with me, I just don't want her to go hungary.
Thanks all!!!

I have experience with handraising joeys.
In my opinion I would try to leave her with the parents if they seem ok with her right now. I would deffinitly try to go home and check on her whenever you can. If she gets rejected while you are gone she can die from being too cold etc.
If the parents show any signs of rejecting her again or she ends up with other wounds I would just take over all feedings with her. You don't want to take any chances.

I know how hard it is to handraise joeys so if you need any help and have any questions feel free to pm me anytime. I'm usually up late at night too.

Good luck with your little angel!!!

Thank you brandi! I am going to keep checking on her before i go to classes. The only thing is that I only have 10 minutes between classes so I can't come back to the house to check on her. I will only have my lunch hour at 11-12 to do that. That means she'll be alone until 4...and anything could happen to her then. frown

You're worried for a reason! Follow your gut instinct. TAKE HER WITH YOU! Leaving her with the parents is no longer working. Also, from 11-4 is way too long to let her go without eating. You said she's hungry after 2 hours. If you leave her at home and mom doesn't nurse her, she'll miss almost three feedings! The cut on her face did not get there by itself! It is a bite mark! If it were me, I would not take a chance. I would consider her rejected and start hand raising her. Mom may not have enough milk. When you get back home, take mom to the vet ASAP to make sure she doesn't have a pouch infection.

How old is she?
If she is under 5 weeks oop then she should be eating every 1-1 1/2 hours. Between 5-7 weeks oop every 2-3 hours. 7+ weeks oop every 4 hours until weaned.

Also remember to check often for dehydration. These little ones can get dehydrated VERY fast. Once they get dehydrated things can get really bad really fast!

One more thing, add canola oil to the formula you give. I will find my paper the vet gave me with the dosage for the canola oil. My vet along with Dr.Tristan highly recommended this.

ok. i'm taking her with me....
canola oil...ok, i'll look for that at the store when i go for pedialyte.
she is 9 days oop.
now, my second question:
how can i heat up the formula if i'm at school? i know that cold formula is bad. maybe i should keep it in a small container in my fleece so it stays warm?
how long is it good for though?
i do need to take mom to the vet. thankyou.

Good call! Do you know how to do the tent test?

Very interesting! What does the canola oil do?

Take a small thermos or cooler with ice and keep the formula there. When it gets close to feeding time, take out what you need and warm it. Let us know what the vet says!

I don't have a cooler, but i'll take a bag of ice. how do i warm it though? i won't have a microwave with me...i think there's a place i can get hot water. i'll try that. yes, i know how to do the tent test, i've done it and she's not dehydrated. i am keeping a really close eye on her.
ya, i am curious about the canola oil as well.

If you can't come home and check on her between your lunch and when you get out of school then I think Connie is right and you should take her with you. She should not go more than 2 hours without eating if she is under 5 weeks oop. You also don't want her to get cold.

I personally didn't use an incubator. I made a small pouch and put the Joey in it with a little blankie then shoved him in my bra. That's where he lived until he was about 8 weeks old. It made it a little difficult at first to sleep. I would sleep in a reclined position with pillows on either side of me to make sure I didn't roll over. Your body temp is the perfect temp for them. The beating of my heart and my smell also relaxed him.
This was just my personal choice. Many use an incubator and do great.

You need to get a baby bottle and a bottle warmer. Then you can warm it up in your car between classes.
Or if you can run the bottle under hot water that will work also. It doesn't need to be too warm. Just lukewarm.

Deffinitly take a little cooler or something to keep it cold whole you are at school. If you don't have a cooler then use a ziplock bag with ice and put the container of formula in that.

Let us know how today goes!!!

The canola oil helps with energy and something else.
I'm going to try to find that paper so I can give ya'll the exact info that is on it. If I can't find it I'll call my vets office and get the info from him.

I also used b12 shots that were vet recomended. I'll get that info too.

alright, so here's my plan.
She is currently snuggled up in fleece in my bra. that's where she'll be all day. it's safe and warm.
I'm taking her formula in a bag of ice. there is a drinking fountain that gives out hot water in one of the classrooms. i'll run the eyedropper under there to warm it up.
i will feed her between each class and after lunch and chapel.
Thank you all for your help! I dont' know what i would do without this site and you great people. smile smile THANK YOU!!!
I'll keep you all updated when I can! Say prayers for little Lexi. She's very good about telling me when she's hungry. She just kinda squirms and grunts really softly. it's adorable. smile i love this little girl.

Does your vet have experience with rejected joeys? If not or if he only knows a little about them then have him contact Dr.Tristan. Dr.Tristan is a VERY good doctor and will do phone consults and help out as much as possible. If you need Dr.Tristan's contact info let me know and I will try to get it for you.

Do you have a scale? If not you need to get one. Weigh her every day at the same time right before a feeding. Keep a log of her weight gain. She should be gaining between 1/5-1 gram every 1-2 days. This will help alert you if there is something wrong.

Thank you!!
If you could PM me Dr. Tristan's contact info, that would be great. Where is he located? I'm in KY.

I don't remember exactly where he is located right now. I'll get the info for you. You can also have your vet ask about the canola oil. I'll still try to find that paper for you.
If I can find it I can try to scan and email it to you if you want?

For some reason I just couldn't remember where he was! Thanks Robin!
I sent her his info also. He is such an awesome vet! One of the nicest I have ever dealt with! He really cares about gliders. And if there is something he is unsure of or doesn't know he will not hesistate to contact other specialists to get their advice and opinions!

Hey everyone!
Thanks for all your thoughts, advise and prayers! Lexi made it through today fine. She snuggled in my shirt all day and ate after every class really well. When i got home, I was able to stimulate her to go poo. i had tried to stimulate her after each feeding but I couldn't tell if she peed or not. but her poo looked normal.
So now, I just tried to feed her again this evening (she didn't eat when i got home, just wanted to sleep) and she didn't eat again now. so she's gone 2 hours without eating, and she just wants to sleep. She's still not dehydrated, but i'm going to get some pedialyte on my way home from dinner. She still moves around, I just don't know whether I should worry or not.
She's warm though, and sleeping.
Hopefully...she will start to perk up. I have read so many stories that start out strong and then go downhill to the little one dying, that I'm just afraid to hold my breath..I don't want to give up though.
Please pray!

She is eating a lot now, and pooping nearly everytime. She's also squirming a lot. I got pedialyte and she drank some so that's good! I will continue to mix it into her formula as described on Suz's site. I also weighed her, but I'm going to have to double check. Yay for Lexi!

I'm so glad that Lexi is doing so well. You did the right thing in taking her to classes with you.

I am going to combine this thread with the other one you posted yesterday about Updates... that way, all replies will be in one place thumb I'm also changing the thread title to "Lexi Updates" so that you can just continue to post updates about her progress, along with your questions, here wink

Lexi made it through the night happily though I can't say the same for me completely. Getting up every hour 1/2 to feed her is not fun. Plus, she cried every time i put her in her incubator so she slept in my bra in some fleece while i propped myself up between two pillows to keep me from rolling over. long night to say the least...and i have to go to work this morning. ugh.
but she's fine. i'm so happy for that. there was one time last night she failed the tent test, so i made sure she drank pedialyte and the next time i tried it, at the next feeding, her skin went down almost instantly. yay.
She weighs 15grams which, according to some charts i've seen is about average. i'm going to weigh her every day at the same time.
Well, time for work. I get to bring my little girl today. yay. smile

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers! Keep praying!

Lexi News!
My little sweetie is doing great! she eats a lot at each feeding and I have discovered that she eats a lot better when i can squirt a little of the formula on my thumb and then she licks it off. She seems to prefer this, and it also helps to keep it from dripping down her neck, which happens frequently. Keeping her clean has been the main issue for me.
She goes to the bathroom on her own, without stimulation. I stimulate her after each feeding anyway, but I'll often find her in my bra and her tail and her tummy are soaked. One time, she fell asleep upside down and peed...she was soaked! It was a mess to clean up.
I still have to get Cottenelle wipes, but for now, really soft papertowels have been the only thing that obsorbs the liquid enough to get her dry.
It was another long and sleepless night...however, I have the best hubby ever.
He insisted that he make up the bed so that it was impossible for me to roll over, so he filled it with pillows and then he said he was going to sleep on the couch so I would have enough room!
I tried to argue but to no avail. What a sweetie. heart heart
Anyway, her ears a little more open today. smile
So, she's doing well! Yay Lexi! She's a fighter.

I am officially exhausted. however, it is all worth it so far. Little Lexi is two weeks old today. I have been keeping her alive since Thursday. She is such a sweetie and it is so cute to watch her try to groom herself. She has often tried to climb out of my shirt in class, so I've had to make a little pouch for her, which she's not that fond of. she prefers skin on skin contact. she likes to groom me, it's so cute cause her teeth are so small right now. i love my little girl, but I must admit, i can't wait till she's old enough to eat out of a dish and old enough that I don't have to feed her every couple hours during the night. Thank you all for your advise, thoughts and well wishes!
I hope to get some updated picts soon. She has the sweetest little eyes. heart
