Freezing zookeepers? #8505

I'm considering buying 4 10-lb bags of zookeepers secret from zoofood.com, because it's cheaper to do that. Zookeepers (from what I understand) has a 4 month shelf life. I'm wondering if I can freeze the ZKS and just take the bags out of the freezer as I need them?

It says on their site that it's okay to freeze it. I'm not speaking from experience because I've never tried to freeze it. I doubt anyone can find a better price than them since they say they're the manufacturer.

Sugar_Mama, thanks for your reply! I did see that they said that you could freeze it, I guess I'm just trying to find out if anyone else has experience with this and if they have I have a few other questions.

1.) Once it was frozen, do you serve it frozen, or do you thaw it first?

2.) If you thaw it first, will the suggies eat it once it's been frozen and then thawed?

Those are good questions...sorry I don't have the experience to answer them. I'm sure there will be someone along shortly that can help. I'd like to know those answers, too.

I split my ZooKeeper's up in daily servings and freeze it in ziplock baggies. I just put it out fozen each morning and they have eaten it with no problems. It is generally thawed by the time they eat it.

Thanks Jayel! I am going to order 4 10-lb bags from zoofood.com, I'm going to send one to Jessie (Angels in my Pocket) and freeze the extras.

(This is, of course, after I determine that my gliders *like* ZKS.. they haven't tried it yet. )

This is a question I have. I just ordered some Zookeepers and received it yesterday. Do you need to keep it in the fridge, or can you just keep it in the pantry?

Also, it seems really mushy...is it supposed to be like this?...and, one last question...how much do you put in their cage during the day for them to snack on?

Katiedid,

You don't have to keep it in the fridge, but you can. It has a shelf life (meaning it could sit out) of 4 months. However, it might be best to keep it in the fridge to keep it moist and keep bugs away from it. (This is just my speculation as I haven't started using it yet.)

Yes, it's a fairly soft food. (I do know this because another member of the board gave me a little bit back when I first got Marcie.)

In terms of putting it out during the day, my gliders RARELY wake up during the day (one pair *never* does), so I'm not getting ZKS as a 'daytime' food. I'm sure someone who does will come along and give you an idea of how much to put out.

Katiedid - I just leave out about a tablespoon. I have one glider who is a daytime snacker, she gets up about 10:00 A.M., takes care of personal business, gets a snack, a drink, runs for about 5 minutes in her wheel and goes back to sleep. She does this every day.

You can leave it in the pantry, as long as it doesn't get too warm, doesn't have to be refrigerated. I buy it in large quantities, so I freeze it. It is supposed to be quite moist, that is one of the reasons I like it, I don't have to mess with soaking it.

Wow, I didnt know you could freeze it lol. I do not keep mine refrigerated either, just in a ziplock bag on "glider shelves" underneath Bandit's cage. It stays moist.

I have seen mine wake up during their "sleep time" and grab a peice of ZKS. I actually put fresh ZKS out at night, because mine love to eat it with dinner so much, but really don't eat it during the day.

I keep mine in the fridge b/c I heard too hot of temps can make it spoil faster and it has been in the upper 80s here lately. Plus then it stays with the yogurt and vits and the veggies and so forth and it is all in one spot
