I just wanted to share this info. that I had come across that many of us may not realize. I know many of us use wheat germ for our mealie bedding (I also was using it) until I discovered that on the label of the jar of wheat germ it says to refrigerate after opening! The company was contacted about this and they said that wheat germ will go BAD after 3 days of opening without being refrigerated! Here we are, using wheat germ and keeping our mealies nice and warm .....since I found out about this, I have eliminated the wheat germ from my bedding and only use oatmeal, bran cereal and baby cereal.

This info is for those who reaise their own mealies. I beleive you have to leave them out of the fridge or they will go dormant. If you just keep your mealies in the fridge then and never leave the container out for long periods of time then I am sure the wheat germ will stay fresh.

Like Denise says the oils in the germ go toxic and that's why it needs to be refrigerated. If you are refrigerating, as in for the feeder mealworms, you're okay. I too eliminated the germ from my bedding mixture just for this reason.

since this is the case, how is it that places are able to sell wheat germ in bulk, without it being refridgerated, when it may sit in the bins for weeks, if not months--
we bought a whole bunch that way, since it is a lot cheaper--for raising own mealies and making BML-- and have never refrigerated it because there are no instructions for it when you buy in bulk--our gliders have never been metabolically sick-- what about oat bran?

If you will go to the diet link and look at the BML you will see that the wheat germ used in this diet is not crude wheat germ. It is a processed product with vitamins added. I think this is where the confusion comes in. It is like the difference in breakfast cerals. Some are plain and some are the same thing only fortified with a lot of other things. Actually using the crude wheat germ in BML would alter the overall ratios of the diet. Aren't diets complicated! Charlie H
