I took Wynn in for his neuter this morning. After the neuter, but while he was still asleep, we noticed his penis had come out and the very tip of one end was black!!! tant So what started out as a neuter, also became a partial penis amputation! Wynn had shown NO signs of having this problem. I've never even seen him floss.

Because of the problem I had with Roo, who also had to undergo a partial penis amputation, I decided to have the vet remove Wynn's pom, just in case. I made this decision because he was already under anesthesia and I felt it would be better to have everything done at once. I also was afraid if I left the pom on, there might be a hormonal problem in the future and wanted to do my best to nip that in the bud.

After surgery, his penis remained prolapsed, despite KY, dextrose and manual manipulation. I called Teresa (thank you so much for being there for Wynn and me!!!) and she suggested putting Preparation H on him ONLY 1) If he had an ecollar on, OR 2) If he was a mellow baby, which he is, and I kept him swaddled in fleece or in my hands, as long as he had the Prep H on him. The Prep H reduces swelling and numbs. She told me the penis prolapse is normal and should resolve itself within 6-8 hours after surgery.

I have Wynn in my shirt, under my hand, over my heart. I check ever 20 minutes and reapply the Prep H. So far, there is very little, if any, retraction. I will continue to keep an eye on him. I still have 4 hours to go before my vet closes so if it doesn't retract, I'll have her to put him under again and manually replace it that way.

I went to the vet with the expectation of spending $85 for a neuter. I ended up spending $205 and may have to spend more later this afternoon. As when I took Roo in for his surgeries, at no point, did I have to worry about being able to pay for the surgery. My baby didn't have to suffer. I have a generous emergency vet fund that I touch for no other reason, than to provide vet care for my babies. If you don't have an emergency vet fund, please start one now!

I am so sorry Connie that Wynn is having this difficulty.
I hope that by later today, his little anatomy will retract itself, and things will begin to heal for him.

Keeping Wynn in my prayers. hug2

Sorry to hear about your baby. Hope he gets to feeling better real soon. And same for you. hug2

I've also had to experience a summer full of vet bills depleting my vet fund so your last words struck a cord. I help people rehome their gliders and in every case I've delt with so far they drop them off and run. I end up having to feed, care for, and provide cages for these gliders. I had one set that were with me for 6 months before I was able to rehome them to someone I was comfortable enough with to rehome with. This was the set that started my summer of sickness and quicker then a blink of an eye I had lost 3 gliders. With vet bills mounting, my fund depleting, and no answers I was left with no other option but to have a neucropsy done. Question was how to do it when there was no money left? If my aunt hadn't stepped in and donated the funds for vet bills (over $500 for neucropsy) I would have lost more babies. By the way, it was giardia that caused my personal nightmare. By the time summer was over I had lost 6 babies total.

So all off that just to ask you the question that crossed my mind when I read these words...

Any ideas on how to drum a vet fund up?

Elena - I am, what I lovingly refer to as "Flat Broke" - and I have an emergency vet fund! If *I* can do it, YOU can do it. Honest.

1) Open a savings account. This is a NEW savings account. If you already have a savings account - good for you! Open a second one.

2) Set up an automatic transfer from your checking account for whenever you get paid. If you get paid every Friday, the transfer will go every Friday. If you get paid the 1st and 15th ... you get the point.

3) The amount of the transfer is completely up to you. It can be as little as $5 each transfer.

4) NEVER EVER TOUCH THAT SAVINGS ACCOUNT for anything other than your vet. I don't care if your electricity is about to be shut off and you've been eating Ramen noodles for 3 weeks. Been there, done that. That savings account is NOT MY MONEY! If I can not keep the money in that account through personal crisis, I can not keep my animals. End of story.

An alternative way to do it is to apply for a credit card, and then use that card once a month -- for a purchase of less than $50 -- and pay it off every month. That will keep your account good with them, and it won't be closed. Never EVER charge more than $50 on that card - or more money then you can pay in one month - unless it is at the vet.

I actually use both these methods. I have a "vet only" credit card, and a "vet only" savings account. There isn't a huge ceiling on either - but enough to get us through anything but exceptional emergencies!

Connie - I'm really sorry to hear about Wynn! Especially right on the tail of Roo! I'm so glad you have that vet fund! HUGS!

WYNN'S WEE-WEE WENT BACK!!! dance jump mlove cry cry cry cry<----Tears of joy! I'm so happy! I called my vet and they said FANTASTIC! They were worried too! He woke up and ate a grape then snuggled back into my shirt, over my heart and went back to sleep!

I lost a kitten when I was 9. My parents didn't have the money to take it to a vet. I refused to have another pet until I had vet money. I started cleaning houses and babysitting when I was 12. When I was 14, I got another pet. Ever since then, I never got a pet until I had a very large vet fund. Try having a yard sale, auction off a mystery box on critterbin, brown bag it to work.....just off the top of my head. I know how fast an emergency can drain a vet fund!

Good ideas Alden! The only way I would ever touch my vet fund other than for my animals is for a true human emergency.

This just goes to show the importance of an emergency vet fund... what we should all consider doing is asking our vets if it is possible to put "deposits" onto our "accounts" at their offices. My doctor lets me do this. I over pay my bills and sometimes pay when I haven't been in ages- the "overage" is already there when I need to go to the doctor, so no need to pay for the visit! If even some of us could suggest/try this with our veterinarians- think how many pets could be helped! Ask your vet today if it is possible to "overpay" on your pet's account and leave it there! There is less temptation to touch it that way!! It could save your pet's life!!

Yay! jump Missed it all but glad to hear he's better!

And that's exactly how my vet fund started ~ a $5 transfer every week. I work for myself so I get paid daily. Seems like all my bills are due at the same 2 weeks, but on the 2 weeks I'm not paying bills I put $5 a day that I worked. Also, I have some people who always pay me cash and I don't even count that money. It goes in an envelope and I slam the door behind it. Can't even tell you how much is in there ~ I'm hoping alot by now!

Will be thinking about you Connie!

Connie! I'm so sorry you went through this... just read it... and I'm SO HAPPY he is all better!! You are right, it's a miracle! You found it, you fixed it, you got scared, and now it's all over! GO GIRL! hug2

I must add, that I had mental images of the whole process, since I've seen so many your gliders actually be neutered! hug2

Sari, the video this time was over 30 minutes! I put it on a DVD and in the mail, on it's way to Becki. I can't actually watch a neuter "firsthand". But if I watch it thru the camera lens, it's doable for me, without passing out! I watched it last night and was in tears by the time it was over. So many "what if's" were going thru my head!

Wynn did so well thru the night, I did something I've never done with any of my neuters, and put him back in the cage early this morning. Normally I wait until at least noon, and most times, until dinner time.

They were so overjoyed to see each other! After some serious grooming and marking, Wynn ran to the food dish and chowed down, then ran to the water bottle and drank till I thought he was gonna explode. He had the same food and water in the hosp cage, of course, but barely touched either one. Then he ran on the wheel like he was running for his life. I swear, he was smiling! After he wore himself out, he crawled into the pouch with Roo and Abeje and they all snuggled in a little fur ball of love & happiness. I do hear some snicking and know Wynn is irritating them the way he always does, by wanting to play when they want to sleep! LOL! I'm so happy right now!

Awww! Connie that is soo cute!

Also, I wanted to add to Alden's suggestions (which are awesome) that I set up the "Way 2 Save" savings account through Wachovia. Evertime I use my debit card it transfers $1 into the savings account. You have no idea how fast you will save. You can make withdrawals when you need them. The only resrticition is that you can not make more than $100 in additional deposits in a month. It has a 5% APY (for the first year) and a 5% first year bonus. So, you get quite a bit in interest the first year. I do not know if other banks have similar savings accounts. Just a thought!

Julie- I like the "deposits at the vet" idea. I wouldn't want to put too much there - as I can earn interest in Savings. However, I have deliberately over-paid before, too. My vet also allows payment plans. Which is a HUGE benefit! I know most don't. However - I have 20+ pets, so they pretty much know I'm coming back!

Connie - I'm so happy to hear of Wynn's progress! It sounds like Roo and Abeje were glad to see his little annoying self back home!

Thanks for all the great advice everyone. Sorry Connie but I had no idea that my one little question would begin to take over. I don't want to roach your thread so I'll start my own thread (How do I raise a vet fund?). Since this question must come up for other people too mods can you copy the suggestions there?

Connie I'll be PMing you about this idea.

Hooray! Glad to hear you caught his issues in time, that's great. I am going to call the exotics vet here and see if I can set up an account early, I love the idea of having an "excess" amount on my tab so if I am a few dollars short I can use money already at the vet's office. I wish we had a sticky concerning the importance of Emergency Funds and HOW to save for a vet fund, I think that would be EXTREMELY helpful. (unless we have one and I totally missed it, d'oh!) Don't forget Care Credit too, a lot of vets take it.

I had to show off this pic. Wynn resting in his special "recovery room." Sorry about the shadow of the camera strap.

I don't think wachovia is an online bank. There is a branch where I live and where my mom lives and it's the only bank I have ever used. It was on the news about a year ago because Wells Fargo bought Wachovia.

So, I am not sure if you could do it only online, but the teller convinced me one day to close my other savings accoount and open that one because of the high interest rate the first year and it is savings without effort, lol.

Btw, I love the pic. How cute!!! He looks very content.
