Roo's penis was stuck to his fur again!!!! tant cry He is so upset with me right now cause I put Preparation H on his penis. It looks healthy (thank God!) but is swollen and about 1/4" is sticking out. He wouldn't leave it alone so I had to put him in an ecollar. cry cry cry He's in the hospital cage now, with his back to me, alternating pouting, with fighting the ecollar. It's breaking my heart to watch him. cry cry cry

I'll be keeping close watch on him but I could use your prayers!

The swelling has gone down a lot. The very tip is starting to look a bit darker red. I'm afraid this is not going to end well but am still watching closely. If he does have to have surgery again, I'm hoping he'll be ok til Monday. If not, I'll be calling my vet for an emergency surgery. My poor Roo. He's so upset with me. He knows how to break my heart.
I never expected this to happen again. I'm wondering if this will be a reoccurring problem and what I can do to keep it from happening again???

OK. Just checked again (much to his disgust) and applied more Prep H. It seems to be a lot better than the last time. I think if I can keep the Prep H on it constantly, he may be just fine! I'll just have to apply it more often because he's rubbing it off on the fleece on the bottom of the hosp cage.

His mood is one of an extremely disgruntled glider. Thank goodness he doesn't have a gun! As it is, if looks alone could kill, I'd be dead by now. The last time I put him back in the hosp cage, he managed to nip my finger pretty good. Didn't break the skin but pinched hard enough to let me know what he thinks of me and the ecollar! I hate putting him in the hosp cage and would rather hold and love on him. However, affection in any form, is NOT on his agenda today so in order to not stress him out any more, I put him in the hosp cage and just watch from a distance. (A whole 2 feet!)

Oh no Connie!

Poor little angry boy! (I can relate - my Etta hissed at me when I picked her up from the vet today! She is SO MAD!!) But, we know it is for Roo's own good that he stay in that collar.

Glad the PrepH seems to be working. I wonder if it tingles/burns him? I have no idea! Or maybe it just adds to his already existing anger at the ecollar!

Thinking of you guys. Tell him to cut it out! We *know* he's a big, strong, tough, manly man! He doesn't have to show us any of his anatomy to prove it!

It's supposed to numb, which could feel like coolness and feel weird to him. Sigh. He's going to give me gray hair!

I'm glad Etta is finally back! How is she doing? If only our babies knew how much their problems and pain, hurts US!

I'm about ready to have the vet remove his 'manly' part!!! LOL!

Connie,

You need to have a long talk with that little man about playing with that and leaving it out too long. Glad to hear that the PrepH is working.

I am sure he is staring daggers at you when you get close.

I don't think he's playing with it. The problem is, when he's asleep, he's so totally relaxed that it partially slips out! Sometimes, as much as half of it is hanging out!

I just talked to my vet. She said as long as the Prep H is doing so well, that he should be just fine. She said since the swelling is staying down with the Prep H, his penis is staying in and looks healthy, to just keep a close eye on him thru the weekend and bring him in Monday and she'll take a closer look. Of course, if he gets worse, she knows I'll bring him in before then and is ready for him!

Little stinker sure likes worrying his mommy!!!

His penis has been in for 7 hours now. I want to think he's ok and put him back with Abeje and Wynn but I'm scared to. I'd like to wait until Monday morning but I'm wondering if I'm being paranoid and stressing him needlessly by keeping him in the ecollar, in the hosp cage, away from his cage mates? Abeje has been crying for him for 5 hours now frown

I am so sorry about your little Roo -

A while ago I had a Glider that sucked his penis and it wouldn't go back in and my vet had to cut almost all of it off - it didn't seem to bother him at all and he just went along his merry way - I'm not saying this is what should be done but that is what Pepe' had to have done to him -

This is not looking good. The tip keeps changing from red to very dark red. It's not black.........yet. I've already made plans to take him to my vet in the morning. I'm afraid he's going to have to have surgery again. My poor Roo baby..... cry cry cry

There is no doubt. The tip has turned black. cry cry cry I've called my vet and she wants him brought in first thing in the morning so I'll be waiting there when she comes to unlock her door. I'm so heartbroken for my precious baby. cry cry cry It hurts that he has to go thru this yet again. For now, I'm keeping Prep H and Neosporin on it. I gave him a dose of metacam at noon today along with a dose of antibiotic (per vet instructions), he's in an ecollar and hosp cage. He's so upset with me and I don't blame him one bit.

It's only been six weeks since he recovered from the last surgery for this problem. What are the chances this is going to happen again? What can I do to prevent it???

Connie,

How much did she amputate the last time? Maybe he needs a total amputation. I know it sounds harsh, but how many times can he go through this? If he keeps it out when he sleeps you will be going through this every couple of months until he has had a total amputation.

Discuss it with your veterinarian.

Poor Roo,

She removed about 1/4 inch and about 1/4 inch came off by itself. I wondered about a total amputation but if she does that and he has problems again, what would the next step be?

With a total amputation there would be nothing for him to hang out. He would basically have enough to urinate.

When I was a lot younger and used to hang out at the veterinarian's office back where I used to live they did a total peninectomy on a cat that had problems with urinary crystals. Basically he urinated like a female cat after that, no penis what so ever.

I know they are drastic measures, but sometimes they have to be done.

I'm going to have my vet call Dr Bradley and see what she thinks. I think it might be a good idea for total amputation too.

Been out taking care of Lauren & Eddie. How did I know I needed to come look you up?!

hug2 for you.

Maybe start a thread asking who all has had total penis amputations. Maybe you'll find some that was in your same situation and they can tell you how they are now. dunno

I know he's at that age when they let it all hang out. But I've only had 2 neuters and all that hanging out stopped soon after. So I don't have alot of experience with teenage neutered males.

Good luck at the vet tomorrow! mlove

We're back home. He had a partial amputation. She suggested having the amputated section sent off for a biopsy to U of I (University of Indiana) and I agreed immediately. The results should be back in a week.

Roo was given a local in the penis before surgery, a pain shot and fluids after surgery and was sent home with Tramadol, Torb, Metacam and Bactrim, to be administered for three days. I have to take him back in two days for a followup but of course, if there are any problems, I'll take him back sooner.

Roo is doing great! mlove mlove He's eaten and drank water and is sleeping comfortably and happily in my bra. heart I took pictures, which I will now upload to photobucket and share with you.

Today's procedure was $265.65. Of that, $60 was for the biopsy. I am hoping it will tell us why this is happening to him and maybe help other gliders at the same time. Once more, there was no worry at all about the cost of this vet visit. It could have been ten times that amount or more, and not been a problem. If you don't have an emergency fund, please, for the sake of your glider, start one now!

Thank you for all your prayers and help! Teresa, Bourbon, Mary and Raine.............you were my lifeline!!!!! heart hug2 heart hug2 heart

Connie, thank you for sharing those photos even though I know how hard it was for you to take them. I so hope this clears up Roo's "issues" once and for all.

Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.

I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance

I hope the pics help others. If they have to go thru this, at least they'll know what's happening.

Roo decided he wanted out of my bra so I gave him a grape to boost his sugar and some water. He wanted to sleep in my hand and did so, sucking on the tip of my thumb. heart Don't think THAT didn't melt my heart! LOL!

He woke up a few minutes ago and seemingly all at once realized how totally filthy he was and is remedying that situation right now. He hasn't messed with his cloaca at all, just the fur around it.

He's been getting lots of kisses!!!

Here are pics that didn't come thru in my earlier post. I didn't know there was a cap on pics.
