Oh no! that's awfull! I'm not very knowledgeable about gliders so I hope someone will be here soon to give you advice. I know there is something on this site about taking care of rejected joeys and I'm guessing that's what you will have to do. I'm not sure where this article is but I'll keep looking.

If the mother is dead I'm guessing you'll have to detach the baby to hand feed it. The only thing I can say for sure is that you must keep it warm.

Good luck I'll let you know if I find the thread. Please keep us posted.

Val

It will be very hard since the joey was still in pouch and not fully developed... how far along was she?

You will need to supplement the joey very often and keep it warm constantly.

There are some good links in this forum and a few on my site and suz's site as well.

I, too, would not know really anything, I am so sorry about the loss of your momma glider... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" />

I would think the chances of baby's survival would depend somewhat on how close it was to detaching from mom... I wish I could be more help. Good luck!

When the others get here to help I think they'll need to know how far along the joey is. If you post how many weeks it's been IP maybe they will be able to help you faster.

I've found one thread so far that could help you out a bit. It's about a 1 week oop joey. http://www.glidercentral.net/ubbthreads/...true#Post529889

Unfortunately, since the baby is still in pouch it's chances are slim to none, but with some hard work on your part, it has a chance. Now, if you are willing to take on the chalange, here's what you need to do. Gently pull the baby off of momma's teat, holding the babies mouth between your thumb and fore finger and gently pulling uptil the baby detaches. Now, you'll need to warm the baby up. The best way to do that is by putting it in your bra or in a breast pocket of a shirt. Once the baby has warmed up, you can try hand feeding it. For an IP baby, a tapered eye dropper would be best. They should have them at your local pharmacy. I personally use ensure to hand feed joeys. Vanilla works best. Put the eye dropper full of ensure up to the joeys mouth and drop a little on it's lips, the liquid should stimulate a natural nursing action continue to feed until the baby stops nursing. Try to follow up with a small amount of water. You'll need to feed the baby every 2 hours. After feedings, you'll need to stimulate it to go to the bathroom. You do that by rubbing a warm damp Q-tip over the babies cloaca (genitals). Good luck.

Im really not sure how old the baby is. All I can tell you is that he is about and inch long, pink, and VERY tiny. I used Suz' joey formula idea. I hardly boubt that he will make it, but its my first baby so I need to try my best. This definetly isnt the situation I hoped for!

Anymore advice?? Im staying home from school today to work with him.

Please keep us updated on the baby.

Also, so sorry for your loss.

Sincerely,
Paula

Well i detached the baby, (not an easy task) and now i am keeping him warm. I tried to feed him with the syringe, but he wouldnt take it. The vet doesn't open for another half hour so I have to wait to get the catheter. I can't find an exotic pet vet near here in IL. Im really stressing out over this. I dont want to lose both of them!!!

Thanks for the replies,
Jess

Here's a link to the vet directory. There are 2 vets in chicago. I've never heard of them before but I guess it's still beter than a non-glider vet.
http://www.glidercentral.net/links/pages/Vets_Database/United_States/Illinois/Chicago/index.html

I hope everything works out, I'm so worried about this little joey and I've never even seen a glider in real life!
Hang in there!

Thank you so much for the likns, but there is no way I could get out to Chicago today. It's a good 2 hours with rush hour. I'll just keep brainstorming.

THanks again,
Jess

Try a pharmacy... they will sometimes have catheters.... I was able to get ONE one time in an emergency.

have you tried feeding with a small seringe or eye dropper?

maybe even a drop of food on your finger might work... at this point anything is probably worth a try..

iv tried 4 kinds of syringes. Now im cutting one up and try to make it smaller. He is too small to eat off of my finger, it would just get all over him. He is about the as long as the tip of your pinkie and half as skinny. So this is pretty tough. I really need a foster mom.

Again I don't know much about gliders, but are you sure another glider would take in the baby? I might be wrong, but I'm not sure another female glider will accept to feed your little one...

Maybe there is someone in your area with a catheter who could give you a hand.

Well, there is a chance that the mom wouldnt, but its would be more likely to live than with me trying to feed it. Gliders arent that popular in IL. Im not sure wut to do.

Jess, I know how hard this must be for you. Please don't blame yourself if this little one dies, it is so small and really not developed far enough to hand feed. Even with joeys that are just oop, it's such a difficult thing to do. We can all telll your trying your hardest. If you can't get an eye dropper, then there is really no way to feed this wee one. And I have never heard of another lactating mother to take another joey. I don't know what the mother died of, but please take care of daddy, if it was an illness, please have daddy vet checked.

Again, your doing all you can. Please don't beat yourself up over it.

Well, I got some fluid into him a couple of mins ago. It took a bit of tough love. I have decided to take him to a wildlife rescue if he makes it to the afternoon. Hopefully they will be more skilled in knowing how to save him than myself. The only problem is that they wont give him back to me if he makes it. So now I will lose him either way. Im so torn, not only did I lose my precious Sally, but her baby Zero too. Jack is already stressing to know where she went. So Im goning to have to fins me a new little girl to fill the hole in my heart. I could never replace my Sally Bear, but I dont know what I would do with out my gliders.

I should have known something could have gone wrong. I got her from a swap with a male. The people didn't know anything about her, and she was always extreemly small. The boy died not long after, but she made it. Maybe she was older than they told me and she just couldn't handle the baby. I dont know, but next time I will find out a lot more about who Im adopting before making a decision. Thanks for sticking by me, its still going to be hard to let go, but I know they will be in a much better place.

I tried so hard you guys. But he just died in my palm. I only knew him for a day, but im still feel so atached. I wish I could have taken him to safe haven sooner, maybe then he could have made it. How is it I already miss him so much?? Thanks again for all of your support. This has been such a horrible week for me. Not only has my best friend gone missing, but now I have lost my babies. I hope no one else has to go through this. My they rest in peace.

You're a good hearted, caring person. We need more like you in this world.

Stay focused on the male now. He needs you.

[:"green"]Jess,
I'm so sorry <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crying.gif" alt="" />.
You did everything humanly possible, but the chances were very slim for this little one since it wasn't even out of pouch yet. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> from all of us here...
