I'm curious - Are there many instances of male gliders being crypt orchids, or is it pretty uncommon? (Either unilateral or bilateral.) I'm mostly wanting to know (if this occurs), how neutering would proceed, since gliders are so tiny, or if the testicles would simply be left alone because surgery would be too risky. Just a student that's wondering.

That is a term I've not heard before. Crypt orchids? If you mean how many have undesended testicles, it does happen. I'm not sure what rate it happens though. In most cases, nothing is done unless it leads to a medical problem such as cancer. Any abdominal surgery on a glider, either male or female is VERY risky and seldom has a good outcome.

Crypt orchid means 'hidden testicle,' but yes, I am referring to undesended testicles. Thanks for the input. I figured it would be pretty risky and likely something that'd be left alone, but I wasn't sure.

Teresa,
You have horses and have never heard that term before? I knew right away before I opened the thread what he was asking.

Cryptorchidism is the term, and it means the abscence of one or both testes from the scrotum. I have no idea if this is a common occurance in gliders or not. But yes, they can still be removed if they are undescended. Though it is rarely done in animals unless there is a health risk involved. Most cases of cryptorchidism result in a "dead" teste as the internal body temperature basically "cooks" them and they don't produce sperm. But... undescended testes are at a MUCH MUCH higher risk for cancer growth. So they SHOULD be removed if there is any family history of cancers in the glider's lineage. And a very close eye should be kept for signs of infection or tumor growth. Hope that helps...

Interesting. Thanks for the replies. Though I've had gliders before and worked as a vet tech, I didn't have any glider specific experience on the job.

You have horses and have never heard that term before? I knew right away before I opened the thread what he was asking. Funny that you should mention that. I have three females (two mares, one filly and one mule) and my Moose. Moose is what I've always called a Hot Geld. He has one undesended testicle and had the other removed(gelded). I'd just never heard that term before.
