I'm just curious. In general which sex does better being a solitary pet?

I don't think the gender matters. It would depend on the glider's individual personality, emotional needs and character.

I realize this is a specific question but please keep in mind that most of the time, gliders do much better with at least one other glider for a cage mate.

Sugar Gliders are social animals, they are not meant to live alone and are not happy if kept in a solitary situation, regardless of gender. To keep them alone because it fits our lifestyle better is a selfish act of trying to conform them to our perfect little "pocket pet" standards. I hope this was just a curious question and not an intention of yours. IMO if we are not capable of conforming to THEIR needs of a good home then the responsible thing to do is NOT to own one. No animals should have to suffer for our selfishness. But I am sure you were just asking out of curiosity wink

While I agree that most gliders need to have a companion (another glider) to be happy, some just refuse to have a cage mate. My Sebastian had the love of his life and she passed away. He grieved unlike any other glider I've seen. Since, I've tried him with numerous other gliders and he will sort of accept them into his cage but he keeps his distance and over grooms. He doesn't fight with them, but it is obvious that he is unhappy about it. He seems to like having neighbors he can talk to but doesn't want to share his house with anyone. I haven't given up but it looks like he will remain a single glider (with neighbors).

Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.

I completely agree. I have just one bachelor. He refuses to go in with anyone else, no matter how much I try. He just doesn't want any other glider. I still have faith that one day, he will accept the other boys. For now, he fights with them but enjoys my comapny. So, he gets a ton of attention and mealies. cloud9

Either way, I do not recommend getting a glider as a single, for your pet. I have heard stories where single gliders tend to have more medical problems than the ones with friends. worried It would be your best bet, and the gliders best bet to get it a friend. thumb

Awww, Dancing I'm sorry to hear about that. There are definitely those special situations for sure. It is not the rule but there are those exceptions. His story is so sweet and shows just how deeply they are capable of loving but it is sad that he is still grieving like that. Perhaps just having other Gliders in nearby cages that he can "talk" to is enough for him.

I just wanted to deter somebody from intentionally keeping a Glider single because its more convenient for them.

I totally agree. Whenever the glider will allow it, they should be kept in atleast pairs. They (for the most part) THRIVE when they have a buddy that talks their language, has and understands their little quirks and can be there all the time to play with them and cuddle with them and just to share LIFE with them.

It breaks my heart that Sebastian won't accept another. But he seems content with the way things are, atleast for now.

i havnt read any of this, i am just responding to the title totally from my own experience...........hands down the girls do better alone here..............i have 4 girls at this time (from 5 months to 8 years old),they eat and play
(cept Sugar, she eats then waddles up to the hammock to watch the others)......but she does not appear to be depressed. I have 2 boys that are alone and they sleep a lot................Spencer eats, Nick eats "just enough". I am not all about having lone gliders BUT thats the way it is right now. Hopefully it wont stay this way long..........well Spencer may not be with another glider again cause he is too mean to other gliders but likes to cuddle.........mean as in bites them and smacks them around with his ecollar so he and sugar are splitsville since early July. They still visit supervised for short periods of time.
Good luck with whatever you decide is best!!
