is it just her privates, back and sides she keeps scratching? When most animals scratch these areas its a sign of intestinal parasites (worms usually)but since these guys are not like most animals I am not sure if it would still apply. Do you have really dry heat? If thats a factor get a vaporizer for the room shes in ... might help. I am sure one of the other folk here might have other\better ideas but if she keeps it up I would take her for a fecal just in case. Good luck and keep us posted!

Constance,

Welcome back.

The only way to determine if it is worms is to have a vet do a fecal test. Is Huggles using the bathroom normally (both in quantity and appearence)?

The "scratching" her sides on the sides of the cage sounds almost like marking. Could that be a possibility? Have you recently cleaned the cage?

The only other possibility I can think of is as Toni stated, if the room is dry she may have developed dry skin. Most vets will do a fecal test without having to actually bring in Hugles wich should be less expensive and at least eliminate one possibility.

Constance,

Both males and females can mark. The scent glands on a male are more prominant but females have them as well. Only females have pouches.
The cost of the fecal test really varies by vet. My vet only charges $10 or $15, but he is reasonable on all of his prices in regards to Sugar Gliders because he is still learning. Call your vet and ask how much they would charge to run a fecal. It should not be that much.
I'm not that familiar with the spray. There are two kinds, one you spray on their food and the other you spray directly on them. Hopefully someone else will be able to help answer questions about the sprays.

It's hard to say. Some fruit or other food that Huggles has eaten may have contained worm eggs. The freshly painted cage may be contibuting to this behavior, but a fecal would at least tell you for sure that it is not worms.

I'm not sure. I would not think it would be that much. I've never had any with worms. Hopefully it will not even be worms, but the vet may work something out with you considering that you are a student. Many vets will take payments in order to ensure that a pet gets treatments.

Ushuaia, has a glider that has worms. Hopefully he will jump in here and give you some idea of treatment costs.

Med for parasites is about $10 plus another $10 or so for a fecal without the glider. Costs may vary somewhat depending on what kind of parasites if any.

If nothing else use the phone and call a vet in your area and ask about the fees.

Not knowing your glider's normal behavior, but if you're worried, a vet visit is due. But this sounds like the normal grooming and marking that my gliders do. Mine will all rub along their sides as part of the marking. It looks like almost like a cat rubbing against your leg, pushing and stretching as they go. As for the scratching, mine have spent as long as an hour each night as they wake up from sleeping, grooming themselves while still in their pouch. (Almost like they don't want to be seeen till they have their makeup on <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" /> )

Constance,

Glad to here you were able to find the problem and get treatment for it. Had never even thought about mites being the problem. Mites are easily treated once identified, so there should not be any problems. Keep us up to date on Huggles progress.

thats great news! glad those parasites were on the outside instead of in ... if you're anything like me you would have a heck of a time figuring out what she got them from. I'll remember the freezer trick just in case I bring my crew anything like that from outside. Thanks for the update!

The Ivamection is very effective and will clear up the mites in no time. You will need to clean her cage and bedding with hot water and soap and dry well.

Many a glider has lost his little ears due to a mite infestation. Your little one is very lucky as she was taken to the vet early.

Thank you for posting follow up.
