Weird Wodent Wheel Accident! #868527

Has this ever happened to anyone else? My 2 gliders LOVE their wodent wheel! I only put it in their cage about 3 times a week because my little girl is kind of obsessive about it and it makes so much noise that hubby and I can't sleep.
Tonight I put it in there and they both immediately started playing. I left the room for a minute and when I came back I could only see my little girl on the wheel. I keep the cage next to the bed at night because I'm a bit of a night owl and I leave the door open while I'm awake so they can come visit. So I kept an eye out to see where my boy (Ace) was. After about a minute I started to check his usual hiding spots and noticed he was still in the wheel but not poking his head out when it stopped like he usually does. I stopped the wheel so he could get out but he still just hung on. Turns out his tail was wrapped around the axle of the wheel inside. Of course I panic and wake up Jeff to help me free him. After 2 hard bites and a few seconds we managed to get his tail loose. Ace jumps out and begins grooming his tail. Then Crickett decides she was going to help him. He seems a little skaken but physically fine. He hid in his pouch but I was able to coax him out with his favorite cat toy to get a good look at him. Then I guess he decided I could still reach him if he was in his pouch so he went to rest in his "man cave". (a clear hamster cube with tunnels leading to it).
Has anyone had a problem like this before? Is there a better or safer wheel? They love their wheel so much that I hate to take it from them but I'm affraid to put it back in the cage. I'm glad I was awake and paying attention.

Yes - it has happened, and has resulted in tail amputation.

There is a piece you can put over the center bar to make it safer.

However, after this happened to one of my gliders (thank God without incident) I switched to ALL Stealth wheels.

I did have a glider loose the last 1/4 inch of his tail on a Stealth - but it was a VERY freak injury and the only one of it's kind I'm aware of.

Where would I find the piece to cover the axle? I saw a wheel that comes with it but is there a site that just sells the cover piece?

Is he okay??

This post definitely settles it for me..
I am ordering the TGI Wheel (doesn't have a bar) ASAP... but it'll probably need to wait a week or two....

Is there anything I can do in the meantime to protect my gliders tails? I don't want to take it out for weeks at a time, while I wait for the new wheel to come..

Ace seems fine. He let me stroke his tail and didn't try to nip at me so I take that to mean it's just tender and he's not in pain. I was just looking on a website that actually sends an axle protector with your wheel. (it wasn't the site I purchased my wheel from) I had no idea that I needed to be worried. I think we will just end up purchasing a different wheel.

You can get the axle piece for free (maybe plus shipping?) if you ask for it from the place you got your wheel.

Yes. Get a straw from McDonalds (their straws have a larger diameter), or a small piece of PVC and run the Axle through that. Make the piece exactly the right length - no gaps on the front or back!

That will work until you get a new wheel or the piece from the vendor.

I am doing some more research on wheels now...

The Sleath and Custom Cruiser are awfully nice... I'm trying to figure what will be better for my skinny young ones. There's been multiple posts about that though (some I've participated in), so I won't get into that here though....

I was leaning towards the TGI simply because I thought I could save on shipping by purchasing that and the e-collars from the same place, but it looks like e-collars ship for free when purchased alone.

I will do that with a straw though until I get the new wheel.

It would be best to have your little one checked by the vet to make sure there is no injury to his tail. Sadly, there have been quite a few gliders injured (broken tails, degloved tails, tails completely pulled off) and even killed with this very type of accident.

While there are the guards you can use, they do not make them completely safe. I know of one glider's death due to this and the wheel being used DID have the guard on it.

I don't believe the wodent wheels are at all safe for any glider with a tail. (and the cotter pin on the front has caused injuries as well)

Even with the straw cover it is very important to keep the center post of the wodent wheel CLEAN. If it gets sticky, as they tend to do, with pee and poo covering them. The fur on a glider's tail is more likely to stick to the bar if it is dirty, as they are spinning around. The straw cover will move, where the center bar does not, but if dirt builds up on and around the straw cover it will not turn on the post.

That was the point I was just about to make Candy. The center axle of the Wodent wheel doesn't spin with the wheel, which is what causes the tail to get wrapped around it. The axle cover or straw must move freely to avoid tail wrapping!

As Teresa said, even with a guard, accidents have happened and lives have been lost.

I have a stealth, and I love it! Silent, safe, easy to clean, etc.

I personally would never use a wodent wheel, as I don't feel they're safe. Period. I've heard of too many tails getting caught or the wheel falling apart because it wasn't put together precisely how it should have been and gliders getting pinched or killed....

I am going to take extra to wipe down that bar every day then..can be a hassle, because taking apart the wheel is tough!! but better safe than sorry until I can get a new wheel.

I've decided to order the Custom Cruiser, but it might take a week or two until I am able to... perhaps longer if Bourbon isn't taking orders.

Do you think that the Wodent Wheel will be okay in the cage for a few more weeks, if I put the straw cover on the bar, and clean it out each day?

Hi there. That and the cleaning factor made me switch to all stealths. They don't make any noise and are a snap to clean. Love the stealth!!! I would consider switching to that or something similar.

One of the reason I all mine are Stealth now...They are quite, no middle bar and the kids love them SO MUCH better than the wodents.

I would think it would be fine. I am taking it though that you have the 8 inch because otherwise yours should have come with a glider guard.

Nope - I have the Wodent Wheel Senior..didn't come with a guard. But I got it from a poor source, so that could be why.. from a certain company that tries to pass it off as being another wheel, despite the fact that it clearly says "Wodent Wheel" on the back.

I've sent an email late last night -- no response yet.. hopefully soon. Calling is a bit of a hassle, due to my not having long distance service. She does seem very reliable though, so I am sure she will get back to me soon.

Just be careful to be SURE that you put the wodent wheel together 100% correctly. Even then, there's a risk.

I've heard of a few people who have had gliders running in the wheel, and all of a sudden, the wheel fell apart. This can pinch the glider between pieces, and if it pinches the right spot, it could kill them. frown

Sheila,
It was an 11 inch wheel. We are no longer going to use it. I have been worrying myself about it all day long. If I hadn't been paying attention he could have really been hurt. He was his usual self by about 7am. Jumping and playing. I felt so bad for him that he got a few extra treats this morning.

I use stealth and custom cruizers and love them both! I'm so glad your little guy is ok!!!

One more thing about the stealth or custom cruizer....they can have their wheel every night cause they both are so quiet!!

Yes, I think I mentioned this before, but the stealth is by FAAAAR the quietest wheel I've ever had. For any of my pets, not just gliders!

The only thing you can hear is their little nails tapping, and the air moving while the wheel spins, but absolutely NO sound from the wheel!

She's been in touch via email answering all of my questions, so I now know exactly what I want to order at least. Unfortunately though I will need to wait until at least the weekend (if not early next week) to order...

I think the raffle goes until.... the end of next week, right? *guessing*

If not..well, at least I am going to have a nice wheel.

Wintersong, sorry about the telephone thing.. I like to make sure that the wheels are customized to exactly what you would want for your gliders. I am happy I could still help you with your choices. I had no problem helping with your individual needs. I so hope you can get your raffle tickets, as they are for a great cause!!
