hey everyone i was just wondering how warm the gliders need to be sense my room is in the basement, and gets pretty cold. what kind of heat source is best(and cheapest to run) are ceramic heat lamps a good option? will they keep it warm enough by the cage even though the rest of the room is cold?(and it is a big room so hard to heat with little heater) and the most important thing are they safe? any other good options? thanks everyone

If you have some kind of light fixture over the top to heat the cage then that should be fine. Just dont use the rock heaters. How cold does it get? If you could build some kind of wooden wall around it with the light over top that might help keep the heat in. Have a thermometer outside of the cage where you can keep up with the temperature. Make sure they have lots of pouches and blankets just in case. I hope this helps. I am sure someone else will be along soon with better advice.

If your little ones are chewers you can't do this but you can hang a heating pad on the outside of the cage covering only 1/2 of their pouch. I would consider moving them if it is indeed that cold. Mine have their own building and we use oil heaters until we can get a unit put it. They work great but we do pay a big light bill to keep them warm. I would move them if keeping them warm is hard to do in the basement they need to stay about 70-80 degrees or that is what i keep mine. They stary pretty warm.

I use a little heater, it only costs like $10 at wal-mart. It is a fan and a heater in one and it's not oil and heats up the glider's room very well IMO. It is only about 8 inches tall and heats up their room really fast and efficiantly.

If you want to use a heat lamp, I would recommend using a ceramic lamp rather than a glass lamp. I've used the ceramic lamps for 8 years with no problems

thanks i think im going to use a ceramic heat emmiter how do u position it? how close and does it point towards one part of cage or all of the cage? also do u use a control to turn it off when it gets to hot? does ti make the cage wire hot and if it does what kind of cage should i buy so it doesnt get hot? thanks everyone. and by the way a 1500 watt heater cost about ten cents an hour to run add that up and it gets pretty high pretty quick

I have my ceramic heat lamp suspended about 8-12 inches above the cage. Since my cage is quite large, it doesn't heat the entire cage but does make a "warm" spot that the gliders can go to if they get chilled. My Sassy used to like to hang under it as he got older. I think the extra warmpth felt good on his bones so I don't believe that the cage wire got hot. (I have vinal coated hardware cloth for my cage) I also have the ceramic heat lamp hooked up to a thermostat so that I can adjust the temperature and would recommed this if you can find a thermostat.
