I can't remember where I read this exactly, but I seem to think it was either from Perfect Pocket Pets, or one of their fake sites (NASGA,) but it mentioned not having your gliders in the same room that you were cooking if you were using a non-stick skillet/pan, since the fumes are toxic to small animals. Is this true? My guys don't go into the kitchen much, and I wouldn't have them in there while cooking, but I'm just curious.

I remember being told that by (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets... Mine stay out of the kitchen for the most part, anyway, but it'd be interesting to know for sure.

When heated to HIGH temperatures, the non stick coating gives off toxic fumes. These fumes are known to cause death in birds. I do not know of any direct glider deaths due to this though. It is often a case of when something is " toxic" to birds, it is assumed to be toxic to gliders as well since birds have very delicate systems as well as gliders. My gliders are no where near my kitchen (though I have a bird literally 3 feet from the stove on the other side of the "bar") and I've always used non stick pans. The key is to NEVER cook on high heat or let the pans burn.

Teflon poison is very real, my mother accidentally killEd our molucan cockatoo and two other small parrots by burning a meal. The fumes are fatal to animals much larger than gliders. So becareful! The birds were in the next room.

Wow, thanks for sharing this. (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets said it, so I wasn't sure if it had any weight or not.

I know birds are really sensitive, so maybe it's only birds?
Still, I don't think I'd want to risk it.

I burned something last week while boiling it....the water ran out. The smell was all over the house. I live in a 2 story and my gliders are on the second story. The smell made it all the way up to my bedroom. I was so freaked out I checked my gliders every few minutes while I was airing out the house.
Needless to say, they were annoyed at me waking them up more than anything.

I have a bird and gliders, and ever since I got my bird I haven't used anything with teflon. Not only is it fatal to birds, it's really not good for humans either. If your pans have the black stuff chipping off, you are ingesting that. The fumes also aren't good for people either, but it's more when the pan starts chipping. Also, they are toxic to the earth. Why they ever even started making pans with it just so people could have 'non-stick' is really beyond me, when there are other options available for non stick. Wal-Mart and other stores now carry eco non-stick pans and I picked one of those up and it works just like teflon. Very nice pans. I was using stainless steel before those came out, and I've learned to compensate so that stuff doesn't stick. The only thing I really can't cook on stainless steel is bacon. But I can cook bacon in my eco-safe pan It's a non stick coating, but without the harmful chemicals. Great topic!
