i just found my female glider dead in the bottom of the cage. she seemed fine yesterday. she was about 7-8 years old. she is housed with 2 neutered males and 1 unneutered male (Loco). They are housed in a modified rabbit hutch..about 5 feet long 3 feet high. She had been housed with the 2 neutered males for the past 6 years (since i got her) and i bought the Loco 2 years ago when he was young...about 4-6 months. Recently (~2 weeks) Loco had been trying to mate with her, i noticed lots of crabbing. So i watched them frequently throughout the day and he didnt seem overly rough with her, though very persistent about breeding. Is it possible that he killed her?? I found her with extensive bite marks to the back of the neck and head. The ones on the neck broke through the skin. Also...her...eyes were gone..like they ate them (gag). I feed them a BML diet for the past 10 years (since ive had them) with other goodies. Do you think she was sick and i didnt notice or did Loco bite her to death?? Im soo upset, im beyond tears. I just dont understand what happened. The cage is so quiet now as she was the one to run in the wheel forever. I was so looking forward to adding to my gliders with my own hand-tamed babies, all my gliders were rescue. instead now i have a dead one....ANy insight would be welcome..Also do you think Loco will kill another female?

I am so sorry to hear about your loss!!! I am glad to see you here at GC. I know that gliders get a little rough and leave bite marks here and there when mating. I am not sure if your male killed your little girl. It seems that when a glider gets sick they can hide it so well from us that we and the gliders they are with do not have a clue, untill it is to late. They do this to survive out in the wild. I would guess that she might have been sick and just hid it and you did not know. She sounds like she lived a wonderful life with you and you gave her so much love. I again am very sorry to hear about your loss and you will be kept in my prayers .

I am so sorry for your loss. I am at a loss for words because I am not experienced with this part of glider world yet but I wanted to send my prayers your way. It does seem like blissy said that you give them lots of love and she knew you loved her very much. BTW, I just wanted to say "Welcome to GC"

I am terribly sorry for your loss, but this is what I wanted to find. Unfortunately, you didn't see it happen, nor was any other glider hurt, so I would say most likely, it was an illness. And we don't know without a necropsy. Myabe you could get your local vet to do one on your baby girl so that we can find out if she was really sick. *hugs*

I'm so sorry you lost her.

Strange, someone else recently posted about an almost identical situation and about the eyes too. I am going to see if I can find it.

I was terrified reading the first one, now another one? Is there something else going on here? More necropsies need to be done to see what's happening or am I being paranoid?

thank you all for your kind words. im still so upset mainly because it was so sudden and i have no idea what happened. yes..i read that thread and thought it was so odd that the eyes were also gone. they are not in the cage. i was thinking that like how birds always peck the eyes out. but it was eerie to see the eyes completely gone.
there is no way to get a necropsy done. the vets here send out all such things to the 'big city' 10 hours away at great expense.

so you all mostly think that she was ill? is this contagious?? im so worried for my other gliders.
the new male wouldnt have killed her with too much biting and persistence? she had such a big wound on the back of her neck....i could see the muscle.
i wanted to add that they had not received any crickets/mealworms/bugs for the past week. they havnt had crickets for at 6 months (they dont really like them) and the last mealworms they had were live and fat and wriggly

I called on the big guys (Australian Zoo/Australian Marsupial Society) to see if they have any input about this. I'm sure hoping to hear something soon. I've made all my gliders mad at me and they are now wanting to sleep instead of getting up because I've messed with them all day worried.

I personally don't believe crickets/bugs would have anything to do with this. I have mealworm farms and buy the super mealworms also. I have also purchased the ones in a can. I've not had any problems with any of them, so far. I stopped feeding crickets cause they are so messy and stink. My gliders only ate certain parts and left most of the crickets as waste.

I would clean the cage completely down and wash all pouches, toys, etc. Disinfect all dishes or replace them (and the pouches too) just in case something is in there contagious.

Bluz, my heartfelt sympathies go out to you over your loss.
It's such a shame that someone who could furnish at least SOME answers for you would be so FAR AWAY. It would help you better understand what happened.

I wouldn't trust Loco with another female & DEFINITELY have a couple tests run. Ask your vet if they could do a "litmus paper" test on his urine to see if there's any clues to this mystery there.

Big hugs of comfort.....

Not to disagree with everyone, but if the mating wounds were bad enough, yes, it could have killed her. Or weakened her enough the others finished the job. And, unfortunately, yes they could have started to consume the body. In the wild, leaving a dead body would attract predators, as well as disease, and that is nature's way of keeping the colony safe. The only way to find out for certain what killed her would be to have the vet do a necropsy-even then it may come down to an educated guess if nothing stands out as obvious, unfortunately. It would be a good idea to have your others vet checked, urine and fecals run, just to be sure there wasn't something else she might have had, that they may have contracted. I agree that he shouldn't be with another female if he is that agressive in mating-some gliders just are that way, and normally don't change.

Also, usually it isn't recommended to breed rescues..a few main reasons is that in many cases, rescues have been through a lot, and breeding is an additional stress on them. Also, their former diets/ may not have left their bodies in shape to support a pregnancy, or there may be genetic issues-often a rescues background is sketchy at best. These can result in rejected or cannibalized joeys. Also, past the age of 7 for a female it isn't usually recommended to breed because of the stresses involved on an aging body. Gliders that live to 10 years or older are really the exception, and not the rule. Average range seems to be around 5-8 years. Congrats on your 12 year old-that is truly remarkable. If you really want babies, I would start out with unrelated joeys from a reputable breeder, or possibly an established younger breeding pair (unrelated)-they are frequently for sale-you may want to check out the ads section. There is a higher incidence of joey deaths in some colony situations, also-due to a number of factors.

I am very sorry for your loss.

thanks xfilefan for your input. i wasnt aware of the not breeding past 7 years, since she seemed stillso fulll of life, So maybe she was just getting too old.Now I'm worried for my other neutered gliders who are 12 and 6.The male (Loco) was rescued at about 7 months age, he was being feed BML. The female I rescued was also being fed a really good diet (BML with goodies) as I asked the owners. They just didnt have time for them anymore. Where I live, gliders are very uncommon and frequently sell for $150 and up, which is expensive for me. So its hard to find even an unproven breeding pair. I dont even know where to look for a local breeder, i doubt there are any.

THANKS for alll your advice and kind words. It actually does help!! I thought i was being silly posting here but it takes a glider lover to understand glider loss. I will get my other gliders tested, hopefully vets can do it.

PS where is the ads section? or do you mean in my local paper

We have the Classified forums that contain Glider Ads and Glider Things.

Yes, they can live 15 years+. I currently have one glider who is between 9 and 10 years old. Charlie's PacMan lived 15 years 4 months. But sadly, average age is 5-8. Proper diet is essential to the long life of gliders as is proper care, cage cleanings, safe pouches, even keeping the toilet lids in the house down (sadly many many gliders die from drowning in toilets). The most important thing you can do for your gliders is to read read read and learn the ins and outs of caring for them and to make informed decisions about their diet and care. Be "in tune" with your glider so that you can recognize early on when there is a problem (this is something that is learned from experience) with the glider's health (like hissing while peeing could mean a UTI).

This is why it is important to ask even the "dumb" questions. We all learn from them.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your little girl. It sounds like your male is a very agressive mater. I would recommend having him neutered as this will reduce his agression (not to mention his scent). I would not risk putting him with another female. I have one that caused a nasty mating wound on the female. She went through so much to heal and recover the infections she got from the wound. He was neutered and they now live happily together with no problems. Had he not been neutered, I would not have been able to leave them together for her own safety.

Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.
