I have sat here and read and read about the many modifications in the diets, from sheilas to zookeepers to the BML, so my question to all is how much do you know??

I have tried to put out the info as well as others have here, and I still see the same things..
so now my questions are ..
what is the zookeepers diet?
how is it supposed to be used with the BML?
what is the difference in the zookeepers and the BML,
under what conditions can they be used together?
how much is known about the other diets short of what one or two people tell you
How is sheilas diet differerent than the BML? (how is it judies diet??)
what are some of the special rules concerning briskys, and exotic nutrition?
what is really known about pretty pets glider food?
what is known about glider grub?
what is supreme blend?
outside of elwins diet which diet is the closest to a fresh food diet that is balanced?
what modifications can be made to the BML, that does not throw it out of balance?
what is the purpose of nutri-glider?
what is the purpose of glideraid?
what is the purpose of glider booster?
What is the ensure diet? and what is it used for ?
does it really matter what vitamins and calcium supplement are used?

everyone wants choices, but how much and how far are people willing to go to just give choices? Do the choices have to be healthy? or is it just important they have them? after all, gliders lives depend on the advice given..

This wasn't a thread about whether or not to use the BML diet and whether or not there are other good diets out there (which of course there are). I'll take a gamble at what I know... Bourbon's corrected me before and I expect she'll do it again.

what is the zookeepers diet? Zookeeper's diet is the Suncoast diet, which feeds Zookeepers Secret as a staple in conjunction with fruits, veggies, insects, and Vionate/RepCal without D3 as a vitamin supplement.
how is it supposed to be used with the BML? I don't think a staple should be fed with the BML but ZKS could be used as a snacking food during the daytime, provided it does not cause the glider to avoid parts of the BML diet.
what is the difference in the zookeepers and the BML,
under what conditions can they be used together?
ZKS is a staple containing, among other things, peanuts... it's sold by companies. BML is a complete diet plan utilizing ingredients found in most US grocery stores. They really shouldn't be used together unless one's glider is up during the day for a snack, as said above.
how much is known about the other diets short of what one or two people tell you I don't think much is known about ANY diet, except for what we've been told and what we experience for ourselves. Sometimes people with extensive backgrounds - whether it be glider related or not, formal education or not - comment on diets, and that often carries more weight than the comments of the common owner of 2-3 years. I don't believe any specific sugar glider diet has been widely accepted, and it's generally thought that most diets published in books are now outdated.
How is sheilas diet differerent than the BML? (how is it judies diet??) Not sure... I know Shelia uses specific brands but adheres to the original BML diet. Judie has changed some things and it's not the original BML diet.
what are some of the special rules concerning briskys, and exotic nutrition? Briskys can only be 10% treats, 90% pellets, according to the manufacturer.
what is really known about pretty pets glider food? I don't know. I don't like hard pelleted foods for gliders. I think Pretty Pets is the food that was found to be the same as juvenile iguana food.
what is known about glider grub?
whay is supreme blend?
I don't know.
outside of elwins diet which diet is the closest to a fresh food diet that is balanced? I'm unaware of another fresh food diet that doesn't use a staple or is strict in its supplements like Elwin's diet. The Caroline McPherson diet is fairly balanced, it uses cat food as a staple and foods naturally varied in vitamins (and high in calcium) as its supplements.
what modifications can be made to the BML, that does not throw it out of balance? Blending it in a different order, icing with applesauce (given that you account for that applesauce in other parts of the diet)... umm, running out of time.
what is the purpose of nutri-glider? I haven't come across nutri-glider before.
what is the purpose of glideraid? Good for dehyrated gliders or as a treat
what is the purpose of glider booster?
What is the ensure diet? and what is it used for ? Ensure diet is designed by Darcy's owner, supposed to put weight on ill gliders.
does it really matter what vitamins and calcium supplement are used? It doesn't matter, as long as your glider is getting the right balance of vitamins and minerals. Obviously some supplements are going to be way off for a glider. Most people do not know whether their glider is getting the right balance, which is why we rely on more experienced people and the diets they've designed and tested.

Ok since my name is mentioned here I will respond. Judie's version of the BML or my version because do mine a little different than Judie because I found that out later after I had her diet that it was a little different is this:

BML Recipe less 2 ounces of the yogurt juice
Add 2 ounces of the cranapple juice instead
1 jar sweet potato stage 2 if making a single batch and
stage 3 if making a double batch
Once a week I offer 1 tsp of yogurt or cottage cheese in addition to the BML.
I am taking out calcium plus protein by not adding the whole container of yogurt juice and adding some back in with the sweet potato plus the yogurt once a week. Also, the sweet potato has other nutrients that are added.
All of the rest of the recipe is the same. There is the same amount of liquid, just different nutrients.
I like this recipe better because the gliders like it better. There is never much waste and it mixture is sweeter tasting and I think that is why they like it. It also makes more solid cubes which makes it easier to pop out of the trays. I transferred a glider from Edmund to the SGGA last year that had had a UTI and had just gotten off the Baitril. He was finicky because he had lost a lot of weight and had just left his home of two years to come to me for the transfer. For three nights I tried the original version of BML and he just nibbled. I stopped at Judie's on the way to the SGGA and spent the night. I brought my own BML and he wouldn't touch it that night. Too much moving around I guess. Judie was making a fresh batch and said, "Let him try my version". She put a crock of it in his cage and he came running out of the pouch and gobbled it up. I was sold then. Judie had been feeding her gliders that version for a year. I have fed all of mine that version for a year now and everyone is happy. There is not a lot of difference, and the vitamins are still the same.

Not sure of this or what the point is...but the BML that is fed to my gliders is as pointed out. It is the same thing as BML diet plan.

The yogurt is added just like what was given to the Canadians as they are unable to purchase the Gerber Baby Juice with yogurt.

Vitamins....are the same as is the calcium.

One small stage two sweet potatoe, squash, applesauce or pears is added. Now divide that by thirty sevings....I do not see what all the fuss is about.

Personally....my gliders will not eat any BML that has one teaspoon of Herptivite per batch. It has taken me a year and half just to get them close to 2/3 of a teaspoon and at that rate it will be another six months or longer befor they will eat 1 teaspoon of Herptivite in one batch.

My gliders age from six and half years oop. right down to newborns. Their diet has always been the BML except for my very first three gliders who were changed to the BML diet plan at around 2 1/2 years oop. The BML Mix itself has changed several times in the years that I have been feeding it and the last major change was the addition of the Herptivite multi vitamin. Up to that point...as a breeder...all of my gliders were on a multi vitamin and had been for over two years befor the introduction of the Herptivite. Thus the problem of switiching to Herptivite has been difficult due to the very bitter taste that the Herptivite gives to the BML mix. The sweet juices used instead of just apple juice along with the small 2 oz. jar of sweet potato or squash, applesauce or pears seems to mask the bitter taste but not completly when the full dose of herptivite is used.

By the way...all of the BML that was made for the SGGA....was made as Bourbon instructed. And the left overs...was given to Tammy Walker a week later.... as my gliders as usual refused to eat it and it seemed a pity to just pitch it.

diet plan that I pass out to my clients...is the orig. BML diet plan found on Bourbon's site. If one goes to my web site...I have the BML linked to the care page.

As to Judie's BML...it is the BML diet plan except for the one jar of 2 oz of sweet potoato, squash, applesauce or pears. Look at it this way...most owners give treats to their gliders...and ones uaually not so healthy. My gliders get a little bit of sweet potato, squash, applesauce or pears...and it is healthy even though it is in the BML mix.

And Bourbon...you might try going to Sheila's web site...the forumla was corrected some time back as I contacted Sheila befor the SGGA and to my surprise it did have the correct amount of vitamins. I meant to tell you this befor the SGGA but things have a way of slippin away and I forgot to mention it to you.

I actually use the original BML with the exception of changing juices on occasion (generally to white grape juice) and adding on jar of stage three sweet potatoes to a triple batch. I was given a incorrect recipe for BML when I first switched over and when I tried to get the guys to go over to the original, they would never eat it. I've also found that the rescues I take in, take to the BML with the added sweet potato much more readily, so it is easier to make it all the same. Like Sheila stated, another benefit is that it does make the BML come out of the ice trays easier. I've tried the zookeepers secret as a daytime snack and for traveling, but my guys don't seem to cotton to it to well.

Pretty pets was tested by the ISGA and found to be juvenile iguana food. Its seems that they did not even attempt to modify the formula but simply pasted a sugar glider on the front. As to why.... Well the almighty dollar reigns supreme unfortunately. The store that sells this product may not be aware of its origins.

Pretty pets
