OK, I just bought a steam cleaner as I can't fit the cage in the bath tub anymore. But I'm not too sure what the process is to clean . After everything is out do you just let the steam go on everything and then wipe it down or something. Will the steam clean it well enough or do I need to use anything else??

Is there a lot of water run off and if so what do you do to keep it soaked up? Also, how long do you keep the steam on the wire? How long should it take to do a 5X2X2 properly?

Sorry for all the silly questions... I'd just like to have an idea of what I'm supposed to do before I attempt it tonight. I've never had a steam cleaner before (yet another piece of equipment especially for the gliders )

There is no water run off. Mine has a wire brush attachment I use to help get the bars clean. I just scrub the cage with the wire brush and steam. Then wipe down with damp rag. You have the same size as me it takes me about a half hour to do.

LOL – I got a steam cleaner just for the cages too…..lol… I have the Big Hex cage as the main cage and it will not eve fit out of the room it is in… I steam clean the cages about once a month, I take everything out, put the babies in their pouch in the travel cage, anything that can go in the washer goes there, if it can go in the dishwasher it goes in, other stuff goes in the tub, pull out trays and wheels ect….. then I like to do an initial wipe down with the Clorox wipes, I get the steamer heated up and then as I steam I am also wiping down with a damp cloth… you will find your rhythm in time!

Thank you Karen & John.

sounds like it should be straight forward , and I do have a wire attachment and many others too.

Will the wire attachment scratch off the pvc coating, or is that stuff sturdy???

It is good to know that there won't be water everywhere, I was worrying about that . It sounds like it will be faster than when I done the smaller cage in the bath... that is great , and I can use the machine for other things too!!!!!!

I got a Scuncii one.... I have no idea if it's good or not, but I've read here that people love the steam cleaners. I'm sure with the temp's the steam gets up to it will clean and kill any bacteria etc.

I t doesn't take the pvc of the cage.Yes it does take the sticky stuff of the cage.Just hold the steam on for an extra few seconds then rub with the brush.I never move my cages out of the room they are in. Mine are way to big to be moving. So I just move them to the middle of the room.

I bought a little Shark steam cleaner and I have to say that I was not a bit impressed. Maybe the heavyduty ones work a lot better but I find it just as easy and quicker to use a sponge and some water. The Shark is going back to the store! Good luck.

Sort of in the same vein... what about those pressure cleaners that also spray soap? Are those safe as long as you rinse the cage off super well?

I'm thinking of buying one...

Thanks so much!

I had a nice long chat with MysticAngel last week about steam cleaners, and hers is a McCulloch MC-1275, I believe. Of course, I am one of "those" people, and I have to research EVERYTHING, so I went into research mode: and if money were no object, I'd get a Desiderio in a heartbeat Why buy the bug when you can buy THE BEAST"? But that one is a DREAM machine... and at close to $1,300 - it's not in my budget.

I checked out all of the portable ones (I want more than just a cage cleaner), and after reading all the "stuff" Mystic (Tonya) is "right on" in choosing the McCulloch. I'm about to order one on pay day. It's right around $100.00; it has a 12-foot cord, and the temp heats to about 200 degrees F (enough to kill any germs I'd be expecting to find), and if I remember right, it can steam clean for about an hour). That's what I'm going to get!

Thanks, Tonia, that's right! And they had it listed on sale for $99.99 (shipping is minimal, but I was looking for FREE shipping). Still, though they charge for shipping, it's STILL less than the cost of a steamer with free shipping at other sites, by about $20-$30 (from what I could find).

Here's the link: the MC 1275. I just ordered mine!

I don't have a steam cleaner, but I do have a clothes steamer. It just occured to me that I could use it to clean the cage. Do steam cleaners have pressure behind their steam? Or are they basically the same thing? I'll tell you...that steam gets HOT! It might work...

Gosh, I can't say. I have never used one on a cage. My guess is that it would certainly loosen things up - and that alone would save a lot of time. If I can remember, I'll post up how my new McCulloch does, if there is interest.

I have a clothes steamer and a steam cleaner, my cleaner definitely has more pressure, the clothes steamer just lets the steam ‘roll’ or ‘billow’ out, the cleaner has more of a pressure push behind it for sure… at least mine does…

I forgot to post and say how my first steam clean went . It took a few minutes to figure it all out but once I got rolling I thought it was great. I just steamed and wiped sections. I then finished off with a quick wipe down with the clorox wipes. It felt good to think that most of the bacteria stuff should have been killed with the heat. I thought it was a fast way to clean compared to soaking then scrubbing then rinsing it all in the shower.

Highly recomended... plus it can be used all over the house for other things .

Also... It breaks down all the sticky hard to get off stuff really fast and gets it out of the corners really well.
