My poor Brodie has developed a sinuse infection. Late Saturday night he started sneezing. By sunday, his face was starting to swell up. Not localized like an abscess, but a diffused swelling. He was taken into the vets office and is now on 2 different types of antibiotics, Clindamiacin (sp?) and Sulfatrim as well as taking torbuteral for pain management. We should hopefully see some improvement by Wednesday, if not, he will be going back in for x-rays of his little head. Keep my little guy in your prayers, I want him to have a happy and healthy Christmas this year and not feel yucky.

OH, I forgot to mention that he also has some drainage out of his nose, but his eyes do not seem to be involved (still bright eyed and alert) and he is eating well. The vet also checked his upper teeth and they do not appear to be involved in any way.

Aww poor little guy! hug2 I will be praying for a speedy recovery for little Brodie!

When one of mine had a cold the vet suggested taking him in the bathroom with a hot shower running for about 15 min a day, also getting a humidifier. You may want to ask your vet if that would help clear him out too. dunno I don't think I've ever heard of a glider getting a sinus infection before.

Thank you all for your good thoughts for Brodie. Erin, he is NOT the first glider to get a sinus infection tho. Xfilefan's Riker had a very severe one that went into his bones when she first had him. According to Jen, it took a combination of 3 medications given for 3 months straight to clear it up at that point. Hopefully Brodies infection will not get anywhere near that bad and will clear up much more quickly. I did speak with her on the phone after Brodies diagnosis and his swelling is very similar to what Riker had.

Actually, sinus infections in gliders are one of the main causes of facial abscesses. My Cricky had a chronic sinus infection that took several months to get rid of. The last abscess he had, the vet was finally able to get a fluid sample to send out for C&S which was the trick to finally get rid of it thumb Turned out he had a really bad staph sinus infection which was only responsive to a very specific, specially made antibiotic. Hopefully Brodie's will heal up without all the nonsense wink

I really hope so Suz. Right now the infection is diffused throughout the entire side of his face. it hasn't condensed into an abscess. I hope we caught it soon enough that it doesn't.....I truely loathe abscesses.

Well the vet had hoped for some indication that the meds were starting to work by today. But little Brodie is still very swollen and is still sneezing. So I took him back in to the vets for an x-ray. We could definately see that there was some kind of infection along the right hand side of his face, but at this time it is disorganized at this time and is diffused throughout his facial tissue so no chance right now of getting a culture. He is now on a 3rd antibiotic......baytril....in addition to the other 2. I am to check back with the vet on Monday to let them know if there is any change.
Brodie continues to be bright eyed & bushy tailed and is continuing to eat normally. Tho he is perhaps a bit sleepier.

This morning Brodies right eye was matted shut cry I washed his little face and contacted the vet. I was given permission to use opthamalic ointment that I have on hand to help keep his eye more comfortable. It was some better tonight and he was able to open it some. My poor little bear.

I have a feeling that as with the sinus infections I've gotten, sometimes things have to get worse before they get better. Hopefully with Brodie this is as "worse" as it is going to get and now he will start getting better. I just hate that my little Brodie Bear is sick over Christmas tho...... do you think that I can get an emergency message to have Santa bring him good health as his present this year?

The eye ointment seems to be working. Brodie's eye had eye boogers this morning, but wasn't matted shut and he was able to open it. He is still very swollen tho and is swatting at/scratching at his face so I know it is irritating him. He is still able to breathe fine and the sneezing is about the same as it was. He is also maintining his weight.

Brodie came up last night and helped me make dinner for everyone and while he was sneeking an advance nibble I was able to get a few pictures of his face.

Chris, like I told you on the phone, Riker's eyes gunked shut also-had to soak them open with a warm cloth a few times a day. Vaseline can make the fur around the eyes greasy and help keep them from being able to stick shut all the way until they can be cleaned off also. Riker's never condensed into an abscess-vet tried and failed to get a sample with a nasal flush (which Riker did NOT appreciate let me tell you!)--once it goes into bone long term meds are a must because of how hard it is to get the meds circulating into bony tissue-it takes time. Rikers ended up not only in his facial bones, but in his skull, which threatened his brain with infection-you've seen his x-rays from back then. Anyway-prayers for Brodie, and sending PM with the info you asked for. hug2

Also, if no improvement on meds in 3-4 days, change needs made.

K...going to have to find an old PM of ours to add on to-you're over your limit dear

I got the info.....Thanks Jen, I'll take it to my vet in the morning. As to my messages, I was close, but wasn't over my limit YET. Not sure why it wouldn't let you send a new one. Anyway, it's cleaned out now.

I took Brodie back into see the Dr this morning. He was looking a tad bit less swollen and his little eye was open 1/2 way this morning when I got him out. It's the first time since Thursday that it's been open this far. Even so after a week on meds you would have expected a little bit more improvement, and Dr Kaiser agreed. We switched his meds around and he is still taking the Clindamyacin, but is taking Clavamox and Flagyl in conjunction with it rather than the Baytril and Sulfatrim. Hopefully this combo will have more luck in erradicating the infection. I am also supposed to keep up with his eye ointment to keep his eye more comfortable. Keep your fingers crossed for my baby and pray that he is less swollen by the new year.

I took a picture of Brodie last night so you could see the difference in his face from before. His eye has started to open back up. It looks greasy because of the ointment I'm putting on it 2x a day to keep it from matting shut. I also think some of the swelling on the side of his nose has gone down. He still has a long ways to go tho & is still pretty congested.

clap That's great news Chris. Depending on the depth of the infection, would determine the time factor for the antibiotics to reach the core of the infection. It sounds like the combo change will definitely move things along faster.
Still keeping Brodie in my prayers.

The swelling in Brodies face has continued to go down. He actually has a face shaped face again on his right side. His eye has also been staying open for the most part. It did mat shut from some discharge today, but once it was washed, he was able to open it 2/3s of the way without any difficulty.
Brodie has however developed a very small abscess on his nose. It is very small.....pin head sized and kind of looked like a small pimple. He opened it up and we were able to get a little bit of discharge out of it. I believe this helped to reduce the swelling along the top of his nose. The abscess remained open all day and I was able to get more out of it when he got his meds this evening. Not lots, but every little bit helps.
He is still very stuffy tho, and is sneezing with more intensity. I believe he is in the stage of a sinuse infection where everything starts to congeal before going away. So I'm sure his little head feels like it is stuffed with glue. His nose however is staying a healthy color and is not turning significantly darker or bluish in color, so I know that even tho he sounds stuffy breathing, he is getting enough O2 for his system.

I took another photo of Brodie last night. The swelling is down dramatically and he has been keeping his eye open all the time now. His abscess filled again and when I washed his face it opened up and I was able to get some more "pus" out.....as a matter of fact, it kinda exploded. It's not a huge abscess so I wasn't able to get out lots, but every tiny little pinhead sized amount of pus is that much less that is in his head.
He was very stuffy yesterday morning/afternoon, but by the evening he was sounding much better (my steamer had stopped working during the morning and once I got it up and running again, it seemed to help). Today he sounded very good, and no pus came out when I washed his face this morning....not to say some won't come out later, but nothing for now. He continues to be in good spirits and was running on his wheel last night before I left for work.
You can see the little "pit" in his nose where the abscess is located. You will also notice that it looks greasy around the abscess....this is because I just finished putting antibiotic ointment on the affected area.

Brodies face looks pretty much normal now....if you discount the lack of fur around his eye, and the scabs on his nose from his abscess....and a new one across the front of his nose (I'm assuming he scratched himself washing his face....either that or he bumped into something). He is still stuffy, sometimes quite severely stuffy, and other times almost not at all....I never know if he'll be snuffling or breathing normally. I have contacted my vet to see if there is any kind of a decongestant that a glider can take. He is doing some research to see if there is something safe out there that will help. In the meantime, I've got a steamer running near the cage to help him out.

I wonder if it would be safe to put vapor rub (Vicks) in the steamer. I use to do that with my son when he was little and stuffy.

I thought about that Teresa, but thought the odor might be too strong for too long of a time and didn't really want to risk it. I did let Brodie smell the vicks container tho.

I think Brodie is feeling better tonight. He had me worried earlier because he just wouldn't settle, and was very stuffy. He'd climb around for a bit and then hang on his pouch and snort/snuffle then he would climb some more. I kept trying to either get him to settle into my bra or in his pouch, but he kept insisting he wanted to be up and about. Now his climbing is getting stronger and he is even making small hops. Also instead of walking on the wheel, he is actually starting to get a little bit of speed while on it. Not tons, but more than he's had in a while.

OMG.....I don't know what is going on.....Brodie was up playing last night and this morning about 2 hours ago I had him up to eat a little snack and he seemed like he was doing pretty good, but I just got him out and he had blood around his eye and his nose was bloody and there was blood coming out of the abscess on his nose. He was gasping and breathing through an open mouth. While on me, he seemed to have some sort of seizure and leaped off onto the floor. I've got a call into my vet, but they are not usually there on Sat and are having to call to find out what to do. He has calmed down somewhat and is no longer gasping like he was and I was able to get the blood washed off but I'm really scared for my baby.

Chris, put a warm compress on his face/nose. It sounds like the abscess has ruptured. Is he still on antibiotics?

I hope that you can get someone to see him today. If it is a rupture, his sinus cavity possibly will need to be irrigated.

My prayers are with your precious baby. hug2

I got his face washed up with warm water and he seems to be doing better now. He is not breathing/gasping/gagging any more and has calmed down. He seems more alert now as well. Still waiting to hear from the vet.
And yes Linda, he is still on his antibiotics and pain meds.

That's good news Chris. Until you can get him in, keeping that area warm will allow the infection to move through faster.

I just got back from the vets with Brodie. Dr Kaiser thought he was looking well and that the bloody nose this morning was just a result of his sinus infection....maybe something breaking loose, or dry sinus membranes. The blood from around his eye appear to have come from some small scratches. It's possible that Brodie scratched himself when washing his face...he could have scratched off the scab on his abscess at the same time. Dr Kaiser also listened to Brodie's lungs and said that they were clear and the infection was not moving into a pneumonia/broncial infection and that it is just a really nasty head cold right now. I am to give him his torb 3x a day rather than 2x. Apparently the narcotic effects of the medication will help with any coughing/sneezing by relaxing his muscles. We are also starting him on benadryl to hopefully dry out his sinuses. HIs antibiotics are also continuing and will continue for quite a while.

Brodie had a nosebleed off and on throughout the day yesterday. It seems to have abated now, but I am keeping a close eye on him. He is currently in my shirt sleeping and has been there all night long. It doesn't bother him that he is at work with me except when I use the stapler. He doesn't seem to care for that much. I brought him in with me, so I could keep an eye on him as he totally zoned out for about 4-5 hours after he got his dose of benadryl. Kinda scary, but he does seem to be breathing a bit easier now. I think I may cut back on it a touch and see if that works better. I also wanted to make sure that he is eating and staying hydrated. At this time he is slightly dehydrated. I did the pinch test on him and while his scruff did go back down it went down much slower than I would prefer. Since I didn't have any pedialite at work with me I mixed some honey with water and applejuice and got him to drink some of that (he refused plain water and applejuice) He is also drinking approximately 2cc of his HPW mixture every few hours, so I know he is getting some fluids into his system.

I am hopefully optomistic that Brodie is feeling better tonight. He had his 3rd dose of Benadril and it has really seemed to make a difference. This morning I cut his dose in 1/2 and he didn't react in any way to the amount. I upped it to 3/4th of the original dose and it made him very very relaxed. Not in a blue funk like he was last night, but just very relaxed and kind of sleepy. I'll talk to the vet in the am to see what dose he wants me to use. Brodies nasal drip has nearly stopped and he is sounding much less stuffy today and his nose bleeds have nearly stopped. The only time I saw a sign of one was when he was taking his meds and shaking his head to clear his mouth of the taste. Then I just saw the barest hint. I cleaned up his face tonight also. He had quite a bit of dried blood over the area where his abscess was. I managed to get most of it off (there was quite a bit around the outside of the wound) and applied a generous amount of triple antibiotic ointment over the abscess itself. It looks clean and now I just want to encourage it to heal.
Brodies appetite also came back with a vengance tonight. He inhaled 4 cc of HPW mix in one sitting and then an hour later polished off another 2 cc. I think he would have ate more, but I only brought 6 cc to work with me. I figured (based on his appetite the last few nights) that it would be plenty and he would take 2cc every couple of hours. So there I was with 4 1/2 hours to go before I head home & no more food for a hungry glider. I offered him a little bit of a muffin and he latched onto it like he was starving and scarfed it down. I offered yogurt a little bit later, but he didn't care for the flavor and refulsed to take more than a couple of licks....after he accidentally stepped on it and realized it was food. After that, he was happy to go back into my shirt for another nap.
Here's hoping that his appetite, and strength continue to grow and that his abscess and nose stop bleeding.

Brodie is continuing to do well. A bit more sneezy tonight, but all in all very good........
tho there is nothing like having the glider who is not supposed to be seen by guests decide while you are checking someone in that it is time to come to the top of the shirt and say hi and then pee down your chest.....all while you are trying to play it cool & pretend that nothing happened.

WooHooo Brodie Bear has gained back ALL the weight he lost while he was ill. He has been inhaling HPW like it is going out of style. Last night when he was at work with me, he also ate some strawberry/mango yogurt (only off my finger....can we say spoiled?) and a few licks of mango in addition to 11cc of his HPW mix. I know it is more than what he should get of it, but with him ill I'm not limiting his intake. At least it's something he wants to eat and boy does he want to eat it. He sees the syringe (and somehow he knows when it's mix & when it's meds) and he grabs onto it with both hands and then his tongue starts lapping at about 60mph. He can slurp down an entire syringe (1cc) in less than a minute. Tonight will be the first night that he will be back in with his family for the entire night and hopefully he will eat on his own without Mom having to feed him his dinner. Hopefully he won't go into bra withdrawl tho since he's spent the last 5 nights down my shirt getting fed.

Brodie didn't want to eat on his own last night. He was sacked out sleeping with his family. when I would get him out, he would eat some, but wasn't interested in eating on his own. As a result he did drop some weight again. However today when I got up to give him his 3pm meds he was up running on the wheel and playing in the cage. He bounced over to the door and wanted to come out and run around on Mom for a little while. He had his old Brodie bounciness back when he was out. He was a little stuffy, but not bad at all. It was so nice to see the usual Brodie spark in his eyes and to have him kick into his high gear once more.

I think he was trying to tell me that he was happy to become a "day glider" if he could keep going to work with me at night LOL

Glad to hear that little Brodie is feeling better. He likes that one on one attention from mom.

Little Brodie Bear is definately feeling better. He stayed home with his family last night while I went to work and I came home to find him up running on his wheel. He bounced over to me with that Brodie brash look in his eyes. It was so good to see that spark of fire and fearlessness back. I showed him to my Mom who hadn't seen him in a few days and she smiled and said "He looks normal!" and he most definately does..... eyes bright and wide open, ears perked, head up and alert....the only thing marring the normalness of his face is the scabs where his abscess was and a few tiny scabs around his eye still. He was also snuffling less today than he was yesterday. Still some, but not as much. His weight is back down some tho. frown But with his increased activity and him not being with me to eat every few hours overnight, I guess it's not too surprising. I'm going to continue to "push" the HPW when he takes his meds and offer extra treats to keep his weight where it is and hopefully put a few more grams back on.
I'm going to talk with the vet on Tuesday and find out when I should start weaning him off the benadril....I hate to start that until the sniffles are totally gone, but it shouldn't (fingers crossed) be too much longer. The meds will take a bit longer. I've been told with severe sinus infections that to prevent a reoccurance that meds need to be continued for several weeks after symptoms disapear, so we are still looking at a long stint on antibiotics still, but we can deal with that easy.

Yea Chris! He is looking so much better. Knew his mommy's love would pull him through.
