I am posting this, not only in hopes of saving sugar glider lives, but the lives of other pets--and even humans! Although she was 11, Zelda passed away very suddenly--she had no signs of health problems and was playing in her cage the night before. It looked like she had a heart attack. The weird thing is that it happened to my male glider, Murry almost exactly a year ago! Like our Zelda, he passed away very suddenly, but he was a big boy so we thought it was a heart attack. Our vet couldn't find anything wrong with the two girls so we didn't think too much about it. This time, however, it was weird. Zelda was a very active glider, yet she died the same way as Murry suddenly and clinging onto the cage. I was also concerned I was missing something or doing something wrong. I took Priscilla into our vet. He gave her a clean bill of health and asked me to watch out for signs of self-mutilation and to find her another friend. He agreed it was very strange how we lost two gliders in late March a year apart--in the same manner. He asked if we ran our house on gas--we do. He asked if my husband and I had headaches and fatigue. We not only did we both have headaches and fatigue, but I've been having other strange health issues--including unexplained fevers and artheritis--even hallucinating. Turns out our old gas dryer (now replaced) was leaking. It wasn't a problem when we had the windows open in the fall, spring, and summer, but it built up during the winter which is why Murry and Zelda both passed in mid-March. My vet said this has happened to 2 or 3 of his other clients. I'm thankful we found this out, because we could have become more sick...or worse... The leak is fixed, and we are changing the way things are done here. We are having our house checked yearly by a professional--we had one monoxide detector in our basement, but it never went off (we're buying new ones to go in every bedroom and the basement). We will also be opening the windows several times on warmer winter days. Though I and my husband are feeling much better since we had our leak fixed, I wish we had known this two years ago. We'd still have our little darlings with us, and our last little girl wouldn't be alone. Please pass this on to other pet owners. http://www.epa.gov/iaq/pubs/coftsht.htmlhttp://www.carbon-monoxide-poisoning.com/http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/carbonmonoxidepoisoning.html

Oh I'm so sorry to hear about your sweet baby passing. But thank you for posting about it. You may very well have saved the lives of who knows how many pets and maybe people. Carbon monoxide poisoning is not one of the hazards high on our radar to talk about here, but it obviously should be. I'm not sure if Lucy is still keeping the death database up (I haven't heard anything about it lately) but I'll see if I can find out. If she is, it would be helpful for you to fill out the form. If I find it, I'll link you to it. If somebody else knows where it is or finds it before me, please post. **edited: Well that was easy, lol. It's on a sticky at the top of the Real Stories forum. Here's the link to death database

[:"green"]I'm so sorry for your loss . My heart goes out to you... : Thank you for posting about this. I never would have made the connection with gliders, but you obviously have a very savvy vet. My sister-in-law almost died a few years ago from CO poisoning. It's a very dangerous, silent threat that lurks in many homes and people are totally unaware. CO detectors in bedrooms & basements are very crucial for catching CO before it becomes deadly. Also, annual check-ups on gas furnaces (that include a professional CO check) are very important, too. Things like cracked heat exchangers are never noticed by homeowners, but can be caught during a professional check-up. If you decide to get these furnace check-ups done, make sure you hire the true "professionals" and not the cheapest one in the book because otherwise, they may not actually check everything they're supposed to (like the CO level). Also, for an extra fee, you can usually get them to check the other gas appliances in the home, such as hot water tank, gas dryer, etc.

Thank you so much for the heads up on gas.
My deepest sympathy to you.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming WOOOO HOOOO, WHAT A RIDE!!!

I was just mentioning to a friend earlier today about the danger of CO poisoning---she was talking about using a kerosene heater b/c of the high price of her natural gas bill! "If you're going to use kersone, for Pete's sake invest the $40 to get a CO detector!"
Carbon monoxide is a DEADLY gas that's so hard to detect without help from an instrument!
My heart goes out to you for your losses.

Wow! I'm truly lost for words! Thank you everyone for the kindness and support. I hope this will keep many other gliders (and their humans) healthy. An update - Priscilla, my last glider, has been moved into our bedroom. We are keeping a close eye on her and giving her lots of extra one-on-one time. She was very clingy at first, but now is very moody and nippy. She will not come out on her own and cries in her sleep. I'm worried. She's pulled the fur from her tail. I really hope it won't go further than that. The vet said to just keep an eye on her, and bring her back if she starts self-mutilating. Fortuantely, it looks like she is getting a friend next week. I'm thankful she won't be alone anymore, but wish I had more time to grieve. If I knew she'd be okay with only human company, I'd wait for a while before bringing home another pet. We've lost mice and rats--and it's never easy to lose a pet (no matter how long they live)--but this is so much harder. I really should have been thinking about what to do since my gliders were seniors to begin with, but they were so healthy it really caught me off guard. I didn't expect this to happen for another 5 years.

To reiterate what everyone else has said...thank you so much for the heads up on this. This is why they call this the "silent killer"...no way you could have known or anticipated it, and gliders being so much smaller than people they just couldnt' fight it. I'm so sorry for your loss. It sounds like Priscilla is suffering from depression. Spending a lot of extra time with her can help (as much as possible, have her with you-watching TV, doing chores, whatever)..you will become her comfort zone. I know you said you are already doing this, but if she's still overgrooming, increase her time any way possible. Also, extra treats right now won't hurt either, and may help distract her from her grief-along with helping her know you're there for her. You could also get her some new toys, so she has something new and interesting to keep her mind off her loss. Extra tent time as well (even if you can't be in there with her)..which will provide a change of scenery. Even put bonding blankets or an old t shirt in her cage/ pouches for her (like beginning bonding)-to provide a comforting scent when you can't be there. But the more you can be there for her, the less severe her depression is likely to get (pulling her tail hair is an expression of her grief, which is a form of stress..usually that won't escalate to SM, but keep an eye on her anyway). Main thing otherwise is to make sure she keeps eating and drinking normally...if the depression gets severe enough, she may stop, essentially trying to starve herself. Hand feed periodically throughout the day, plus treats, to make sure she's getting the nutrition she needs. Again, tho...I'm sorry for the loss of your babies.

Jen,
Thank you for the advice. Priscilla is doing much better now. She's actually coming out on her own and starting to play again at night. She's become less moody during her one-on-one time.
I think it's really helped we moved her into a new cage into the bedroom, too. All the changes have given her incentive to explore.
I feel a little better now myself, too. It helped that we had a memorial service for Zelda and Murry this weekend in my mom's garden in the woods. I want to find something to put out there in their memories--maybe a little statue or an engraved stone.

I am so sorry that you had to learn about it this way That just breaks my heart for you. However it is good to know because I know that I personally never even thought about it effecting our babies. While my family does not use gas in our home, a lot of my friends do and I will certainly give them a heads up. Thanks for sharing

Update: Priscilla has been overgrooming still, but it seems to have tapered. The bottom of her tail and the tip are bald. She has not injured herself, but I'm hoping once she has a buddy she'll let her fur grow back.
Yesterday, we brought home a friend for her. Her name is Beignet and she is beautiful and mellow, but HUGE (anyone know if there is a Weight Watchers for sugar gliders? ). I have not introduced them yet, but their cages are side-by-side and there was a lot of activity last night (no crabbing--just two curious girls). We will be very gradual with introductions as the girls are adults and there is a huge size difference between them. I really hope this will help Priscilla.
