I would not give chia seeds to your gliders, I use them myself, 1/4 teaspoon is like that 5 hour engery drink, for that extra boost when you are run down and need to keep going, like a natual speed, I made the mistake of putting 1/2 a tablespoon on my coffee, I was going for 3 days lol. the native american used them on long tracks, 1 tablespoon would be nourtshment for 24 hours,
Please DO NOT! give them to your babies

If you try putting a spoonful of Chia seeds in a glass of water and leaving it for half an hour, the glass won't look like it has seeds or water in it, but an almost solid gelatin. This gel-forming reaction is due to the soluble fiber in the Chia. Researchers believe this same gel-forming process takes place in the stomach. The gel that is formed in the stomach, creates a physical barrier between carbohydrates and the digestive enzymes that break them down, which slows the conversion of carbohydrates into sugar. One of the exceptional qualities of the Chia seed is its hydrophilic properties. It has the ability to absorb more than 12 times its weight in water. Definitely not a food for suggies. I can see their tummies swelling up and them having an intestinal blockage. It sounds like a fantastic diet aid tho! I think I'll try to find some today!

I have been useing chia for years, 1/4 of a teaspoon crushed will wake you up and give you energy, it has to be crushed or like any whole nut the body can't use it, you can chew them or crush and put in coffee, but I would not use more than 1/4 teaspoon at a time or it will make you shakeie,

I just ordered some. I guess I'll have to put them in my spice grinder. Thanks, Sameeee! I didn't know they couldn't be ingested whole. I'm very interested in them. From what I've read, they have many benefits for the human body. Just not suggies! LOL!

I keep a small contaner in my pocket, when I start feeling run down I chew some and I am ready to go again, you can use up to a tablespoon a day but like I said no more than 1/4 teaspoon at a time, even at that small amount you don't feel hungry after chewing them,

Richard I voiced my conserns on the CSGA Fourms about Chia seeds but I'll post it again here.
From what I've read chia seeds have a great deal of healthy omega-3 fatty acid in it something like 2.5 grams per table spoon. Omega-3s are well known to reduce inflammation and help the body reduce some of the effects of aging. But when chia seeds are placed in water or a liquid they swell to create a gel and this can happen in your stomach which can quickly lead to blotting in glider's tiny stomachs. And it is believe that this gel also restricts the absorption of calories which for me would be a no no as Glider's don't really eat a whole much in consideration so everything that they consume is important and needs to be beneficial.
I personally would say no, do not feed your glider chia seeds

I agree with Erich, also they have an incorrect calcium to phosphorus ratio (18% calcium to 27% phosphorus I believe). Seeds and nuts are not a good choice of food for Suggies as the calcium to phosphorus ratios are incorrect and they are also high in fat. There are better choices for antioxidants and omegas such as blueberries, goji berries, acai berries, papaya, etc.

I will be the odd man out here, I fed chia gel (already soaked in water, but not sprouted) to my gliders for over 2 years. No harm done, they actually really liked it. The only reason I stopped was because the supplier I was using went up and chia became insanely expensive around here for a while, but I have been recently considering starting it up again. I do agree with NOT feeding un-gelled chia to your gliders, as it will very likely swell in their stomach.

If we never loved, then maybe we would never feel pain. Love anyway. It's worth it.

Thank you Gretchen, I've been looking for quite sometime as to see if anyone feeds the gel. You would by chance happen to have a nutritional break down of it that you could e-mail be by chance?
