Ok guys, i'm trying to brainstorm on some neat but not tacky things to do for my glider room. I thought this could be a neat thread to share some ideas. I'm really into interior design, so i want my room to be kinda funky, modern, and fun.

The pic attached is my first "rough draft." Just some ideas i'm tossing around in my head and seeing if i like them or dont.

My cage is shown in the left corner. My cage will be done all in the same print/colors as soon as i get it all finished. Its a very bright, colorful squares print. I didnt want to use ALL the colors of the print for the room as it would look a little insane. So i picked some colors out of the print that i thought went well together and came up with a funky design.

On the lower half of the walls, i'm thinking of making PVC frames (pictured painted purple with the new plastic fusion spray paint) with black plastic hardware cloth zip tied on. I'm going to put hooks on my walls so these simply sit on a hook. That will allow me to take them outside and wash them when they need cleaned.

For the curtains, i'm thinking long strips of alternating fabric that the gliders can climb up and play on. I may put hooks along the rod part of the curtains so that i can snap lengths of colored chain onto as well.

I do have some other things in this room as well, a chair (which i'm going to make a slip cover to match), some rubbermade containers, a table and small TV. I'm thinking i'll make myself a little armiore for the TV and possibly put some shelves in it for the junk being stored in the rubbermade containers. I want to make it cute in there, but glider proof. Nothing more annoying than trying to pry your glider out from behind objects when you stayed up too late in the first place and ready to go to bed an hour ago.... lol.

I also have vaulted ceilings in this room. I have a purple rope light that goes around the entire room at the top of the walls and also has a strand that runs across the center of the ceiling. Its a great darker color that allows me to see the kids playing, but they still feel comfortable coming out.

I like the look of the glider ceiling nets or maybe stringing colored chain across the ceiling with things hanging down... BUT, my fear is that when its time for them to go to their cage, they will figure out real quick that i'm short and cant reach them up there... I dont want to hang them lower and then not be able to walk under it without taking my head off. I was thinking maybe take one corner and make a corner net? Like a jumbo hammock net, maybe two or three of them attached to the wall 2-3ft appart vertically and have some chains hanging down from them all to connect them? That might be fun.

Anyway, i know its a challenge to make a glider room that isnt tacky with trees and a mix match of toys and items to play on. Maybe my ideas are crazy, but maybe they might get your brains working and you can come up with some better ideas to share! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumb.gif" alt="" />

Get your thinking caps on! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

note, these may not be the colors i go with for the walls... This attached pic is the print thats in the cage... I dont know that i like the orange on the wall, but i thought it would be different. I know i dont like lime green in the mix... So i'm still thinking on that one.

I don't think orange would look too bad (go vols) if it was a tan orange instead of a loud orange... Also if you hung a net from the ceiling on S hooks or rings, you could have a long handled hook to take it down when play is through (like when the clothes are hung too high in a dept store...).
You could also do a different color on the wall that may not be in the print but would compliment... like a blue or green?
What about a shelf just above the window?

Kayla, that looks great! I LOVE funky rooms. I just decorated my loft family room in lime green and bright blue and it looks great. It's not a glider room, but I wanted to make it bright and fun for the kids, because the formal living room is so blah. Anyway, I took some of the fabric that I made the valance out of and took a big square of styrofoam and stapled it to it so it was a solid block of color and hung it on the wall and it looks really funky and cool. I was thinking maybe you could use cardboard or something and do it with fleece for something else for them to climb on?

I tried doing a frame like that with PVC and zip tying the hardware cloth to it- at least with mine, the zip ties pulled through the hardward cloth and deformed it. I was also pulling it pretty tight though...

I have chain that hangs from one side of the room to the other, and toys hanging off of the chain. I like it, and while I have hit my head a few times  it's worth it IMO. I've never had a problem with them not coming down, I guess mine just aren't that ornery. I do keep a two-step stepstool in that rom just in case, though.

I was about to say I really liked the lime green and would pull that color out ( : I just painted my glider/sewing room purple and it is awesome and bright maybe you'd like that? I also love orange rooms they make you feel so happy like being at the beach. I saw someone had some cool ceiling toys I can't remember who though... I wanted some bad and my husband nixed the idea of messing up the ceiling that he had just blown for me right quick. Maybe you coul dget away w/ it though ( : ??

So, I got these nets from the army/navy surplus store - they're brand new & come in green, brown, white, or camo - you could use the white to make a detachable drop ceiling. That way, you could limit how high up they could go to play, but still utilize the ceiling space. It was only like $6 for a big sheet of the stuff & the holes were small, so there was no way a glider could fit through. Another idea is the large ceiling hammocks like Alicia (queenduck) makes - those are super cool, but they wouldn't keep the critters down unless you modified the design a bit.

I know this is going out there… but since this is like a fantasy design… <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/roflmao.gif" alt="" /> you could put the hammock, or the net like Gina described on pulleys so that is could be raised and lowered….

For the armiore, you could use the pre drilled peg board for the back of it to allow plenty of air flow (so the tv doesn't over heat) and put a plexi glass front. This would stop the gliders from peeing in the tv and also limit how much of the tv cord they have access to.

You could make bridges out of glider safe tree branches (8-10 inches long) that goes from one side of the room to the other being held up in a few spots along the way by chain or fleece vines. (I'm making one for my room out of elm).

Perhaps a wall play mat with toys attached to it and built in pockets for them to snuggle into.

Oh, and that fleece is one of my favorites. It makes such beautiful cage sets. It would make a really FUN play room!

That all sounds so fun. I've started toy decorating the glider room, but haven't gone all out like you are planning <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />.
I'll attach a pic but the room and toys change all the time. I have chains and feather boas hung from wall to wall. I have a corner hammock a little lower that the chain with a climbing ladder attaching them and pouches and toys all over. The love the et up and are always good to come back down.

Some good ideas. I wish i could use tree branches, but here in TX, if its not cedars, people dont destroy their trees. In my whole neighborhood there is ONE big pretty tree, Its an oak tree and it happens to be in my front hard. And by big, its maybe 15' tall, thats about as big as they get down here. So i'm figuring tree branches are out.

I'll have to check out the army surplous stores, beings there are a bazillion here in millitary town... I like the idea of the mesh stuff, i am sure i can use that somewhere.

My gliders are brats. When they know i'm ready to put them up, they run and hide anywhere they can. I must be alone in this??? lol. Must be nice to have well behaved kids that go back to their cage... Its not like its torture for them to be in their cage, its 6ft tall x 3ft wide x 2ft deep... So putting anything up in that ceiling really scares me. I'm only 5'3 and its 10ft at its highest point. I would have to pull out the big ladder to get them.

I was thinking though, do you think they could vertically climb plain PVC? I could hang chains or something and put a 3' piece of PVC to cover it at the top so they cant climb all the way up??

Here is my new revised edition at this point in time. I think it seems a little less busy. I put in the corner nets i was talking about and next to it is one tall mesh play wall that i'm going to hang bells on. My windows in the bedrooms are just done stupid, i have never seen such high but short windows before. Making any window treatments for them is a real challenge... But i thought if i dont do the mesh pieces on the lower half under the window, i could lengthen the curtain strips, alternating their lengths... It would give my room a little more hight and still be fun for the kids to climb.

Dancing, I LOVE your idea for the armior with the plexi door so i can still watch TV while they play. And i never thought about the peg board for the back. Great idea. Of course, my handy husband is gonna be gone for a year... But i think i can handle that one. At least he left me the good tools! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

And then, not pictured is still the play gym i would like to do in the middle. Its going to be at least 6' tall. I just really havent thought about that one yet. I was thinking to maybe make it a big rectangle shape so that i can sit my chair inside it? Then they can jump and play all around me.

I'm really not going into depth with a lot of toys, when they are out they usually like to climb and jump the most. They have all the toys they could want in their cage. So really, i'm just going to focus on giving them things to climb, platforms to rest on, and the gym will give them horizontal bars to run across.

Helen, as to the PVC frame and mesh, yes, it sounds like you pulled it too hard. I dont know about the rest of the country, but the Mesh that Lowes sells has changed 4 times since i started using it for toys a year ago. Each time it gets weaker and more flimsy. I'm hoping i can find a different brand at Home Depot today. BUT, we use PVC/mesh for "poop grates" in the bottoms of all our cages. There is a secret to getting it to work without stretching it out. But i really cant describe it, you just have to work with it a lot until you get it right.

Ok, let me know what you think of the new design! You guys want to come and help me with the kitchen next?? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/roflmao.gif" alt="" />

Kayla...I could get you some elm branches (we have tons of 30'tall elms that really need trimming! I would be willing to work out a trade (cost of postage) for some of your wonderful toys <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Also, have you considered some simple 1" x 4" shelfs around the room? Either at about the height of the top of your head or even staggered at different levels? Simple brackets to mount them.. I'm going to be doing some for my glider room. Properly poly the wood and then attach velcro to hold artificial grass on the shelf. It will be easy to remove the grass to clean them.

Or...pvc pipe on the two long sides with the mesh zip tied to them. Use brackets to mount them to the walls. (again, 1x4 or 1x6 size)
