Update & new question...Triplets Mom has diarrhea #9030

Rose appears to be getting better, as does Delta. Marvin remains unaffected.
None are dehydrated, all acting normal and eating well.
The joeys are growing and loving the BML suppliment.
The two from Grumpy's family are about the same, still very soft but formed.

Question: Has anyone else had a glider/gliders go through the stages of diarrhea like this, have it 6 days with no apparent ill effects (even to the joeys), and recover on their own?

Is this something the folks collecting information on glider diseases would like to include?

Linda, I've nothing to contribute (thankfully) on glider diarrhea. We're all praying your babies continue to improve, and especially that your triplets continue to grow strong and healthy.

Mine are runnier than usualy if I feed certain fruits. Catalope, honeydew, and watermelon are the ones I try to limit because they seem to get runny after I feed those.

I am so glad she is doing better. She has alot on her plate right now. Maybe it was just stress from the joeys!!! I hope she continues to improve and it doesn't come back!!!!

My suggestion is to check for a protozian or bacterial related illness.

And yes, it is possible for a glider to look healthy and still have runny stool...with it taking on an appearance of being better and then revert back to being not normal. Over a period of time without treatment if ill...a glider's health will deterioate.

Thanks Judie...unfortunately that's just what happened. No better today. My vet saw her again tonight and took stool and urine to run cultures and look for potozoa as well. I told her the other two gliders seem to be going through the same stages as her. The vet checked her for dehydration, which I also do (obsessively) , and she is still OK. Her activity level and appetite are still normal. She is the first one out and still going nuts in the wheel. I know this must be draining her, but it doesn't show yet. Fortunately we will know in a few days, and in the meantime she is consulting a network of exotic specialists to see if there is something to give her(and the others) in the meantime. She will let me know tomorrow.

Has this actually ever happened to you?

They have not had any fruit besides what is in the BML since this started, but it was a good thought!

My suggestion....is to have your vet contact Dr. Teresa Bradley at the Belton Animal Clinic in Belton, MO. She is very good when it comes to bacterial and protozian infections.

I have known Dr. Bradley for almost five years. She will consult with other vets who are less knowledgable and over the phone. Her clinic number is 816-331-3120. If you need her home number...then send me an email.

One of the fastest tests to do is the Cytology on the droppings. A stain is used to help identify the problem bacteria and a vet can do a fairly accurate count...including any fungus and pollen in the stool of the glider. This test can be done on the first exam and usually with results without having to send off to a lab for the traditional 3 to 4 day waiting period to determine wither or not the bacteria is good or bad.

If bacterial...more than likly all will need to be treated due to cross contamination. But if these gliders have been isolated...and you have been very carefull perhaps not.

Reply...thank you so much, Judie. I'm going to give her this info right away.
I will have to treat all of them, they are two separate family groups of six in each(one includes the triplets). They lived in the same room and shared play area. Family groups are more fun than a barrel of monkeys, but if they get sick, you've got the whole barrel!! I'll probably treat Scrattie, too, just to be safe.
