I have one who will glide 6 feet and one who for the longest time wouldnt even try. I swear she looks scared when she gets more than 3 feet off the floor! But I finally got her to do a short glide, about 2 feet or so. she actually opened up her patagium for a second! It took a long time and lots of coaxing and treats to get her to finally do it. You could try starting to teach them to jump to you on command and reward them with a treat. but start out by being INCHES away so its just a hop. Then gradually get further away.

My Elvis was stuck in a small bird cage the first 6 years of his life so he was never able to learn to glide. He will run around the floor but he can not jump or glide. He won't even climb higher than a foot off the ground unless he is in his cage then he will climb to the top.

Gliding is not something that every glider desires to do. It is like running in humans - most of us CAN, but many of us do not do so and have no desire to do so.

Gliding is not necessary for their survival in captivity, so many just do not do it. It does not mean that there is anything wrong with them, and they still can and will if they feel like it. They do not have to be taught. You do not have to worry if your gliders do not glide. Just give them enrichment opportunities that they do enjoy and that stimulate them cognitively and let them be who they are. They may decide at a later date that they want to give gliding a try.

That's funny. All my gliders glides. I have never even heard of gliders that didn't glide until now, and I've been on this forum for 8 years. LOL.

lmao! well, after 2 days of being let loose to play *supervised* in my bedroom, they have now figured out that its a pretty cool thing to do! my girl is awesome at it, but my male seems to be lacking in the "glide" department! hopefully he'll get better at it! lol

Except rarely are humans kept in such a small area that they never get the opportunity to even attempt to run. You can see how it might take awhile for someone to try running if they've never had the space to do more than walk. All of my gliders were used to rather small cages (some very small cages) and took awhile to figure out what to do in a space even as big as the tent. They wouldn't know what to do in a whole room. The few escapes we've had they've just ended up running about on the floor near their cage in confusion or the one I take with me to the kitchen all the time tried going there only to get stuck in a bag sitting on the floor. They really do have to learn how to climb and glide in a big area after only being in a cage.

I have observed that obese gliders have more difficulty gliding. However, training them to glide will help them to lose the excess weight. Denise/minkasmom showed me some ways to teach a non-gliding glider to glide. The technique that I have used with my Mareki is quite simple. I placed her on the top of a doorframe in an open doorway, then held my hands out to her, fluttering the fingers. at first, she was too scared to even reach out for my fingers. Gradually, she climbed onto my hands. The next step was to back up a couple of inches so she had to hop to my hands. Then, a couple more inches, etc. until she learned to glide! It takes a lot of patience and perseverance, but it does work!

Of my two gliders, Judah loves hopping all over the place (he hasn't bonded enough for me to try getting him to glide yet and he's still only about 11 weeks OOP). Anson on the other hand, about 13 weeks OOP, doesn't seem to like jumping. It's really funny watching him try to go to the various tree branches I put in their cage. He's like a rock climber, always trying to maintain three points of contact while moving to the next point even if it's to get to a bit of papaya or honey!
