(PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets [censored],
Hi I am Garrick and over the next ( number of minutes) I will tell you all some information on sugar gliders.
First I will start off by tell you all a little background on gliders. Sugar gliders are marsupials. They originate from Australia and New Guinea, though a lot of people assume that they are just from Australia but gliders here in America are from New Guinea. Sugar gliders in Australia are larger then the gliders in New Guinea making the gliders in New Guinea easier pets to keep in a household.
Glider
anatomy First thing you will notice is that gliders have huge eyes. It is because they are nocturnal and their big eyes help them see at night.
Next the sugar gliders have a gliding membrane that helps them glide from tree to tree in the wild. They can glide up to 150 feet from the tree tops. The membrane
is from the hand to the foot.
Their tail also helps them glide by turning them in the right direction the tail on average is about them same size as the body.
Also they have ears that turn in every direction to hear anything coming near them.
On a female glider on their belly where you might guess a belly button to be they have a pouch it is just a slit in skin which has 4 nipples which joeys can attach to
on a male there will be a testicular sack. Males which they met maturity have 2 scent glands one on the forehead which is referred to as a "bald spot" and the other on the chest, tho the females also have a scent glad on the chest the males give off way more smell then females do.
Glider Housing
The type of cage you sugar glider lives in is very important. Fist off here are some cages you gliders should never live in a hamster cage, small bird cage, any cage that has wire spacing over 1/2 in, a galvanized wire cage. The smallest a cage for glider should be is 2ftx2ftx3ft. Those cages are just not suitable living area for a glider. The hamster cage and small bird cage are too small, any wire spacing over 1/2 in is too big and gliders will be able to escape from the cage by squeezing their bodies through the wires, and galvanized wire can giving gliders UTIs from over time when the gliders pee on the wire.
The best type of cage for a glider is either a large bird cage, homemade cage, or a reptarium. The cage needs to be either power coated or coated in pvc. These cages cant have bar spacing over 1/2 in.
CAGES
I personally have a cage. I have two cages one flipped on top of the other creating one big tall cage. Cages are great to have you can feed treats to your gliders through the bars and can watch them play and jump around. You can hang things almost anywhere in the cage. You also don't have to worry about chewers and can have multiple doors. But there are downsides to owning a cage. The can be heavy and can be hard to clean and sometimes to big to fit out of the door. Also the doors can sometimes be too small and things may not fit through the door. Always make sure you measure your doors and make sure the things you buy can fit through the door, like you wheel. Also you have to make sure bar spacing is 1/2 in the bigger cages normally have bigger spacing so you must check.
HOMEMADE CAGE
Homemade cages are great for people how want a certain size or shape and just cant find it or have a huge cage for really cheap. Homemade cages can be made out of pvc pipe and pvc mesh, or pvc coated wire, you can you wood but it needs to be sealed and it is not really the smartest ideal to use because if it is not sealed correctly it can soak up their urine and the wood will smell very bad. It all depends on how you make it it can have many doors or just one, can be wire or mesh with mesh they still can chew but its a little harder then repts. Weight depends on size and what it was made out of. If you use zip ties, which you mostlikly will, wear graden gloves it will help your hands hurt less. Whats great is everything is up to you on how you want your cage to be.
REPTARIUMS
Reptariums are a whole different type of cage. They were made for reptiles and use pvc type poles and a screen that zips off and on. These kind of cages are ideal for people who want a big cage for less. But the downside is gliders can chew through the screen and escape and if your glider is a chewer this is not the cage for you. There are other problems with repts stuff as not being able to see you gliders as well through the screen and you cannot give glider treats through the screen like you can on a cage. Also you cant hang things onto the rept like you could in a cage you have to be creative and think of ideas on how to hang stuff. Repts only have one door and its one side of the cage that unzips and opens all the way up.But repts can be easy to clean just cage the screen off throw it in the washer and rub down the pvc bars and your clean, it is easy to move because its lightweight and is still big.
Once you have your cage you next question might be what do I put in it?
Well first you need a pouch this is where the glider can sleep and is the place they will most likely feel safe. It is best to have more then one pouch int he cage in different areas unless you have a pregnant female then only one pouch. You want the
pouches up high and in the middle of the cage and maybe a type of pouch or sleeping area on the ground. Gliders like being high up in the cage making them feel safe but my gliders will wonder to the middle and even to the floor sometimes to sleep.
Next is the wheel you need a wheel it is mandatory this is a way for them to get their exorcize and they can do it whenever they want. If possible try to make it one wheel per glider so that every one can run at once and there will be no fighting over the wheel. Also the wheel needs to be over 12 in and I have
links posted on my site where to buy some good
wheels.
Gliders love
toys! The great thing is there is so many different type of
toys and you can make them! There are foraging
toys, something like having a plastic shot glass tied into some fleece strips and stick a few mealies into the glass and bam!You have a foraging toy now most foraging
toys are way more creative but thats just the basic type. Then you have just a toy they can swing around on or something on the floor they can move around of hide in. You could even stuff some fleece strips and feathers into a whiffle ball and let the gliders pull all of it of the ball. Just watch what you use or buy and make sure it is always glider safe.
When you are making homemade or buying
toys,
pouches, or other cage accessories you need to use fleece it is one of the only safe fabrics to use with gliders and other animals because fleece does not unravel unlike other fabrics. If things where to unravel it could cause the glider to get stuck to the toy or inside the pouch and could even kill the glider out of the glider trying to escape and hurting themselves. So just stick to fleece when buying or making things for inside your gliders cage.
Now onto
diet Well here on Youtube is where most people go wrong about
diets, first off any type of pellet is not a good
diet for them at least as the main part of the
diet. You need to choose a
diet like HPW (High Protein Wambroo), BML(Bourbons Modified Ledbeaters Mix), Blended Glider
diet, and last The Sugar Glider Exotic
diet. Choose one the these
diets pulse the right fruits and vegetables and you will have a very happy health glider. You can read more about these
diets on my site and
links on how to make them. I personally use HPW because i find it the easiest to follow. Now some of the things needed in these recipes might be hard to find but just order online and you will be fine. It is always worth it when you have a healthy glider.
bonding is something you must do with your glider to earn his or her trust and once you do its a amazing feeling to be accepted by him or her. There are many ways to bond but just remember when you first bring your glider home make sure you leave your glider alone to explore and get use to his or her new home. You can make it worst trying to bond with them in the first day or two. Gliders scent bond so you can put a few strips of fleece that you have worn in your shirt or on you in their pouch so when they sleep they smell you.
Licky Treats
Licky Treats are one of the first things you should try when starting the
bonding process. Basically what you do is put some honey or yogurt on the end of you finger and while you glider is awake open the cage door and put your hand in slowly and just let your hand sit there eventually the glider will come over to see whats going on and will start licking on your finger. You need to move slowly but also the glider might bite your finger once the honey or yogurt is almost gone, they don't hate you it is just what they do in the wild to trees when the sap in almost gone they bite and more comes out. Before it is almost gone remove your hand slowly and put some more on your finger and go again doing do this too much or give to much because this is a treat.
bonding Pouch
Next thing to try is the
bonding pouch. A
bonding pouch is basically a sleeping pouch like the one n the gliders cage but it has a zippered top sometimes a window on the front and a neck strap. You put the glider inside the pouch and wear it around you neck. The glider is sleeping in the pouch but smelling you and scene gliders scent bond it means while they sleep they are
bonding with you. This is a greta way to bond.
Tent Time
Tent time is my favorite way to bond. All you need to do is own a tent and some gliders! Set up a small tent place a fleece blanket on the floor of the tent so the plastic floor crackling doesn't freak out the gliders. Bring some
toys into the tent and your gliders close the tent and let the glider jump around inside. This is a very fun way to bond because you get to watch he gliders play and play on you. I love doing this and always makes me laugh and is always a great time.
Getting your glider
Please don't buy your glider on impulse it is not a good idea they are exotics. Never buy from a pet shop a mall stand or anything like that more then likely your getting a sick glider, maybe a glider who is to young to be away from his mom. Also try to find a breeder, not saying every breeder knows what they are doing but at least you can see the parents and there living area also the family tree of the glider if a breeder cant show you any of those don't buy I wouldn't buy if I could not see just one of those. And well pets stores almost never know what they are doing. To find a good breeder go over to glidercentral.net and use the breeder data base.
When getting your glider their are many different colors but the normal color would be a grey glider costing anywhere from 125-200 for a joey. Joeys need to be 8 weeks old before coming home no younger. Sometimes they still arrant ready by that time.
Please check out my site and glidercentral.net it is a great resource and you can learn new things every day about gliders.
