I was emailed with a question about weight today. And I never heard this solution before, so I thought I would ask. His female, she is 3yrs old (hes had her about 6months) Went to the vet for a check up because he thought she was small. I do not know the exact weights, but the vet said she was underweight. Shes on HPW and eats it all and most veggies doesn't seen to be eating fruits though. The vet said that the weight was concerning and told him to continue feeding her her regualar diet but to also hand feed her puppy formula 3 to 4 times a day. I have never heard of this method for getting gliders to gain weight. Has anyone else, is this safe or should he get another vets opinion? Please let me know so I can email back, I already told him to join on here but just in case, I said I would ask. Thank you

I use puppy formula (esbilac puppy milk replacer) with rejected joeys. I have also used it with ill gliders to help them maintain weight or gain weight. Also to help keep them hydrated. Most of my gliders just go absolute bonkers over a syringe full of puppy milk! Some will throw away a mealie, a yogie, or any other favorite food just to grab that syringe.

I do not know about the puppy formula, but that sounds odd to me. Some gliders seem to just be very petite. Munch and Monk are both very small -- Monk weighing 60 something grams, and Munch barely weighing 70 grams. Both are healthy, even though they're smaller than the average glider. My vet has yet to mention any concerns about their weight.

I looked at the email this poor girl is only weighing in at "around 45-50grams" is what was written. I honestly had no clue and I do not go giving advice for a situation in which I know nothing about. Thank you both for your quick answers!

That is SCARY tiny for a 3 yr old glider. I would suggest the puppy milk several times a day as well as feeding her more HPW during the day (about 1pm or so) to see if that will help her gain.

They don't sound underweight to me. 45-50 grams for a 3yr old glider does sound SCARY as Teresa put it.

Munch and Monk are both very small -- Monk weighing 60 something grams, and Munch barely weighing 70 grams. estimated OOP sometime in Sept '09. These babies are only about 5 months oop. That weight isn't bad at all. Gliders don't reach their full size until between 1 and 2 years oop. (closer to 1 year) Your babies aren't even half way there yet! Definately nothing to worry about for Munch and Monk.
