I am going to Houston in a couple of weeks to adopt two little guys. The trip home is 4 hours (I live in East Texas).

I will be driving with them in my van, in a carry cage. I figure they need some water, and a pouch to sleep the trip away in. My kids are going with me so we'll need to stop for bathroom breaks but there are Petsmarts along the way that we stop at because I usually have Echo (my pom) with me and I don't leave my babies (human or animal) in the car alone, ever!

Now for the reason for my ramble. I want them to have the safest trip possible so am I forgetting anything? Should I provide them food for the trip as well? It will be daytime (noon-4ish) so I'm hoping they'll sleep most of it.

You could take some fruit (grapes, apples etc) that they can snack on if you want. For 4 hours, you should do just fine. Make sure the pouch is a secure pouch (so they can't get loose on you).

Treats come in very handy on long trips. That's what I give mine for the drive. Then when I get to my hotel, I go get them some fresh fruit. But treats are good for the drive... smile

I use to travel from Houston to Dallas alot and would always take (at the time) my 2 gliders with me. If I ever traveled during the day they practically slept the whole time. I would always wrap a loose sheet over the cage so they wouldn't come out and freak out about the new environment they were in. Always have water and I would put a piece of fruit in the cage.

You might want to take a sheet to keep out as much light as possible...granted, they'll probably sleep most of the way (if not all of it) but I still do what I can to LOOSELY put some kind of blockage over their cage.

Wear a zippered bonding pouch, a pretty good sized one. Are they already cage-mates or do you have to do introductions. Might need two pouches?? A grape for liquids would be all I would take. Either that or a piece of melon. They usually sleep all day anyway.

Yes, they are already cage-mates so fighting shouldn't be an issue. smile I will make sure to bring a light blanket to keep any extra light out. I was already planning to set them out of the sun (just to prevent overheating) but I can cover them as well. Thanks y'all. smile
