I just adopted a 7mo. female and male. Their owner could no longer car for them. The male wasn't all that scared of me. He Came out and played with me and culddled up on my pjs. The next morning I woke up he was dead! I cried my eyes out. It was very warm in the room way. He didn't get into anything that would hurt him. Well I never got a health garantee with them so I messed myself up. I spoke to the woman and she was thinking the same thing I was. Maybe he was too stressed out? She claims he was attached to her boyfriend. I also don't think she was getting rid of them because he was sick. She is a vet tech and gets her pets taken care of for free. She says she has the papers from their checkup but, she didn't think to give them to me. She wants to replace him with another male. So will my female be ok until than? She is very active and is stating to get used to me. Come to think of it after he was at my home he wasn't as active and also wouldn't eat much. He just kept laying back down that night.

I am sorry for your loss. I will get the female checked by a vet asap just to make sure her health is in order. How far did they travel and under what circumstances? Was he dehydrated? It could be stress but he still had his cage mate. Did you have a necropsy done?

I sincerely doubt it was stress. Stress in gliders doesn't work like that. Please have a necropsy done if it is still possible. And get the surviving glider to a vet ASAP. She'll need fecals and a full work up. Do not get another glider until this one is checked out. And unless you have full lineage on both gliders, it isn't recommended that you breed them, so you would probably want a neutered male when the time comes.

My female is spayed. I don't know a thing about breeding and didn't want to risk it so they were both fixed. I already buried him =[ I didn't know what else to do. I was so devestated and still am. I went to Asbury Park to pick them up. It took me an hour and a half both ways. They had fresh water and fruit for the ride.It was also, warm in the car. They both seemed fine when I got them situated. When I went back in their "safe room" to check on them I took him out he came right to me. He wasn't really that active. He wouldn't glide so, I thought he was still uneasy about his new home. When I brought my female out the next day after he pased she was gliding all over the room, running around, and climbing on my head. The night before he passed I fed them he ate a little and laid down. My female was pigging out. My male woke up a few times when I was cleaning up and my son made noise playing but, went back to sleep. I also noticed that he wouldn't lay with her. He laid on a little patch of fleece(he still wasn't sure about the new pouch)while she laid in the wheel(her hiding place) I am def. going to take Sydney(female) to the vet. My next adoption is still in the works. This woman who sold me the gliders works with someone who has a breeding pair she is going to pay for the joey. I am going to make sure I get all of his papers on his health. He will be a lot younger than my female though. I will be his first owner, so I'm nurvous because, I'm not sure she will like him. Thank You for your support guys. Is there anything specific I should do to keep her happy and occupied? I also wanted to add, their cage was smaller than recommended and they were aslo on a horrible diet. (glide-r-chow) She also bought them from Perfect Pocket Pets! & used a heat rock.(I didn't offer them things to them when we got to my home) I have never personally owned my own suggies but, I seem to know more about them from research than she does from owning them. I switched them to hpw diet. When Romeo didn't eat much of it I put a few peices of the origional food to see if that was why he wasn't eating. It turns out it had nothing to do with it. Neither of them would go any where near it. I don't blame them. Any advice or suggestion from personal experience or thoughts on what to do to for a suggie that has lost their cagemate will be very much appreciated. I am trying to get her an new cagemate asap. But will it be more difficult because, she is in a new home, lost her buddy, and will be introduced to a new suggie that she doesn't know?

Oh! I forgot! There weren't any toys in their cage AT ALL. So Yesterday after I buried him(i should have thought to get a necropsy done.. obviously i'm still new since i didn't think of this) I made her another pouch out of fleece and I made a rope that stretches the width of the cage. I also made a dangling rope out of fleece with "frilly things?" until my order of toys for her gets here. I hate thinking about how they have been in that "not-quite-big-enough-cage" for so long with no toys at all. I'm also ordering a larger powder coated cage. Poor babies. why did this have to happen to my FIRST pair of suggies if it had to happen at all. . *sigh* thanks again -britt

My female is spayed. Are you sure? She also bought them from Perfect Pocket Pets! & used a heat rock That explains it all I am sorry that you are going through this. Please get your girl checked by a vet, and I would suggest that you do some research and choose the breeder where this woman is going to buy the joey.

females can NOT get fixed, only the males. the reason he was the way he was w/you the nite before he died,is that he was already sick before you got him. sick gliders usually are just as you stated. if he would have been 100% well,he would have been active, because of a new home, smell, people, etc.,not lethargic. i am so sorry this little guy didn't make it. josefine

I have to agree that it sounds like he was sick before you brought him home and stress made his condition worsen. I definitely would NOT take their word that your female is fixed, that is not something that any veterinarians would do as it is too risky which means if you bring home another male joey as a buddy for her you need to get him neutered. Honestly, I would be very careful and make sure the breeder she is getting the replacement joey from is reputable and make sure you get that baby with a health guarantee and take him to your vet as soon as you get him and quarantine, quarantine, quarantine!!! I am so sorry for your loss, just take the right precautions so you don't end up with the same heartache all over again.

Spaying a female glider is a very invasive, life-threatening surgery. It is only performed for extreme cases - such as perhaps cancer. It is not a routine procedure and there is a Zero Percent Chance your female is spayed. Perfect Pocket Pets is a nightmare. They routinely sell sick gliders. It is all the more important that you get your girl vet checked now - if they both came from there, they've both probably had parasites for a while. Personally, I would recommend that YOU find a breeder, check out a joey, and then tell this woman the cost so that she can pay for it. But - the selection of your "replacement" glider should be in your hands, not hers. Sorry this is so overwhelming! A great deal of us started out where you are now, and have had to learn the hard way about mill breeders.

I wouldn't allow her to replace the Joey with one from her friend I would request my money back and go about doing the work all yourself! There are to many What if's! You won't be able to intro her to a new one right away. She needs to be seen by a vet and cured of whatever she may have if she has anything and then rechecked again in 30 days to be sure it is gone. The new glider needs to be seen as soon as he/she gets to you checked for any possible illness or parasite and the quarantined from her for 30 days then rechecked by a vet and then if they are both all in the the clear slow intros will begin. You won't be able to just throw them together. I am sorry for the loss of your baby! I am located in Burlington area feel free to pm me any time for my number or just with questions!

thank you guys so much. I had no clue about spaying females being so risky. I feel dumb for just now finding this out! Thanks for the great advice. I'm going to call the vets office in the morning. I pray that she isn't ill too. That poor baby, he was such a little sweet heart. These mill breeders who sold the previous owners them suggies as for all mill breeders should be ashmed of them selves for breeding these great little critters resulting them to pain and suffering and also, death. I knew about Perfect Pocket Pets but didn't find out until I after I adopted them that, the woman got them from their.

please don't feel dumb,i said i was going to get my female fixed, too,& i got chuckled @, because their anatomy will basically not allow this. suz has good info you should know about gliders.as well as other sites w/in this forum. i would agree w/everyone else, you find a good breeder from here,& send the bill to the woman who sold them to you. i know it is easier said than done, but it can happen that you just mite get your way.most pple that deal w/ (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets are not duped into(they know the glider will probably be ill)the selling of the gliders to unsuspecting mommies, they just hope the gliders don't die quite so soon. all of us are left alone then,to pick up the pieces long after (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets is gone.it will always be heartbreaking for all of us when one of someones doesn't make it. josefine

I am sorry that your first experience with gliders has started out on a sad note. I agree with what everyone has said and that you shouldn't bring another into the house until you are sure that the little female is healthy. When you do get your next glider you will need to quarantine it for a minimum of 30 days and have fecals and vet checks done before you start introducing them to each other. While your learning here are some links that will be a great help to you. Newbys covering the basics

most pple that deal w/(PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets are not duped into(they know the glider will probably be ill)the selling of the gliders to unsuspecting mommies, they just hope the gliders don't die quite so soon. That is not true! Almost 100% of the people who go to (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets are lied to and are made to believe they are healthy, easy to care for, require little to no vet care and are cheap! A lot of people that get caught up by (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets have never even heard of these fascinating little creatures and buy them for those reasons on a whim with out doing the research!

I wanted to reiterate when you go to the vet, to get a fecal done. If he died from parasites, and it's very probable that he did...she most likely has them too and it's just a matter of time. If the fecal shows that she does in fact have them, then the vet will prescribe Flagyl (metronidazole)and you can give it to her at home. You'll need to bleach the cage and toys daily during treatment. But it is treatable. I say this to you because I dealt with Giardia (parasite) when I got my first two a year and a half ago. (We got our first glider from Perfect Pocket Pets) Anyway, my girl was very bad and if we had not taken her to the vet, she would have most likely died as she was very bad with them. Good luck to you! You're getting great advice here.

my first 2 also died of this. we got our last year in 4-08. we got our male fixed in june, & he was gone by 7/25. it was absolutely horrible on me(& will always be).i had him in my care,& i let him die,not knowing what was going on. i found this site after he had died, & after we got our girl a little boy. we got him in august.shortly after, our female was sick, we took her to the vet,she was full of giardia. so, both babies had to be put on the meds.& i got real good @ giving sub-q's.the last nite of the round of meds,& my girl died in my hand.I'm so glad i called Linda,as she told me i needed to let my boy see her,so he can get an understanding as to what happened.it was heart wrenching,to see him go to her,& nudge on her,i was crying & throwing up @ the same time. we had a tiny little stuffed animal that we put in his pouch for him,to try & make it not be so hard for him. he was on the med also, only he had always tested neg. for giardia!!we were @ the vet alot.when my female died,we lost our vet,he no longer wanted to see gliders.i had him on the phone w/Tristan quite abit, also. cosmos,my male, lost alot of weight. the med will do that to them. they will not want to eat @ all. you just have to syringe feed them,& get the water down them,to keep them going.also,if they do seem to be loosing too much weight, you will need to feed them foods that are fattening for them.there are recipe's somewhere in here that have meals listed that are not good for them to eat the rest of their life, but they need the foods now,in order to get their weight back well,i haven't written anything this long,in a long time!!! so, for the sake of the new members,i will shut up again. i just felt it was needed to be discussed once again. i will forever love all who were w/me,& never gave up on me,to help me in keeping cosmos alive,so he wouldn't have died, also(even tho he was always tested negative to giardia)!!!!!!! talk @ ya L8R

I called the vet office and I have an app. for Monday. She's still very active and everything seems well so far with her. I'm nurvous about the vet visit though. She's starting to warm up to me. She looks for a treat everytime I walk in the room now! She lets me take her out even though she still gets a little scared.

Don't be nervous, it will benefit her, possibly save her even if she's acting normal. You just never know, gliders can be fine one minute and go downhill fast. Best thing to do since her cagemate mysteriously died. Great on the bonding!

I wanted to update everyone and let you guys know that Sydney(My female) is healthy. My vet office wants me to take her back in about a month or so to rensure that everything is still alright. I've got her in her pouch around my neck as I type. She's starting to sleep in her pouch! She only used to sleep in her wheel and she was scared to come to me but, now she's running out of the cage onto my arm and exploring! She moves so fast! I think she was starting to get cabin feaver because, she didn't want to be out of her cage. She would only let me hold her and play with her for a short time than climb ontop of her cage to let me know that she wanted back in. She's coming along great. I love her so much already. I couldn't imaging losing her too. Thank you guys for all of your support!

I love reading posts on G.C. I learn so much information. Thank you everyone for helping us new suggie owners! Brittany, I am so sorry you had to lose your little Romeo, I know it had to have been heart wrenching. Your little girl sounds awesome! I'm still trying to bond with my little girl Vanna. She is so timid and scared of everything. They guy I got her from bought her from a breeder, but he had her in a very small cage, no wheel, no toys, no pouch, just a hut. And only pellets. She has a big cage now, a wheel and toys and she still doesn't use any of them. She loves the eucalyptus leaves though. I found a guy on here that sells them fresh, dried and chew sticks. I'll find you the link and pm you if you are interested. It's so cute to watch her with it. And...I have found another glider that I have put a deposit on from a breeder on here. I can't wait because she is going to learn how to be a glider again and play and have fun and love! I'm so very excited. Keep us posted on your second glider. If I were you, I would tell her no thanks, send her the bill and go with a reputable breeder from here. It's much safer.
