Here is a nice little tale for you. I have a friend that helps maintain an apartment building. Well, 14 days after a tenant moved out, he went in to check it over. Inside, they found two beta fish and several random assortments of cacti. Not knowing what to do, he left the fish and all of the cactus with another friend of ours and she is "adopting" the cacti to new homes.
She insisted I take one. Here is the thing though, this cactus is not doing well. I know zilch about plants and every time I try to keep a plant, it dies within weeks. How I manage my menagerie from day to day amazes me after I see myself with a plant.
I *think* it's suffering from root rot, but I'm not sure as I know nothing about these things. The lower portion of the poor thing is completely brown. It may be dead for a all I know. I was told to put it in a bigger pot soon and to bury it halfway up the brown and it will re-root itself.
I don't even know what type of cactus it is. I tried to id it online, but was so overwhelmed that I gave up after a few hours of searching. I plan on transplanting it into a new pot tomorrow. Any advice or tips would be great.
Pics attached. One picture is a closeup of one of the spiny nodes and one shows the brown.

It looks like a Torch Cactus. They like bright light and 10-10-10 fertilizer on a monthly basis. (according to my houseplants book)

Okay, so I was listening to some Willy Nelson last night while researching the cactus and decided his name will be Willy. I'm surprised at how strong my drive is to help this cactus.
I have a few options that I've read online (still no luck with identifying Willy's species):
1. Remove him from his current pot and inspect the roots to see if there are any living roots. Remove the rot and replant with rooting solution.
2. I read over and over again to cut the cactus in half above the rot, let him dry for a few weeks and get a scab over the cut, and then replant him with rooting solution.
3. Remove the three "nodes" and plant them in separate pots and hope for rooting.
I could also do a combination of the three. I might check out his roots and if there is nothing salvageable, I will cut him and try to re-root him. Either way, I'm probably going to separate out the three nodes and plant them individually once they heal up.
